I went on a Wednesday night and it was packed. Very cool building and the space was nicely done. The service was slow, lots of standing in line. They do growler fills at the taproom as well, but no food. I would recommend, good place for happy hour if you are in town.

My recent two-day flurry of five brewpubs in Music City USA started off with a trip to the most widely known of the options present to me, Yazoo Brewing Company. I’d heard about it from our friends getting married in Nashville that weekend and had also read about it in Beer Advocate magazine, so it was a natural first choice. If it were good enough, I might not even make it to the other two brewpubs less than a half-mile away.

I made it to both of the others that night.

That’s not to say that Yazoo isn’t good, because it is. They easily have the most options available and the most interesting styles to try. They spiced up their porter with a bit of rye and also offered a white IPA that was pretty tasty. The Hop Project IPA constantly rotates the single hop variety used, which is a great way to please the crowd with an IPA while simultaneously keeping the menu fresh. Their maibock was pretty tasty too.

But that’s where the compliments end and the mediocrity begins. I’ve just been to too many other excellent places to be too impressed by a standard list of pale, alt, hefe, stout, blonde and amber. They were all clean and crips and refreshing—just not terribly exciting is all.

It’s hard to fault the brewers for this, however, as Tennessee has some of the most backwards beer laws in the country. Not only are their taxes on beer makers the highest in the land, they also tax any beer made over 6.2% ABV as liquor, which must be the reason I didn’t find anything over that the entire trip.

What they lack in strength and creativity, the mostly make up for in quality and location. The concrete-style building is large, clean and cozy. The bartenders are pleasant and happy to offer tastes. They don’t grumble when you ask for a sampler platter. They seem to know their shit.

So is Yazoo Brewing Company the best brewery in Nashville? It’s a close call, but on beer alone, I’d have to say yes.
