English Porter |  5.70% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
A rich, chocolaty English Porter with a clean finish. We use the finest floor-malted Maris Otter malts from England, the same malts used for the best single-malt scotch. A portion of malted rye gives a spicy, slightly dry finish.

Found the beer at Flying Saucer, Nashville. Looking for something with more character, but not quite a Stout. The beer opens with a heavily roasted, lightly chocolate blend, with some Brown Ale sweetness and a hint of cereal grains. The beer tastes more like a Stout with high chocolate notes than it does a Porter. A robust rye character takes charge as the sweetness subsides, leaving a pumpernickle spice, bread, pungent character behind. The body is certainly on the porter side, showing a deleicate smooth, velvety texture, aside from the roasted grain textures. Finishes with a nice blend of chocolate, coffee, and rye. All in all, the rye character was light and at times, hardly noticable.

Thanks to PaulV for shipping this one up! Poured into a fluted pint glass, revealing ruddy deep brown body over decently tall, quickly dissipating off-white head. Some bubbles, a little lacing. Smells nice and smoky with good malt presence and a little orange zest and dark chocolate on the nose. Slight kiss of fruit. Very nice smelling!!!

Tastes rich and mealy with some raw chocolate character and decently light roasted notes. Full of savory flavor. Slight bitter ending, a little peppery with a touch of citrus hop presence. Carbonation is thicker and tingly on an otherwise watery smooth light-bodied beer. Full in flavor, but decently drinkable. An overall winner.

This may be my favorite Yazoo brew to date. I'm not good enough yet to pick out the rye's role, but I like it more than others with rye that I've tried.

Pours nice and dark. Nice lacy head. No light is penetrating this bad boy. Smell isn't very strong. Dark and rich flavor. Just right on the bitterness. Anymore and it would be too much for me. Porters aren't my favorite. I enjoyed this one though. First beer by Yazoo.

Wife's Review: "Oh its very good. It is kind of fruity isn't it? Delicious."
