An authentic example of a Bavarian Hefeweizen. “Hefe” means cloudy or yeasty and “weizen” means wheat. This beer is made with mostly wheat and uses a true Hefeweizen yeast that gives it a fruity, banana aroma with just a hint of cloves. The tart finish makes this the perfect summer beer.

Picked up a growler at the brewery.

A: Cloudy yellowish orange with minimal head and no lacing.

S: Strong smell of bananas and wheat. Some clove. Fruity and sweet.

T: Tastes like husky wheat with a compliment of sweet banana. Flavorful and refreshing.

M: Not as heavy as it looks. Light and bubbly. I would like to see the body a little more mellow.

D: Very very drinkable. Particularly on a hot summer day a sixer of this can go quickly. One of my favorite offerings from the hometown brewery.

Had on tap at Jim'Nick's BBQ in Murfreesboro,TN.Came in a standard pint glass a dull hazed medium golden with a thinner white head atop, knowing it wasn't in the proper glassware kept the score from going lower on the appearance.clove and banana aromas stood out most and they were pretty assertive, light toasted wheat underneath.alighter feel in the mouth but it made the beer go down even easier than many of the style.Banana and yeasy phenol flavors with a refreshing little lemony twang in the finish wich gave it a little complexity. Not a bad beer, not a style i go to very often but Iam sure it beats the TN heat in the summer.

I went on a Hefeweizen tirade for many weeks. This one is a little disappointing as it doesn't taste of a Hefeweizen one bit. It has a mid body Hefeweizen feel but only after an overly hoppy attack that you don't expect. If you're in the Hef game for a mellow, wheat feel-this beer will take you off guard.

12oz brown bottle with a "bottled on" date.

Vigorous pouring produces a tall order of white head, a stiff swirl of the bottle to get some yeast in as well makes the brew hazy straw in appearance. Soft banana bread and a twang of clove in the nose, yeasty. A bit smooth, a bit slick and a bit crisp in the lighter body. Bready palate, banana taffy, faint clove, nutty yeast and some other vague fruity esters in the back. Semi-dry finish.

Pretty spot on for the style, good drinking ... I'd perfer more smoothness here but now I am splitting hairs.

Poured the bottle into a pint glass. Beer is a hazy, light yellow with an egg-white head. There was great carbonation and head retention.

The smell was 'bright'. Also lemon, floral and sweet.

I was extremely impressed by the taste of this beer. It is medium-bodied and there is a creamy mouthfeel to it. I would call the overall taste sweet and lemony, but not too strong. I found the taste was more subtle than some hefeweizens which was quite pleasant with the creamy texture of the beer.

Thanks to travita for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a very murky light yellow color with a white head. The aroma is basic hefeweizen with bananas and cloves. The flavor is similar but the bananas and wheat are much stronger than the cloves. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

As I was back in Nashville I picked up a bottle of this one, as I wanted to try the Hef brewed by Yazoo, the very popular brewery from here. I was generally impressed.

I would say I poured this 12oz bottle into a pint glass, but that would be a lie. Because as I opened it, I lost about 2 ounces due to a slippery table. Fail. Oh well, on with the review.

Cloudy appearance, more of a copper color than lemon color but still not far from what is to be expected. Taste was more than I expected. A lot smoother than I have come to find with a lot of hefs. The wheat and spices come out a lot in the glass. Very drinkable and for those in Tennessee or the South as a whole, this should be an easy to find winner of a hef.

A big white head quickly falls into a thin lacing above a clear pale golden colored beer.

Banana, cloves, and other little spices aroma with a little bit of yeast coming through on this light bodied beer.

Light banana, light cloves and maybe some other similar spices with some added light bread like malts taste.

The aftertaste on this beer is a light dryish with just a bit of the spicy notes hanging around, and it seems to turn to a slight banana as time goes by.

Seems to be an alright lighter hefeweizen, but still a light to much banana for me.

Yazoo- Hefeweizen

Thanks to Unclejedi(Jed) for this 1!

A- Bright hazy yellow with a big billowy white head. Had to stop pouring and wait for it to subside.
S- Big strong clove aroma with a touch of sweet lemon.
T- Big sweet lemon honey with an equally bigger does of clove. Slight banana bubblegum flavors picked up in the end.
M- Very sweet throughout with a good tangy body and a crisp dry finish.

Overall- Quite good! Very clove dominated but tasty as hell! My 1st from TN and from Yazoo highly recommended(Thanks Jed!)

This beer was poured into a weizen glass at 42° from a 12 ounce bottle with a bottled on date notched on the label. Over three fingers of carbonated head resulted from the pour and swirl and pour. There was good head retention but no lacing as the head subsided. The beer was cloudy and pale golden.

Cloves and spices were predominant in the aroma. The beer also displayed fruitiness.

Spices, cloves, and bananas came across quickly. Cloves continued with the bananas fading later on.

This one was short and sweet and to the point. Good flavors were enjoyed throughout the mouth.

This was a simply made hefe with refreshing qualities. It would be a good session beer and thoroughly enjoyable during the warm summer months.

Cloudy golden, with rather tame carbonation and head. Practically no lace at all.

Scent of bananas, clove, and some orange. Very good!

Taste is quite pleasant. I get a sweet rush up front, followed by a strong wheat and spice tanginess towards the finish. Very representative of the style.

A very well-done hefeweizen, and well worth a repeat purchase.

The beer pours like the typical hefeeweizen. Cloudy, hazy and grainy with a thin white head and spotty lace. The smell is faint and grainy with a back draft of banana, cloves and pepper. The taste is a bit thin and watery up front, but perfectly balanced between the banana and cloves. hints of black pepper and a tart hop bite in the background. A bit thin and watery, but a creamy swallow. Simple, refreshing, and easy to drink.

Bought direct from the brewery in Nashville TN.

A- Bright golden, creamy yellow color. Light head and lacing.

S- Bready, yeasty, fruity, moldy basement, citrus, and a corriander like spice.

T- Citrus fruits, pineapples, bananas and white cracked pepper.

M- Just a little watery for the style. Should have more of a creamy texture to match the appearance.

D- Definitely a good drinking beer on a college football Saturday. Low ABV, very nonoffensive, and goes down quite nicely.

Drinking Date: 12/14/10
Bottled-On Date: Late October 2010

Appearance: Very cloudy and light yellow with an orange tint. Looks like freshly squeezed orange juice. The head is white and bubbly. It dissipates very quickly and leaves no lacing. There was very little foam left by the time I took my first sip.

Smell: Full-on fruity and banana aroma. A pleasure to whiff. A hint of alcohol was also present.

Taste: The taste followed the smell... very banana-like. Not a complex taste, but what was there was pretty good. The first sip was the best, becaues the fruity sweetness was right up front (then my mouth got used to it). Carbonation was at a good level.

Mouthfeel: Went down smoothly; too smoothly for my taste. Not enough body to the beer. It drank like a light American lager. ALthough, this does contribute to its drinkability.

Drinkability: Due to the beers light body and easiness on the palate, I could see drinking a few few of these easily.

Notes: Overall a decent beer. I would drink it again if I saw it on tap. Worth a try and/or for a change of pace.

Poured from 12oz bottle. Thanks to Supernova777 for the pour. Josh you shouldn't have!

A- Pours a hazy yellowish orange color. One finger white head shows low retention and leaves very light streaks of lacing on the sides of the glass.

S- Good typical hefe aromas come to the nose. Clove, banana, and a light yeasty scent hit first. There is a light wheat undertone to this nose. Some light citrus notes along with a light alcohol whiff in the ending bring out the aroma.

T- The inital flavor was citrus forward which tended to die down the more I drank of this. Wheat notes were big and maybe some of the boldest parts of the flavor. Banana and clove came through from the middle on toward the ending. The alcohol made itself apparent toward the ending of the beer but was light about it. Average tasting with a little extra something about it.

M- Light mouthfeel. Carbonation was good for the style. Light citrus and banana flavors along with wheat left on the palate. Aftertaste was more wheaty along with a touch of light alcohol and banana clove combo. Alcohol had a light drying on the palate. Flavor was a little off but I couldn't put my finger on it how...I don't know if it was just a little too watery for my liking with this style.

D- I thought this beer was a good offering. Not the most mind blowing Hefeweizen I have had but a good one. This is my first beer from Yazoo and I like what I think they could do. The ABV was light and hidden well. The flavor was a little lacking at times but the drinkability kind of made up for it.

Original 2007 review (on-tap):
Pours to a nice head and cloudy yellow color. Aroma is traditional hefe--banana and clove. Flavor is typical hefe with spicy clovey notes and banana throughout. Nice wheat bite. Reminiscent of many other well-made American hefeweizens. An easy drinking, well-made hefeweizen.

Follow-up 2014: Just picked up a sixer at a Tupelo Kroger. Date bottled 01/22/14. Tasted fresh and the review holds true for the bottled product. The way a Hefe should taste. Wish I bought a whole case now... my hefe-loving wife will love this. Pick up some today.

Yazoo please head west. Arkansas and Oklahoma will support you.

Working a few blocks away from the brewery, I should be loyal, however; I have to be honest.
It's not a bad beer is just not as good as all the 'beer snobs' say it is.
The color is o.k., smells o.k., the taste is just a little overpowering. Maybe I'm just too used to the Hefe Weissen beers from Germany.
I probably won't buy it again, but I will try other beers from Yazoo.

Poured into my hefe glass. Appearance is light, clear golden with a 3-finger, frothy white head. Minimal lacing.

The smell is strong of cloves, yeast, banana & lemon. Taste is mainly cloves, lemon, wheat & herbal hops. Mouthfeel is light & crisp; more carbonated than a lot of other hefes I've had, but that's not a bad thing.

This is a drinkable hefeweizen, flavorful & not medicinally bitter like a lot of American hefes out there.

Hazy yellow/orange in color, pale, with a white finger plus of head. No lacing.

Smell is nice, with some citrus, graininess, slight malt sweetness and some banana.

Much of the same. Bit more on the banana though.

The feel is a little silky, smooth, light in body. Decent carbonation.

Pretty good drinkability. Multiples would be good.

A gift from Grant, a top-notch BA. Sampled 1/21/11. A notch on the label indicates bottling in the first week in December.

A: A huge 5 finger head when poured down the center of a hefeweizen glass. Pristinely white, mousse-like, compact foam. The head never completely fades. The body is cloudy and light yellow in color.

S: Bread, wheat and biscuits. Light hops of citrusy lemon. Dried banana and bubblegum. Barely noticeable hint of vanilla. Mild clove suggestions, but the aroma is more fruity esters than it is spicy phenols.

T: The finish is dominated by banana, the only remaining flavor after the effervescence clears the tongue.

M: Spritzy with prickly carbonation. Light to medium body.

D: The flavor and mouthfeel really come together once the beer gains a few degrees and the dies down. Solid brew.

From a 12 oz. bottle set to me from a friend in TN. Aroma is yeasty and a little lemony. Pale straw, with some yeast haze. Head is like soda and dissipated quickly. Flavor is bready with some lemon hop flavor, with a little classic hefeweizen clove and banana. High carbonation, and a little thin, but dry and refreshing. A decent example of a German hefe.

Sampled on tap at the Brewgrass festival in Asheville, North Carolina. Consumed on 09/20/2008 and reviewed from notes taken at the time.

The pour was very nice, classic hefe style here, with a rich and hazy and very light pale yellow color. A large, two inch high head of white came up over the top and settled down gently into a light and fluffy layer that all it took was a few seconds to wisp away. Lots of carbonation could be seen coming up from the bottom of the glass throughout the session.

The aroma was light and very pleasing. A light banana and clove like smell comes at me with the first whiff. Sweet, almost bubblegum like presence, and we all know that all too familiar strain of yeast that makes it just really stick out in a crown. Flavor came through right away, light and very bright with a light grain base that was quickly overshadowed by a light fruit like flavor that really just shined right through. Quick and clean with the lasting flavor of banana stuck on my tongue, this was simply done very well. Light body with a great amount of carbonation in it, I was shocked by how smooth and easy this one went down.

Overall I really thought this was a very solid ale. Certainly my favorite of theirs that I got to try. I would have no issues at all with getting this one again any day. It was really just fantastic and a wonderful little beer.
