An authentic example of a Bavarian Hefeweizen. “Hefe” means cloudy or yeasty and “weizen” means wheat. This beer is made with mostly wheat and uses a true Hefeweizen yeast that gives it a fruity, banana aroma with just a hint of cloves. The tart finish makes this the perfect summer beer.

On tap at the Yazoo brewery, served in a tall Hefeweizen glass. It arrived looking cloudy and golden wheat in color. A rocky white head filled the top of the glass. Great looking beer for the style.

The aroma shows lots of breadywheat and banana flavors to it. The yeasty, clove like spices are a little more reserved in it, which I like. Very nice for the style, and especially nice on this hot day.

In the taste I again get lots of banana and sweet, bready, wheat malts. A little clove spice comes out in the finish. Very drinkable and refreshing beer overall.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied for the style with moderate carbonation. Overall I thought it was a very solid beer of the style. I had this a few times over the weekend in Nashville and having it on tap, straight from the brewery, in the appropriate glass was a significantly better experience than the other times I had it around town. Maybe it was just the atmosphere or how hot I was, but that was my experience at least. (991 characters)

Poured from a bottle into a New Belgium globe glass.

Pours butterscotch gold with an off white head

Smells like banana bread and buttery yeast

Tastes is smokey, banana, spicy then more banana

Feels sharp at first, then really creamy

I really like this one, I could drink it all night. (290 characters)

Received a 12 FL. OZ. Bottle from a friend from Nashville, TN. Poured from the Blue/Yellow labeled bottle w/ a Blonde Women with wild hair holding a beer into a 12oz Snifter Glass. Has a BOTTLED ON DATE of FEB 03 12 on the side of the label.

Aroma- Has a great amount of German malt and also citrus. TONS of citrus at that. Light spices.

Appearance- Pours a .5 finger head that has average retention. Has a deep golden/light orange colored body with tons of cloud. Leaves good lacing behind.

Flavor- Sweet, light citrus, and good spice. Easy characters of malt and leaves with a sweet finish. No hops present.

Mouthfeel- Light-Medium Bodied, High Carbonation, Effervescent, and leaves only malts on the palate.

Overall Impression-Very nice for a Hefe that won a 2004 GABF award. I hope to pick up more of this when in Nashville this summer to enjoy during the heated summer months. (890 characters)

Tasted On: 03-25-2012
Freshness: Bottled on 03-08-2012
Packaging: 12 oz. brown bottle
Glassware: Weizen Glass
Purchased: 6-pack from Kroger

Color is a semi-hazy straw yellow, topped by a white head of tight bubbles between 2 and 3 fingers. Both head retention and lacing are fair.

Aromas are first and foremost of banana, followed by some zesty notes like lemon. Other smells are clove spices and of bubblegum fruitiness and sweetness.

Taste is of banana fruitiness and delicately sweet wheat malt. Crisp, with a light amount of tart and no bitterness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with carbonation on the high end. Aftertaste is fruity and slightly citrus-like and spicy.

Overall I'd rate this a refreshing and delightful wheat beer for the spring and summer. (765 characters)

Still technically winter but a nice hot day makes me dream of summer, so why not a nice hefe. Thanks to pitasoup (reddit) for this one. And screw this lame-o screw cap.

Pours a light fizzy head that gets to almost 1 finger on my upside down pour bit the head fades almost instantly to a light covering like it was a fake head, hazy but I can see the column of sediment swirling in the middle of the murky golden wheat colored beer.

Nose is fairly typical hefe, wheat, citrus, a nice banana, hint of clove spices, a fruity and light malty aroma.

Taste is also typical, wheat flavors though a bit watery, some banana and hint of clove, slightly yeasty, although juicy. a bit malty, some light citrus, zest, bit fruity. Not much else going on but it's pretty much what it should be maybe slightly watery. Finish is fairly dry, lingering citrus, wheat, and light yeast.

Mouth is lighter bodied, good carb.

Overall not bad, nothing really wrong, typical hefe flavors, nice sumer wheat beer. (990 characters)

Bottled date was Nov 30 2011.

Appearance is a cloudy light gold to straw with a hefty white head. The head faded quickly, leaving very little lacing. Clove scents were prominent, along with some lemon, but there was also a bitter metallic scent that was a bit off-putting. Thankfully, the taste was much better - typical hefe flavors of banana and clove, and it had a nice bubble-gum sweetness that I really enjoy in a good hefe. Carbonation was high, typical for the style. This has to be on the short list of good American-brewed hefeweizens. (545 characters)

pils glass requested, into german mug as it'll have to do.

Nice bright golden color, big foamy head that is 3-fingers plus. Very creamy, slightly off white. Takes a while to settle down.

One whiff and I get a lot of honey/floral sweetness and some strong yeast notes.

Taste confirms. Mild banana and the yeast backs off a bit. Very mellow but enjoyable. Mildly grassy, some twinge of tart apple too. Pleasing finish.

A bit light for the style but pretty refreshing. I enjoyed this one. (491 characters)

A – Banana gold with a light haze. Decent head.

S – Bubble gum, light sour apples, banana, and a lace of salad greens. Strange, but surprisingly pleasant.

T – Bright, prickly lemon acidity mellows into sweet banana, caramel, and Clementine. The finish is fantastic, and absolutely loaded with wheat.

M – Lively carbonation into a smooth, medium-full body. Sweet finish.

O – Refreshing with a great wheat character. (428 characters)

Poured into a Samuel Smith pint glass on 11/30/11

Bottled July 2011

Clear, pale light straw color. Lots of cling to the inside of the glass briefly. Two fingers of porous foam condense to 1/4th inch and thins out to nothing from there. No lace.

Pleasant enough aroma of prairie grass, clove, tangy wheat, ripe apple and banana. Yeast overtones emerge periodically and there's a slight dirtiness underneath. Flavor-wise there is a pretty strong grassy hop kick that seems out of place, especially paired with high carbonation found here (the feel pushes well past "crisp" and gets right to "sharp"). Clove, tangy apple and banana, too. Interestingly enough, the wheat seems subdued; I'd appreciate more of it. Finishes dry and grassy. It has a weird coating feel, too.

Though not an altogether reprehensible beer, I think it falls pretty far from the style mark. Even labeled as an American Pale Wheat it would still need several fine tunings to make it stand out. (967 characters)

Cloudy golden, with rather tame carbonation and head. Practically no lace at all.

Scent of bananas, clove, and some orange. Very good!

Taste is quite pleasant. I get a sweet rush up front, followed by a strong wheat and spice tanginess towards the finish. Very representative of the style.

A very well-done hefeweizen, and well worth a repeat purchase. (355 characters)

A gift from Grant, a top-notch BA. Sampled 1/21/11. A notch on the label indicates bottling in the first week in December.

A: A huge 5 finger head when poured down the center of a hefeweizen glass. Pristinely white, mousse-like, compact foam. The head never completely fades. The body is cloudy and light yellow in color.

S: Bread, wheat and biscuits. Light hops of citrusy lemon. Dried banana and bubblegum. Barely noticeable hint of vanilla. Mild clove suggestions, but the aroma is more fruity esters than it is spicy phenols.

T: The finish is dominated by banana, the only remaining flavor after the effervescence clears the tongue.

M: Spritzy with prickly carbonation. Light to medium body.

D: The flavor and mouthfeel really come together once the beer gains a few degrees and the dies down. Solid brew. (815 characters)

Had this on tap at Broadway Brewhouse

Pale honey gold with a finger of foamy bright white head. This beer is all kinds of hazy. Looks very enticing

The scent given off is dominated by bananas. Subtle clove background with some really nice bubblegum notes

The taste follows the nose. Great banana taste but lacking depth. Still, very refreshing

Medium bodied with ample amounts of carbonation.

I thought this was a very refreshing Hef and not a bad first beer for me to try in Nashville. I definitely recommend trying this out if you have a chance (552 characters)

Had this on the brewery tour.

Poured from growler into souveneir tumbler.

A- Bright yellow, extremely hazy due to unfiltered yeast, nice 2 finger head.

S- Bananas! It is amazing how much this beer smells like bananas.

T- Nice wheaty banana taste. Some spice, smooth taste. Guide said that this would be similar to blue moon, but there were not that many similarities to me, maybe she was just trying to find something that many people would have tried.

M- Very light and wheaty.

O- A new taste for me with the banana characters. I have had a few wheat beers and I think this one definitely has a unique character. (620 characters)

Pours a slightly hazy solar yellow with a thin white head - not impressive, but I am prejudiced in favor of dark beers, so I'll go easy since it's a hefe. Strong aroma is wheaty and yeasty with a slightly sweet lemon overtone. Yummy flavor is wheaty and yeasty and has a firm citrus undertone. There is a slight soapy hint, but this comes and goes. Texture is thick, smooth and finely fizzy. A good summer beer. (411 characters)

a - poured a two-fingers thick bubbly and white head into a weizen glass that disappeared way too quickly. the body was a slightly hazy, straw gold color.
s - yeasty with some straw hop aromas.
t - nice balance between lemons and bananas with a hint of yeastiness.
m - very crisp and thin, bubbly.
o - good hefe but i was very disappointed in the carbonation. (359 characters)

Bottled 5/7/2011, I think (the date is smeared, but it has the new Yazoo bottle labels, so it is fresh.) Consumed July 4, 2011.

A- A glowing, hazy, unfiltered orange. This looks like what a hefe should, as best as I can tell.

S- Big banana notes. Some cloves. A little bit of peppery spice. Again, this smells dead on for the style.

T- Cool and refreshing. A wave of fresh banana and yeast roll over the palate, with just a bit of a spicy kick on the finish.

M- Light and easy drinking. A wonderful summer beer that is going down great as I grill some chicken on the 4th.

O- I admit to being a bit of a biased Nashvillian on this one. The is the beer that turned me on to hefes years ago, and it is still my go to for the style. Just an awesome example of the style that I can always get fresh. A must grab if you love wheat beers, and something you should try if you don't. (879 characters)

This is much better on tap fresh from the brewery than out of the bottle. It looks like the typical hefeeweizen. Cloudy, hazy and grainy with a thin white head and spotty lace. The smell is faint and grainy with a back draft of banana, cloves and pepper. The taste is a bit thin and watery up front, but perfectly balanced between the banana and cloves. hints of black pepper and a tart hop bite in the background. A bit thin and watery, but a creamy swallow. Simple, refreshing, and easy to drink. (498 characters)

A decent hefe.

Nose is citrus, a bit lemony.

First sip is tart, highly carbonated, and there's a hint of banana and clove there, but not as much as I'd like.
Solid hefe though... one of the best American offerings...

It's official.. the hop project beers remain my favorites from this brewery... and I'm not even really a hophead.

Worth trying, and the price is right, but I won't revisit it too much with the competition in this style that I have access too. For 3 bux more I coulda bought a 6 of Hacker-Pschorr, and probably should of.

This one is alright on spice... not enough clove, not enough viscosity, not enough of anything really(except for car and its a bit overdone). Well made, but not world class or original.

Let's face it... the Americans haven't figured this one out yet... GRANTED THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST ATTEMPTS I've tasted... Yazoo is something that I can get within a week of it's bottling - so I'm a little biased here... and this is a very drinkable offering... not nearly as complex or to the unfiltered quality standards of say Schneider-Weiss or other German offerings of that caliber... but hey... at least we improved upon the stout... best american Hefe imo... or for what I've had which is only about 20-25 different offerings... worth a try for sure. (1,288 characters)

Pours a cloudy light straw color with 1 finger off white head, which retained most of the way down the glass. Per bottle recommendation, swirled and dumped yeast sediment right on top, which left a light brown trail on top of the head.

Smells exactly like most of hefeweizens I've had. Bananas and cloves come through strong, especially the former.

Taste follows the nose well. Tasty, bready wheat malt with a good dose of the banana tones. Very refreshing taste.

Feels slightly heavier in body than I usually remember from this style (I haven't drank a hefe in a while, so I'm going off memory). Coates the tongue pretty well, doesn't feel thin at all. The head retention probably helps attribute to the mouthfeel.

Overall very drinkable. The weather is warming up here so I will probably finish this 6 pack by tomorrow. A very tasty & refreshing beer, especially for a style which I normally don't care much for. Maybe I have a newly found respect for it now. (969 characters)

Served on tap in a pint glass. Hazy yellow body with a small head that faded quickly. Little lacing.

Decent aroma but light here as well. A little citrus and bready wheat. A hint of banana and spices in the background.

Solid hefeweisen flavor. Spicy yeast followed by banana and clove. Some light bubble gum in the background. More impressed with the flavor than I thought I would be.

Overall a nice representation of the style. Good for Yazoo. (447 characters)

12oz brown bottle with a "bottled on" date.

Vigorous pouring produces a tall order of white head, a stiff swirl of the bottle to get some yeast in as well makes the brew hazy straw in appearance. Soft banana bread and a twang of clove in the nose, yeasty. A bit smooth, a bit slick and a bit crisp in the lighter body. Bready palate, banana taffy, faint clove, nutty yeast and some other vague fruity esters in the back. Semi-dry finish.

Pretty spot on for the style, good drinking ... I'd perfer more smoothness here but now I am splitting hairs. (549 characters)

Poured from 12oz bottle. Thanks to Supernova777 for the pour. Josh you shouldn't have!

A- Pours a hazy yellowish orange color. One finger white head shows low retention and leaves very light streaks of lacing on the sides of the glass.

S- Good typical hefe aromas come to the nose. Clove, banana, and a light yeasty scent hit first. There is a light wheat undertone to this nose. Some light citrus notes along with a light alcohol whiff in the ending bring out the aroma.

T- The inital flavor was citrus forward which tended to die down the more I drank of this. Wheat notes were big and maybe some of the boldest parts of the flavor. Banana and clove came through from the middle on toward the ending. The alcohol made itself apparent toward the ending of the beer but was light about it. Average tasting with a little extra something about it.

M- Light mouthfeel. Carbonation was good for the style. Light citrus and banana flavors along with wheat left on the palate. Aftertaste was more wheaty along with a touch of light alcohol and banana clove combo. Alcohol had a light drying on the palate. Flavor was a little off but I couldn't put my finger on it how...I don't know if it was just a little too watery for my liking with this style.

D- I thought this beer was a good offering. Not the most mind blowing Hefeweizen I have had but a good one. This is my first beer from Yazoo and I like what I think they could do. The ABV was light and hidden well. The flavor was a little lacking at times but the drinkability kind of made up for it. (1,552 characters)

Smell is nice, with some citrus, graininess, slight malt sweetness and some banana.

Much of the same. Bit more on the banana though.

Cloudy yellow, fine rising bubbles, one finger head that dissipates into a sheen, thick clumpy lacing.

Smells typically heffish with yeasty cloves and banana aromas, plus some wheat and a touch of "wet dog." A good smelling hef (wet dog is not necessarily bad).

A slightly plastic/modeling glue taste detracted a bit from what was otherwise probably a pretty good hef. Cloves and bananas, yeast and wheat, very typical once again.

Feel is average. Thin with a little carbonation tang, light body.

Average drink. Not a bad hef but not a great one either. (559 characters)
