An authentic example of a Bavarian Hefeweizen. “Hefe” means cloudy or yeasty and “weizen” means wheat. This beer is made with mostly wheat and uses a true Hefeweizen yeast that gives it a fruity, banana aroma with just a hint of cloves. The tart finish makes this the perfect summer beer.

Been wanting to try this one for a while and finally found some in a little store..

Pours a very cloudy hazy pale yellow with a big creamy head...

Great aroma of banana, cloves, lemon, bubble gum, and that yeasty wheaty hefe smell... So far, so good.

Very light crisp taste of citrus, banana, and a hint of the cloves. Damn, this is a great little brew!! I had some Live Oak a couple weeks ago and I have to tell you, this is almost as good as that was!! This is exceptionally fresh having been bottled a couple weeks ago and you can tell.

Great little hefe!! Very drinkable! I will be heading back to grab some more of this one to keep around this summer.

This is much better on tap fresh from the brewery than out of the bottle. It looks like the typical hefeeweizen. Cloudy, hazy and grainy with a thin white head and spotty lace. The smell is faint and grainy with a back draft of banana, cloves and pepper. The taste is a bit thin and watery up front, but perfectly balanced between the banana and cloves. hints of black pepper and a tart hop bite in the background. A bit thin and watery, but a creamy swallow. Simple, refreshing, and easy to drink.

A gift from Grant, a top-notch BA. Sampled 1/21/11. A notch on the label indicates bottling in the first week in December.

A: A huge 5 finger head when poured down the center of a hefeweizen glass. Pristinely white, mousse-like, compact foam. The head never completely fades. The body is cloudy and light yellow in color.

S: Bread, wheat and biscuits. Light hops of citrusy lemon. Dried banana and bubblegum. Barely noticeable hint of vanilla. Mild clove suggestions, but the aroma is more fruity esters than it is spicy phenols.

T: The finish is dominated by banana, the only remaining flavor after the effervescence clears the tongue.

M: Spritzy with prickly carbonation. Light to medium body.

D: The flavor and mouthfeel really come together once the beer gains a few degrees and the dies down. Solid brew.

Bottle into pint glass.

Cloudy pale straw, nice effervescence, very thin white head that's not that impressive. Nice color, though - wonderful balance of clarity and haze to give the color really nice depth and pop.

Nose is really nice and wheaty, with a nice dose of vanilla and clove as well. Not getting too much banana, and just a bit of a sourdough yeast note on the end.

Taste is dry and very crisp. Wheaty, almost husky graininess, big clove, and a hufty whack of yeasty sourness towards the finish. Finish is longish, yeasty, a bit earthy.

Mouthfeel is light and a bit creamy, nicely put together.

Drinkability is pretty solid - very respectable American hefe from a brewery I'm becoming increasingly happy is local to me. Could be a bit more balanced in the yeast flavors but it feels authentic, unlike many, many of the American hefes I've had.

Original 2007 review (on-tap):
Pours to a nice head and cloudy yellow color. Aroma is traditional hefe--banana and clove. Flavor is typical hefe with spicy clovey notes and banana throughout. Nice wheat bite. Reminiscent of many other well-made American hefeweizens. An easy drinking, well-made hefeweizen.

Follow-up 2014: Just picked up a sixer at a Tupelo Kroger. Date bottled 01/22/14. Tasted fresh and the review holds true for the bottled product. The way a Hefe should taste. Wish I bought a whole case now... my hefe-loving wife will love this. Pick up some today.

Yazoo please head west. Arkansas and Oklahoma will support you.

pils glass requested, into german mug as it'll have to do.

Nice bright golden color, big foamy head that is 3-fingers plus. Very creamy, slightly off white. Takes a while to settle down.

One whiff and I get a lot of honey/floral sweetness and some strong yeast notes.

Taste confirms. Mild banana and the yeast backs off a bit. Very mellow but enjoyable. Mildly grassy, some twinge of tart apple too. Pleasing finish.

A bit light for the style but pretty refreshing. I enjoyed this one.

Courtesy of ckeegan04. Am drinking this earlier than planned 'cause I'm bottling today and realized I'm out of bottles, so WTF?!

Pours a light grapefruit color...slightly turbid. Surprisingly enough there's not a whole lot of head to this deal. Interesting - at first looks more like an American wheat beer. Carbonation is prevalent and climbs slowly up the ladder.

There's a hint of the classic Hefe banana and clove esters with a hint of citric acidity...not quite grapefruit but maybe a pinch of lemon zest. Definitely brings around a good yeast scent and electricity. A little more hoppy than the average bear, maybe?

Damn, this is refreshing if nothing else...but of course there's something else. Way tart on the first gulp when cold but then the clove hits you like a Kung Fu throwing star. A little ginger, too...maybe? It's sharp all over, with a big dollop of yeast and wheat electricity. Hop bite may be subtle but not as subtle as expected for the style. Thoroughly quenching.

Palate feel may have a little too much citrus for my taste but it's still enjoyable. Hops and cloves mix it up well, but the cloves win this battle to keep it light and spritely. Finish is crisp and clean...no caffeine.

This one may not be yo' mammy's Hefeweizen but it's a solid hybrid of a classic Hefe and an American wheat, which is fine by me. And it's a little hoppier to me. Maybe a little bit of extra sourness is the only thing that is a little out of whack but this is a very palatable lawnmower concoction. Nicely done.

Thanks to ckeegan04 for this one. My bottle was poured into a Wiezen glass it looked real nice three fingers worth of white head that goes to a thick lace. The body was a hazy yellow in color interrupted by a bubble or two coming from the bottom of the glass

Aromas of citrus' bubblegum and wheat with a slight sourness as well filled my nose

Flavors of citrus and spices and there is that sourness again it kind of works with this brew .This brew is light and crisp in the mouth.

Good drinkability as well although I haven't had too many I wouldn't drink again. You could kickback a few of these real easy like. A good try at a Hefe not my favorite but not the worst either

Tasted On: 03-25-2012
Freshness: Bottled on 03-08-2012
Packaging: 12 oz. brown bottle
Glassware: Weizen Glass
Purchased: 6-pack from Kroger

Color is a semi-hazy straw yellow, topped by a white head of tight bubbles between 2 and 3 fingers. Both head retention and lacing are fair.

Aromas are first and foremost of banana, followed by some zesty notes like lemon. Other smells are clove spices and of bubblegum fruitiness and sweetness.

Taste is of banana fruitiness and delicately sweet wheat malt. Crisp, with a light amount of tart and no bitterness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with carbonation on the high end. Aftertaste is fruity and slightly citrus-like and spicy.

Overall I'd rate this a refreshing and delightful wheat beer for the spring and summer.

a - poured a two-fingers thick bubbly and white head into a weizen glass that disappeared way too quickly. the body was a slightly hazy, straw gold color.
s - yeasty with some straw hop aromas.
t - nice balance between lemons and bananas with a hint of yeastiness.
m - very crisp and thin, bubbly.
o - good hefe but i was very disappointed in the carbonation.

Had this on tap at Broadway Brewhouse

Pale honey gold with a finger of foamy bright white head. This beer is all kinds of hazy. Looks very enticing

The scent given off is dominated by bananas. Subtle clove background with some really nice bubblegum notes

The taste follows the nose. Great banana taste but lacking depth. Still, very refreshing

Medium bodied with ample amounts of carbonation.

I thought this was a very refreshing Hef and not a bad first beer for me to try in Nashville. I definitely recommend trying this out if you have a chance

Served on tap in a pint glass. Hazy yellow body with a small head that faded quickly. Little lacing.

Decent aroma but light here as well. A little citrus and bready wheat. A hint of banana and spices in the background.

Solid hefeweisen flavor. Spicy yeast followed by banana and clove. Some light bubble gum in the background. More impressed with the flavor than I thought I would be.

Overall a nice representation of the style. Good for Yazoo.

Nose of banana and lemon for the most part. Searched around for the typical cloves in this style, but couldn't find them.

There's some banana on the front, though nowhere near cloying or too "forward". There's also the cloves there as well, which are noticeable in the body of the beer. The finish sees a bit of lemon, plus some sweet wheat that lingers after the swallow.

This is pretty much a hefeweizen by the textbook. It isn't among the absolute best that I've had, as I like bolder flavors in these beers, but it's done pretty well and seeing as how this is brewed in the city in which I live, I should drink it more.

Poured into a glass from a 12oz bottle.

A - Poured a clear straw with a light haze towards the end. 1/2 inch white head with no lacing. Not the big head retention and lacing that I'm used to with a hefeweizen.

S - Strong aroma of bananas and lemons. Not much else is detectible aside from the fruity aroma, but thats what I expect from this style. The aroma reminds me a little of Hoegarden.

T - The taste is largely dominated by the flavor of the banana and lemon flavor, with a nice amount of malted wheat thickening up the taste. More complex than I make it sound to be.

M - Light bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Smooth clean finish.

D - This beer has a very nice full flavor, with enough complexity to keep it above your usual hefeweizen IMO. This is definitely one of the more flavorful hefeweizens that I've tried without having to go to an extreme version. A highly recommended sessionable hefeweizen!!!

Light wheat and grassy aroma, signature of the Hefeweizen Style.

The initial head dissipated quickly, and the mouthfeel is a little thin.

A nice little Hef.

A- Nice cloudy bright yellow color. The head is thick and foamy, very fluffy and light. Sort of cloud like. The head leaves no lacing, this must be due to the acid in this beer.

S- The smell is great, very traditional German Hefe smell. The banana and clove come though very well. I also pick up a smell of honey, spice, and the wheat.

T- Very light and refreshing. I'm sensing a bit of an acidic taste that seems to coat the tongue. I, personally, have never had a hefe that had this acidic taste, its very interesting to me. I like this aspect and find it fun and enjoyable. The banana is very present in the after taste and it seems to linger long after the sip has been taken.

M- Feels very good in the mouth, very light and crisp.

D- Very easy to drink, too bad this was only a 12oz beer. I'm sad to watch it go.

Bottled 2nd week of January

Poured into a hefeweizen glass. Slightly cloudy, straw yellow in color with a thin white head, which fades into a thin ring around the edges of the glass.

Lots of sweet malts, banana, orange, coriander and light cloves on the nose. Yeasty, citrusy and spicy. Quite good.

Malty, light citrus (orange mostly) and banana in the flavor. Wheat and yeast come through nicely. Spices still present, but more aromatic than flavorful. Almost lemony on the finish.

Mouthfeel is fairly crisp, smooth and refreshing. Ample carbonation. Body could have a little more thickness to it, but still decent.

Drinkability is pretty good. I like the crisp tartness associated with the flavor. Not my go to hefe, but still a good showing. Easy to put down one or two of these. Would have this beer again if it were available in the area. Aroma was the best, but the flavor isn't too bad either. Worth trying if you see it.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass... hazy golden yellow color with a thing fizzy white head. The head barely lasted a minute before dissipating.

The aroma is nice, malty, a little citrus flavor... very impressed after the less than impressive appearance.

The citrus flavor dominates the taste up front... a little sour lemon on the tongue at the end of each sip. It's not bad, but not as balanced as it could be.

The mouthfeel is average... nothing special but this is definitely a drinkable beer. Light and refreshing and could make for a decent summer session beer.

Thanks Ckeegan for this one in the latest BIF. Thanks really to andy van slyke.
12oz bottle poured into pint glass.

A: This is one pretty beer- what one should look like. Cloudy yellow-cheddar orange with tons of haze and a good head that thinned itself out.

S: Beautiful nose on this in my opinion. Bananas, tangy lemon, spices. The yeast aromas could be seen as overbearing if you look for a fault.

T: Sweet bananas and yeast. The spiciness doesn't have the balance that it needs but still a tasty beer. Bubblegum in each sip with a sour tart flavor in the finish.

M: Light yet chewy. Cleansing in the mouth and the spiciness clears up all flavors of what else you might have eaten or drank.

D: First effort from Yazoo, and this was nice. For a drinkable style, this isn't perfect but it packs a lot of flavor into a relatively small beer. Thumbs up although maybe something missing that would round it out.

A: gold on color not much head decent clarity

S: banana for miles and for some reason makes me think of banana nut bread so maybe some yeasty dough

T: fairly sweet beer clove and lots of banana

M: clean and light on the tongue refreshing somewhat

O: it's an ok hefe seems fairly one dimensional the smell is probably the best part

Bottle into a pint glass.

A - Poured cloudy, golden color with lots of head that slowly dissipated leaving lots of lacing around the glass.

S - Straight forward smell of wheat and yeast. Hints of grass and floral are present as well.

T - Wheat and grass upfront followed by yeast and slight presence of hops.

M - Light bodied with high carbonation.

D - Very drinkable and tasty, very light as well. Would definitely want to drink more in the future.

Bought direct from the brewery in Nashville TN.

A- Bright golden, creamy yellow color. Light head and lacing.

S- Bready, yeasty, fruity, moldy basement, citrus, and a corriander like spice.

T- Citrus fruits, pineapples, bananas and white cracked pepper.

M- Just a little watery for the style. Should have more of a creamy texture to match the appearance.

D- Definitely a good drinking beer on a college football Saturday. Low ABV, very nonoffensive, and goes down quite nicely.

Poured into my hefe glass. Appearance is light, clear golden with a 3-finger, frothy white head. Minimal lacing.

The smell is strong of cloves, yeast, banana & lemon. Taste is mainly cloves, lemon, wheat & herbal hops. Mouthfeel is light & crisp; more carbonated than a lot of other hefes I've had, but that's not a bad thing.

This is a drinkable hefeweizen, flavorful & not medicinally bitter like a lot of American hefes out there.

A - Pours a pale yellow that is crystal clear. One and a half white fluffy head with lots and lots of bubbles. Oddly...not much retention and zero lacing

S - Whew...better like bananas! Very heavy on the bananas up front. Smells sweet. Definate clove on the back as well.

T - Very much like the aroma. Very heavy on the banana flavor followed by clove. Very good flavor overall....if you like banana

M - Extremely light drinking beer. Bubbles tend to cling to your tongue and the roof of your mouth.

O - A very good hef. East drinking with a ton of flavor. No complaints. I dont want that much banana in my beer al lthe time but at times it would be a very nice change
