Poured this one out into the glass, and the impenetrable black abyss was formed. Huge tan head, maybe three inches high capped the top of it and only gradually settled down, leaving behind a thin veil across the top and loads of sticky brown lace. Very day, essentially black with no light shining through at all.
The aroma was loaded with roasted malts, though not as heavy as one would expect given the big look of it. Light hope notes were also noticed in here, with a small plum or raisin like note, almost like some dark Belgian yeast was used. As it warmed some light cocoa started to show as well. The flavor was more of the same. Started out with a nice bit of roasted malts, which then careened off into a slightly hoppy finish. Lots of cocoa and light licorice hints swirling around in the background, giving it some nice depth. Very nice feel, rich, full bodied, with good carbonation that led to never a dull moment, and something that would be best categorized as not very dry at all. Easy sipper, but at the same time with such a rich taste, and low ABV it was an easy drinking nightcap for sure.
Overall not a bad stout here I have to admit. A smooth drinking, nice session able beer from them, which was a welcome treat. Not sure what the age has done to it as it was still mighty fresh in flavor and vibrant in life. Overall I thought this was excellent and would go here again for sure.

Served in a flight of 2-3 oz. (not sure which) sampler mugs.
Black, nearly opaque in color, with ruby highlights when held to the light. Forms a slight creamy brown head that leaves a little lace on the glass.
Slight aroma of roasty coffee notes.
Rich and creamy; Flavors of espresso, roasted coffee, bitter dark chocolate, and a bit of warming alcohol meld together on the palate and lead into a short, light bitter finish; a tad dry.
A nice, bold, complex brew. Overall, a nice sipper, but not one to be quaffed.

Wow, this is an amazing brew! I had this one at the Aiken Scottish Games on tap. It was a very nice stout with a very heavy influence of coffee and chocolate flavors. I also though that this one had a taste and smell similar to red eyed gravy(for you yankees out there, red eyed gravy is coffee and ham drippings). Even though it was a heavier brew, it didn't weigh you down. It even had a quite refreshingness to it as well. I had a few while I was throwing and it kept me refreshed. All in all a wicked brew from the brewery. Don't know if I will ever be back in Aiken anytime soon, but if I do, I will definately try more of thier brews.

Appearance: Arrives at the table with a dark brown color and a creamy tan head that laces the glass
Smell: Brown bread, milk chocolate and a vague sense of oatmeal
Taste: Brown bread fades into oatmeal flavors and a watery finish
Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with a creamy mouthfeel and low levels of carbonation
Drinkability: This was the only disappointing beer of the five I tasted here - needs more flavor and a fuller body
