(at brewery, from notes) Dark brown almost black in color with a good amount of creamy brown head. Nice mocha/chocolate maltiness. Bitterness is apparent, especially in the finish, but does not overwhelm the malts. Overall, a very pleasant and drinkable beer.

12oz bottle, poured into a pint.

A- Pours a milky black, just a little transparency around the edges. Did not pour with much head, maybe half a finger, which quickly dissipated. Not much lacing, though not much would be expected.

S- Delicious toasted malt aroma with a subtle sweet chocolate note.

T- Well balance and mild, not much complexity, but tasty. There is a nice malty aftertaste on top of the tongue. The chocolate notes dissipate quickly which pleases this drinker.

M- A little watery, but not objectionable so. Minimal carbonation. Not that there should be a lot, but this could use just a tick more.

D- Very drinkable. Enjoy one glass with a steak, another with dessert and another for a night cap. A most sessionable stout.

This stout, on tap at a brewery restaurant, had a good dark, almost black color, but with a mild head. The smell had a mild but pleasant nose. The taste wasn't bad, but didn't rate high for me as a stout. The different tastes of chocolate, malt, and a hint of coffee just didn't compliment each other.

12 oz. bottle from brewery, poured 2.14.10 into Deschutes pint glass.

Dark brown, almost black body, no visible carbonation. One finger brown head, pretty quick dissipation and minimal lacing. Big chocolate hit on the nose, some coffee, and faint citrusy hops. The taste is chocolaty, minimal coffee at this juncture, little hops. Mouthfeel is full, a bit chewy and sticky. Not the most drinkable of brews, but certainly a nice dessert stout. Worth a try.

Thank to JackCow for the hookup.

Poured a jet black with a medium tannish head and good carbonation. Nose is a little funky, sour with cocoa and coffee. Taste is chcolate, roasted barley, coffee. Mouthfeel is is rather warm feeling for a beer with lower ABV. Creamy, roasty and a pleasure to drink.

Thanks to fishingnet for this one.

A: Pours a nice shade of brown with a moch head. Very little retention or lace.

S: Big roasted malt up front with bold notes of chocolate and coffee.

T: Mild but tasty. Wonderful roasted malt with a great level of velvet like chocolate goodness.

M: Medium in body, smooth, and tasty.

D: Good I really enjoyed this beer.

Pours a dark black with a dark tan thick head. Develops a great collar and excellent laciness. Smell was not complex but good. A lot of chocolate and some hops mixed in. Taste had some chocolate but a lot of coffee bitterness. Aftertaste had some slight tones of alcohol. Heavy body but a thin texture that finished smooth. I was told by the waitress that they had modified the recipe and they had the alcohol content up to 7%, having had both I didn't see much difference except in the flavor. The bitterness seemed to overpower the rest of the flavors. Still an excellent stout that I plan on having many more of.

Shaker glass at their Marina restaurant, Sternwheeler Stout is a dark, oily black, with a thin tan collar, no lace.

Smell is muted chocolate, dusty, lactose, touch of diacetly, with more caramel maltiness as it warmed from the cold serving temp.

Taste is nice and chocolaty, sweeter but with a strong, roasty and hoppy backbone, bitter and spicy. Drinks like an americanized export stout, with a finish that seems boozier then the brew actually. The finish is firm and bitting, a bit sharp, which is probably off-putting to the average 'try a micro on occasion' drinker.

Mouthfeel is dry and snappy, with a crisp carbonation and lighter body, it's actually pretty thirst quenching (which is why, with the sweetness, I thought export stout).

Drinkability is pretty good, a cold and crisp summertime stout, but maybe a bit to spicy, with a prickly tongue effect you get from big IPAs.

Sternwheeler is a longstanding member of Ice Harbor's regular lineup, but is thus far the only beer I've had at their relatively new alehouse on Clover Island. It came served a bit too cold, though manageably so.

But even its staunch coldness couldn't impede the strong chocolaty nose or potent coffee-chocolate-roast barley flavor. If anything, the flavor almost seemed too strong. Perhaps that indicates a bit more roast barley than suits my personal tastes. But there's no getting over the compelling immediacy of dominant roasted flavor - the kind that will utterly decimate your macro-swilling friends. It sure puts the stern in Sternwheeler.

The problem I had with this pleasantly bitter stout may have been isolated, but the beer refused to even entertain the notion of head or lace. It simply made no efforts. This shortcoming is surely related to the undercarbonated body, but the effect pulled the rug out from what is otherwise a competitive American stout. The beer wasn't stale. But it lacked an essential vitality that restrained drinkability. Perhaps it would have been best represented on nitro.

A most pleasant stout. Black with attractive off white head. Roasted barley, keeps me away from the coffee, and secondary chocolate. Very smooth and drinkable and refreshing. Lots of bitter hoppy notes that make life interesting. Not for everyone, a medium plus mouthfeel, and a worthwhile stout to be had, different and sans le cafe.

Received this brew from dnichols! Cheers!!!

Pours a dark black color with a minimal head! The smell is that of coffee. No chocolate what so ever. This beer smells good though. Lets give it a taste...

wow, this is a very nice stout! It has a nice mouth and loads of flavor! The taste is that of coffee, malts, and hops!

The mouthfeel is rich and full and highly drinkable.

Overall, I really like this stout. I'm more impressed with the stout VS the IPA! Then again I am a stout lover! Grab this brew if you can and send me a couple! ;-)

Cheers

appearance, pours black with an average head
smell, a subtle blend of chocolate and roasted malts
taste is a smooth chocolate and roasted malts much like the smell
mouthfeel is a little off, seems to have the consistency and carbonation similar to cola
drinkability overall this is a very drinkable beer which i've had a few times. As far as single stouts go this one is fairly complete with no real flaws but it doesn't have any remarkable features either

I bought a six-pack of Sternwheeler Stout at the brewery. Poured in to a pint tumbler.

Pours a jet black color and is opaque. A modest beige head tops the beer, but laces the glass nicely in spite of it's slight stature.

The smell is rather faint, a smoky charcoal coffee aroma.

The taste is good. A roasted flavor of coffee and dark chocolate, with a mild bitter finish.

Mouthfeel is good, light for a stout, not filmy or cloying, yet full bodied

A very drinkable stout, so drinkable that I might call it a porter. It's a smooth easy drinking dark brew, with a fairly low ABV. Very sessionable, and a nice brew for a cold winter evening.

Imacoug and I visited the brewery pub to round out our sampling of Ice Harbors beers.

A: It poured a very dark (almost tar black) with a big head that receded to a ring round the color and produced a nice caramel-tan lacing.

S: It had the dominate aroma of fresh brewed black coffee.

T: It tasted like a rich dark fresh coffee. There were few other flavors and I was disappointed there was not bitter semi-sweet chocolate or bite of hops to complement the flavor of black coffee.

M: Thin body with a no thickness, sweetness, or complexity making the body bland and the aftertaste boring.

D: There is nothing to dissuade one from having this again. However, I doubt I will...there are too many other beers out there that deserve my attention

Black color, small head. Pronounced roasted malt and chocolate mocha aroma. Toasted malt taste, with a hint of chocolate mocha. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter. Flavors are a little subdued, a subtle stout.

From Pasco, WA. Brewery seems to be named after the dam on the Snake River, which is only a few miles from Pasco. ABV not listed on bottle, but according to Ice Harbor website, it's 5.8%.
Very dark brown, impervous to light. Good, tan head. Moderate lacing. Aroma of toasty, coffeeish malts. Coffe malt taste is in the forefront, with a little bit of dark chocolate in the background. At the end, the hops come into play with a crisp zap to the palate. Mouthfeel is a little creamy, but not as much as other stouts I've had. Its not a bad stout at all, but its not essential drinking either. I'm anxious to visit the brewery next time I visit my parents, who live across the Columbia River from Pasco.

Tasted at the brewery.

Color = opaque, dark brown/black. Good thick tan head, long lasting.
Aroma = mocha (coffee, cocoa)
Taste/mouthfeel = tasty bittersweet stout, very nice creamy mouthfeel. Good flavor of bitter coffee/ sweet caramel from the roasted barley malt.

Looks good, smells great, tastes great. Easy to drink, a very good stout indeed.
