Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy |  8.90% ABV

Availability: Rotating

Notes/Commercial Description:
Also known as a “Wee Heavy”, this richly malty, dark ruby brown ale originated in Scotland where hops for bittering were not native and used only sparingly. This higher alcohol beer is characteristically lightly hopped resulting in a caramel sweetness with a roasted malt almost smoky aroma.

Appearance: Pours a nearly clear, dark brown-amberish body with a small-sized, beige-colored head.

Smell: Sweet-scented aroma with predominate malty notes of dark caramel cubes, toasted bread, and earthy grains. Notable note of ripe, juicy plums. Slight nuttiness.

Taste: Sweet upfront maltiness tasting of dark caramel slathered over crusty dark bread and raw grains. Deep plum-like fruitiness throughout. Additional hits of caramelized sugars with secondary taste of peanut brittle. Modestly bitter midway through. Small, quick hint of yeast prior to the sweetish, warming finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Very slight chewiness to the mouthfeel.

Drinkability: Solid, pleasant, appropriately malt-forward Wee Heavy out of Aiken. Definitely good for a few snifters out of the growler.

Nice burnished copper appearance with a rather thick off-white cap that displays good retention and sticks easily to the glass, living a fair amount of lace behind.

Butterscotch and roasted grain in the nose; mildly sweet but with a nice toasty nature that is rather unusual for the style.

A nice medium-full body greets the tongue, with some sweet caramel malt notes up front, but which are quickly replaced toward the middle by some chocolate and peatiness, with a softened grain character common to English malts. Finishes slightly sweet and roasty.

Not the greatest drinker out there; one of these would suffice. Alcohol presence is restrained and goes unnoticed, though the level is certainly formidable.

Overall this is a very decent example of a Wee Heavy. It is not nearly the malt bomb that many of the style tend to be, but it has a nicely unique character that sets it apart from the rest without being a real deviant. Nicely crafted.

My friends picked me up a growler of this on their way through SC. Poured in a shaker pint, the beer is a very dark, opaque, slightly hazed, ruby-brown coloring with a thin halo of off-white head on the surface. Aromas of rich caramel, scotch, dark cherries, raisin, booze, and some woody notes. Very layered aromas. Flavors are rich and robust on the forward tongue, with a blast of molasses and caramel, subtle chocolate undertones, boozy notes, and a roast characteristic at the end. Very rich and smooth bodied throughout, with a slow building warmth and subtle bitterness at the end to clean the brew up slightly. Heavy. The aftertaste is more of the layered rich flavors continuing to dominate, which is fine by me. Smooth, velvety finish with a slight linger and coating of the mouth. This is a very solid brew! Bravo!
