English Porter |  5.70% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
A rich, chocolaty English Porter with a clean finish. We use the finest floor-malted Maris Otter malts from England, the same malts used for the best single-malt scotch. A portion of malted rye gives a spicy, slightly dry finish.

A-Pours very dark, almost black with a thin tan head that dissipates immediately.

S-Some chocolate, roasted malt, and hint of dark fruits

T-Dark fruits along with a hint of chocolate and coffee, and a touch of roasted malt

M-Syrupy and somewhat thin

D-One could drink this all day long, no problem. A true session beer.

Overall, this beer was great. It was unlike any other porter I've had before because it seemed much more dark fruit forward than roasted. It was semi-sweet, but no where near too sweet. I'm glad I tried this while in Nashville.

I'm reviewing this one so I can add another state to my profile. And it's a pretty good beer. Yazoo is a hidden gem down in TN.

Opaque black with about a one finger french vanilla head. Slowly settles to a foamy ring along the glass. When I lift the glass, there are ruby highlights at the bottom around the edge.

The aroma is light but still has a good amount of complexity. A touch of molasses is in the background, along with some chocolate. The rye adds a dry graininess.

The rye sets up the base with a little bit of a sour tinge. There are some hops in there as well that compliment it well with a bit of bitterness. The hops are balanced with a little bit of sweet chocolate. The roasted malts come though as well, and come out almost like roasted black coffee. Rather full bodied with just the right amount of carbonation. The chocolate and coffee hang on well after each sip.

A very good porter, and I'm not sure I've ever had one with rye. A good stand up beer, well made, well rounded, and definitely worth a six-pack at least. Recommended.

12 ounce bottle
Served in a perfect pint glass

A - It is very dark brown with ruddy highlights. There is an inch and a half of tan head that just sits on top and is thick as hell. It reminds me of a Guinness head.

S - The smell is full of rich chocolate and fresh roasted coffee. I even get some earthy, nutty notes.

T - The taste carries what the smell brought to the party. At first I thought is was a bit mild, but these flavors jump out at you. The is some chocolate through the middle. This beer finishes with a strong black coffee taste with its bitterness.

M - Moderate to full

O - This beer fits right in with the Sam Smith's beers. This is a great English porter. It is loaded with aroma and flavor. This beer exceeded all expectations.

Picked up a Grower of this at the tap room after trying the sampler and choosing it as my favorite (no Hop Project or Sue available).
Pours a dark brown with a creamy light tan, almost off white head.
I can smell some dark chocolate and roasted malts. Also smell somethinig else that might be the rye.
Lots of chocolate flavor with the roasted malt bitterness and a pretty pronounced but not over powering rye flavor.
The mouthfeel is creamy and smooth making for great drinkability.
I think this is one of the better beers producted by Yazoo

appearance: dark brown/black, 1 finger off white head

smell: chocolate, caramel, malt, bread

taste: chocolate, lots of bready notes, coffee aftertaste, very well balanced, somewhat watery taste.

mouthfeel: really smooth, sits well on the palate

overall: great balanced porter, but wish it had a higher ABV and it would be a truly outstanding beer, just a little too watered down for my liking. You can thank tennessee beer laws for that one. I'd rather have YAZOO's SUE anyday, even though that's not a porter.

Thanks to unclejedi for this stubby, brought north & hand-delivered during Darkness Day. I know not if unclejedi knew of my rye obsession beforehand, if this was happy coincidence, or he has keen foresight...

Pours just shy of black, thinning around the temples to brown. Nose is nice on this fella, rich chocolate, sweet malt, & a finger-tingling feather of rye. I like it already.

Sly Rye is a fine addition to either the constellation of rye beer or porters. It mirrors the nose to a T-bone, except that the rye is more forward, imparting a bitter bite & heady spiciness that leaves the tongue aquiver. Roast shows up strong, too. In the end one is left with the spicy shot across the tongue & a rich, full chocolate-laced porter.

Excellent beer. One of the better porters I've had in a while, & packing this much flavor into a brew under 6% ABV is always to be applauded. Very nice.

Got my growler refilled over the weekend at the brewery and decided to go with the rye porter.

Pours a burgundy-brown color with a 1.5 finger head.

Smell is some chocolate and a whiff of spiciness from the rye. Taste is a little chocolate with a nice roasted malt backbone. There is a nice bit of coffee on the finish.

This one toes the line between porter and stout. The mouthfeel is medium, and drinkability is great. I have to be honest that I didn't go in to this one with much expectation after reading some of the reviews, but I really did enjoy it.

Had this on draft at Findley's, in Opryland. Color was slightly less dark than Guinness, with a tan head. The rye was indeed sly - the beer wasn't as astringent as I had anticipated. While not as bitter as I would expect from a porter, I found it quite drinkable, and wouldn't hesitate to purchase it if I found it in my part of the country.

On tap at the Yazoo Tap Room.

A - Very nice medium to dark brown color. Off white two finger head. Good retention with excellent lacing.

S - Strong roasted malt aroma. Hints of coffee and chocolate with a little spice mixed in. The rye adds a nice dimension to your standard porter aroma.

T - Light roasted malt sweetness initially. Bitter chocolate then comes in, quickly matched by a dry rye spiciness. Finishes with a spicy bitterness and lingering flavor of roasted chocolate.

M/D - Medium to full bodied with a somewhat dry, yet still creamy feel. Carbonation just high enough to provide life to the feel. Very easy drinking.

A – Dark cherry brown with cranberry highlights. Nice bone white head has nice retention and ok lace.

S – Sweet oats, cream, buckeweat honey and light roasted coffee.

T – Peppery rye up front with a soft, sweet caramel. Coffee roast and condensed milk melt into a sweet, cream soda finish.

M – Medium body with a soft creaminess.

O – Very sweet, but the profile manages to handle it. The rye is a really nice touch.

Had this on tap in the Yazoo taproom from a pint glass.

Appearance is a very dark brown, almost black, with a small tan head.

Smell is of roasted malts, chocolate and spices. Nice malty aroma was very inviting.

Taste was rich and creamy, with strong malt flavor. Also tasted dark chocolate with a slight bitterness and spices that I assume come from the rye.

Mouthfeel was clean. The malty sweetness finishes with a slightly dry aftertaste.

Drinkability is very good. I could see having several of these in a row. A solid porter overall.

Thanks to unclejedi for this 12 oz bottle.

A: The rye porter is a dark ruby red color that, when concentrated in my glass, looks almost black. A thin off-white head came along for the ride, leaving no lace behind.

S: The nose is generally that of a porter, dark and roasted. Rye adds a mild spiciness. Very dark and very sweet smelling.

T: The porter is solid, even with the addition of the rye. Dark chocolate, milky sweet, drives the flavor. A lactic sweetness follows, complementing the chocolate. Rye finishes things off, anisey though mild. The dark malts are the highlight but the rye finish hits the right spot. A better than expected porter.

M: The mouthfeel is smooth, sweet with lactose and chocolate. The darker, more bitter malts finish the flavors off nicely, and the rye adds a spicy dimension.

D: This porter is incredibly drinkable, sweet and dark without any harsh bitter flavors. I love the rye.

Bottled on 2nd wk. of Sept. Received this as a bonus in a trade from unclejedi - thanks man!

Poured into my old school stemmed Busch Bavarian Lager dimpled chalice an opaque root beer color with a settled 1/4" light beige head. No lace to speak of.

Smell is deeep dark chocolate with a woody note at the end. The smokey element is very prevalent but is still masterfully integrated with the chocolate notes, balancing it out very nicely. I'm getting some vanilla, ALMOST like from a bourbon barrel aging - but I know this beer is not barrel aged. very nice nose indeed.

The flavors come in big waves. First, the chocolate swells and starts to break just as the spicy rye creates the white water. A huge hit of shoe leather splashes about as the faint dark fruit creates the undertow. The smoke flavor calms the surface, just in time for the next wave (or gulp) takes place.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a lovely leather/cocoa/vanilla/wood smoke aftertaste lingers long. The carbonation is level is 5 out of 10 and is finer than normal.

Drinkability is very good. I'd have no problem sessioning this with a warm fire and good friends. Or warm friends and a good fire.

Overall a highly complex porter without any smugness or fakeness. This baby screams Northern Michigan, even though it's brewed in Nashville. I really like how balanced and still 'offset' this ale is. Good job Nashville!

Had on tap at the Yazoo brewery. Pitch black in color with a foamy, creamy head to it.

The aroma shows some chocolate mixing with a little roasty coffee. Some sweeter, creaminess and a little bready, spicy rye are noticeable as well. It comes together pretty well.

The taste has some cocoa flavors coming out up front with roasted malts and a little rye to it in the finish. Nice range of flavors to it and pretty smooth overall.

The mouthfeel is creamy and slick with moderate carbonation. Great mouthfeel for the style. Overall it was a very flavorful and drinkable beer. I really liked the little bit of rye flavor in it. Very solid beer all around, especially for the style.
