Style | ABV
English Porter |  5.70% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
A rich, chocolaty English Porter with a clean finish. We use the finest floor-malted Maris Otter malts from England, the same malts used for the best single-malt scotch. A portion of malted rye gives a spicy, slightly dry finish.

A:Pours a darker brown color with a tan head that has not so great lacing hanging around

S:Slight roasted malts come thru intially with some spicy notes as well. Nothing to great or exciting

T:Pretty much the same as the nose with roasty and spicey notes coming thru with
nothing really to brag about

M:Lighter mouthfeel on this with a watery type body, raosted malt notes are left hanging
around on the palate.

D:Overall this was easy to drink but lacking in the flavor and excitement department,
Think I would pass on this if there was a next time to try it

A = a dark ebony color with a 1/2" tanish head that dissapated rather quickly

S = very slight with roasted malt

T = definite roasted taste with some coffee undertones. not nearly as flavorful as I had hoped, but then again this was my first porter.

M = A lot lighter than I had anticipated. Almost as light as a lager.

D = This went down very easily but overall wasn't as good as I hoped. It's obviously better than most macros but not my choice in craft beers. I much prefer yazoo's stout.

Thanks to unclejedi for leaving this behind.

A-Pours dark, opaque brown with just a hint of burgundy at the bottom of the glass. Thin off white head, no real lacing.

S-Nice roasted malt and some sweet caramel as well.

T-A bit underwhelming after the nice nose. Some good roast in the front, then some caramel sweetness, then...nothing. Finishes very fast and far short of the runway.

M-Light side of medium, good carbonation

D-Nice, pleasant, not particularly memorable.

12 oz bottle served at about 55F in a goblet. Purchased and consumed a few months past BB date, but bought and stored refrigerated.

Flavor: Chocolate and sweet malts. Slighty sweet balance for style
Finish is a mess of flavors, probably due in part to the rye.

Feel: medium-full body with excellent, near-medium carbonation.

O: worth trying.

Poured into a nonic pint glass on 4/11/13

Bottled on date: 27 Sep 12

Dark tobacco juice brown with a short, 1/3rd inch head. The foam fizzles away quickly (not as fast as, say, Dr. Pepper). Come to think of it, it looks like cola. Not a speck of lace.

Tangy roast aroma with rye and cocoa. Nutty overtones. Hints of some subtle dark fruit; plum perhaps? Though it smells sharp, the taste is smoother. Dark roast, modest rye and bitter chocolate. Earthy finish. When coupled with the body the beer seems thin. Carbonation is reasonable by comparison.

Not too bad. I like it better as it warms up. Pretty dismal appearance though.

From a bottle that was bottled Mar 7 2012 and tasted Nov 2 2012

Pitch black with minimal lacing.
Heavy smell of carmel sweetness.
Taste is more like an ESB than a Porter. It is lacking a dry black malt character.

Reminds me of a Guiness Extra Stout. No real flaws but not what I look for in a Porter.

Had this on 2014-12-09 in Gallatin, TN from a bottle.

A - Dark brown with a 1/2-finger tan head and moderate lace.

S - Milk chocolate and mild-medium roasted grain, touch of milk. Fairly mild.

T - Slightly burnt sourdough rye bread, a bit of chocolate, mild pepper and earthy spice. Not very sweet.

M - Light body and medium-heavy carbonation. On the thin side.

O - The sourdough rye flavors in this brew diminished from what I like in a roasty porter. A decent brew but not in the same league as a Founders Porter.

Appearance: Arrives at the bar with a dark brown body and a pale head that leaves little lacing

Smell: Modest notes of roasted malt

Taste: Roasted grainy taste on the front end followed by a bit of coffee and a very dry finish, presumably from the rye

Mouthfeel: Light/medium body; rather fizzy

Drinkability: Lacks body - needs more malt; I was looking forward to tasting this as I was intrigued by the rye (having enjoyed other rye beers - particularly the Terrapin Rye Pale Ale) but was disappointed by the beer's flaws

I drank two pints of this one at a bar in Nashville.
The appearance was very good: a deep brown color with red highlights when held to the light, and a nice, ivory-colored head about 3/4-inch tall.
While this Porter had the proper outward appearance, the taste was rather disappointing --- not BAD, but not at all what I like in a Porter. Perhaps it was me, but I found there was little to no fore- or mid-taste, and the aftertaste was slightly bitter. I prefer more coffee and chocolate signature, so this one let me down.
I'll quite possibly try it again, at a different location if possible, for fairness' sake.

Poured from a 12oz bottle. Minimal head that quickly dissipates. When it does, it appears exactly like a flat diet Coke would.

Smells of peppery chocolate with a slight whiff of biscuit. Nose is fairly light.

Medium viscosity with a slight bit of over carbonation prevailing.

To be honest, I expected a little more out of the taste. Has a burnt roast feel to it with a somewhat flat finish, even for a Porter. The rye does shine through which is it's one lone saving grace.

Poured into Bells snifter.

Pours 1/2 finger of light beige beige head. Color is a dark copper brown.

Aroma: Roasted malts, vanilla, chocolate, and a hint of rye. The chocolate is sweet, yet dark flavored.

Taste: The taste doesn't click as well. The flavors don't match up like they do in the nose. An odd roast with a burnt malt flavor. Spice and rye shows. Some chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Roasted and creamy. Medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends dry with spices.

Overall, it is an alright porter. The nose was the most enjoyable part of the beer. The taste just wasn't there. Fairly average.

JohnQVegas sent this to me a while ago. Beer is brown with nearly no head. Lacing and carbonation low.

Aroma is mildly spicy but mostly roasty and really weak. Not an impressive impression.

Beer is thin at leadoff and finishes really weak. There is a minimal sweetness, almost nothing in the midpalate and some rye and roast at the end that disappears quickly. Not a very good beer.

Growler poured into a tulip

A: Pours black with a tan colored head that lasts a very short while.

S: Smells predominantly of coffee with some chemical acidity and a slight nutty quality.

T/M: Flavor is relatively thin with some English ale bitterness, notes of coffee, medium carbonation and a nutty finish.

It's a pretty decent porter but average overall.
