Style | ABV
English Porter |  5.70% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
A rich, chocolaty English Porter with a clean finish. We use the finest floor-malted Maris Otter malts from England, the same malts used for the best single-malt scotch. A portion of malted rye gives a spicy, slightly dry finish.

12 oz bottle served at about 55F in a goblet. Purchased and consumed a few months past BB date, but bought and stored refrigerated.

Flavor: Chocolate and sweet malts. Slighty sweet balance for style
Finish is a mess of flavors, probably due in part to the rye.

Feel: medium-full body with excellent, near-medium carbonation.

O: worth trying.

A medium sized light brown head that settles into a decent lacing above a clear dark reddish amber colored beer.

Dark roasted caramel to chocolate malt aroma with a bit of dark fruits sneaking in there.

The taste is very similar to the aroma deep dark roasted caramel to chocolates with a bit of those dark fruits sneaking in there.

A roasted dry aftertaste with a bit of the dark malts hanging around on this medium bodied porter.

A pretty good tasting beer, I could use a few of these on a chilly autumn night.

A buddy brought a variety pack back from a trip to Nashville. The beer pours a nice color which was slightly less dark than Guinness, with a tan head. The rye was indeed sly - the beer wasn't as astringent as I had anticipated. While not as bitter as I would expect from a porter, I found it quite drinkable, and wouldn't hesitate to purchase it if I found it in my part of the country.

Poured from 12oz bottle. Thanks to SuperNova777 for sharing. Josh you have made me happy once again...now lets get this band together!

A- Pours a deep dark brown..borderline black color. One finger tan head shows poor retention. Light spots of lacing on the sides of the glass.

S- Lots of roasted malts in the front of the glass. Some light vanilla and bitter chocolate notes toward the middle. Light spicy rye and hops in the ending. Simple yet effective.

T- Roasted malts in the front have a little something off about them. Not a terrible off flavor but there was something there. Middle has some light chocolate notes with some more roasted malts. Ending is interesting as the rye is there but comes in to just fade away to a light smokey (not roasted) flavor. The rye kicks it back into high gear with a warming alcohol before finishing up.

M- Light mouthfeel. Carbonation is good for the style. A little watery in the mouth at times. Roasted malts left on the palate. Aftertaste is rye and roasted malts with a hint of alcohol. Light drying on the palate from the alcohol. Flavors were a little muted and muddled I thought. A little bit of a off flavor keeps this beer from tasting clean.

D- This beer drinks easy and smooth for the most part. The watery at times mouthfeel makes this a good drinkability beer meaning you can have a ton of this. ABV is low so drinking a lot wouldn't be a problem as well. Overall a above average beer but not by much.

Thanks to unclejedi for this 12 oz bottle.

A: The rye porter is a dark ruby red color that, when concentrated in my glass, looks almost black. A thin off-white head came along for the ride, leaving no lace behind.

S: The nose is generally that of a porter, dark and roasted. Rye adds a mild spiciness. Very dark and very sweet smelling.

T: The porter is solid, even with the addition of the rye. Dark chocolate, milky sweet, drives the flavor. A lactic sweetness follows, complementing the chocolate. Rye finishes things off, anisey though mild. The dark malts are the highlight but the rye finish hits the right spot. A better than expected porter.

M: The mouthfeel is smooth, sweet with lactose and chocolate. The darker, more bitter malts finish the flavors off nicely, and the rye adds a spicy dimension.

D: This porter is incredibly drinkable, sweet and dark without any harsh bitter flavors. I love the rye.

Thanks to Jim for this one! Review from written notes.

Murky dark brown with tawny reddish accents around the edges. Sudsy tan foam that leaves flecks on the glass. Retention was pretty good, it maintained at least an unbroken skim for the duration of the glass.

Deeply malty, bready rye spice, roast malt and chocolate in the aroma.

Flavor is very similar, malt driven and spicy with the rye component, blending seamlessly with the creamy milk chocolate of the porter side of things. Medium bodied, slightly dense from the malt content, easily sipped or quaffed. Interesting balance of rye and chocolate malt here, more sweet than bitter, but not overly so. Definitely worth a try, it's a different animal than Sue.

Bottle: Poured a dark black color porter with a dark foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma consists of spicy rye notes with light roasted malt and some black chocolate notes. Taste is also dominated by spicy rye notes with some dry roasted m alt notes with light black chocolate notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Well brewed with rye contributing some interesting complexity.

I'm reviewing this one so I can add another state to my profile. And it's a pretty good beer. Yazoo is a hidden gem down in TN.

Opaque black with about a one finger french vanilla head. Slowly settles to a foamy ring along the glass. When I lift the glass, there are ruby highlights at the bottom around the edge.

The aroma is light but still has a good amount of complexity. A touch of molasses is in the background, along with some chocolate. The rye adds a dry graininess.

The rye sets up the base with a little bit of a sour tinge. There are some hops in there as well that compliment it well with a bit of bitterness. The hops are balanced with a little bit of sweet chocolate. The roasted malts come though as well, and come out almost like roasted black coffee. Rather full bodied with just the right amount of carbonation. The chocolate and coffee hang on well after each sip.

A very good porter, and I'm not sure I've ever had one with rye. A good stand up beer, well made, well rounded, and definitely worth a six-pack at least. Recommended.
