A 660ml bottle with a BB of Oct 2013. Acquired recently from Trembling Madness in York. The label describes it as a modern IPA hopped with new UK hop variety Jester (bred with US influences). Star Wars references abound....
Poured into a Delirium chalice (twice). Bottle conditioned. A bright golden-amber hue with medium carbonation. Produces a vast head of creamy white foam with good retention; it lasts for a while before subsiding to a surface layer. Nice lacing. Aroma of citrus, grass, grainy malt, earthy yeast and stewed hops. Hoppy but restrained in the manner of a classic English IPA. A smell to whet the appetite.
Tastes of light malt with a hoppy character and a dry bitter finish. Notes of citrus, grass/hay, mildly grainy malt, earth yeast and stewed hops. Dry and slightly spicy. A warming whiff of alcohol lurks in the background, followed by a distinct bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and nicely carbonated, with good body for the style. The hops produce a fantastic sensation on the palate. Highly astringent, with an aftertaste of bitter aromatic hops and earthy yeast.
Lovely. An excellent English IPA that is worthy of the style. Plenty of hops, though the character is grassier and more subtle than your typical American IPA. Nice aroma and great flavour; the mouthfeel is superb. Jester is a hop variety that I hope we'll hear more about in the coming years. A great brew that is well worth sampling - grab one if you see it.
