Notes/Commercial Description:
The south is famous for smoking everything. Why not beer? Sue is a big, rich, smoky malt bomb of a beer, with mellow smokiness coming from barley malts smoked with cherry wood, and assertive bitterness from Galena and Perle hops to cleanse the finish.

Original tap version was 7.5% ABV, bottled version is up to 9%.

Nice extra, thanks Curtis!

Poured in a Bruery tulip at a moderately cool temperature. Dark brown with minimal tan head.

Smells like sweet wood smoke with some malt, appetizing.

Very nice smoke flavor, well integrated with malty chocolate and coffee. Delicious and well balanced.

Medium bodied, the rich flavor might work with a fuller body, but it's good. Smooth, with some creaminess from the tininess of the bubbles.

A pleasure to drink, I'm glad I had the chance to try this.

Bottled on 3-14-2014. On 6-12-14 poured a dark, opaque brown with a 4 inch khaki head that gradually diminishes leaving prominent, thick lacing.

The aroma was smokey malt, similar to smoked beef or beef jerky.

Taste was smokey malt with plum and chocolate followed by moderate clean hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel was creamy, moderate to heavy body, moderate carbonation and mild ethanol warming.

This beer strikes a perfect balance between a malt-forward porter, prominent but not overwhelming smokiness and a clean hop finish. I would serve this at 55F with grilled or smoked beef or duck or a rich chocolate desert. Would also be great on a cool night by the fire.

Bottle poured into a Half Acre pint glass.

A: Pours a dark brown, cola like color with three fingers of fluffy tan head that fades eventually, leaving a nice lacing around the crown of the glass.

S: Dark cocoa, cherry wood, and campfire smoke really shine through.

T: Malty black coffee, smoke, and tobacco flavors permeate. Some ripened plum flavors present. Virtually no alcohol burn or flavor for 9%.

M: Exceptionally smooth, medium body, remarkably drinkable.

O: I'm admittedly not a fan of smoked beers or porters, but this beer really knocks it out of the park in terms of flavor, mouthfeel, and overall drinkability. Would be a perfect companion to a fireplace or campfire on a cool night. A really, really nice treat.
