I had this on nitro-tap at Thirsty Bear in San Francisco, CA. It was a deep black color, with a foamy/creamy tan head and lots of lacing. It had a complex roasty aroma - something of chocolate and maybe even a hint of cherries? The taste was mainly of the roasted malt, and not as thick a mouthfeel as your typical Irish Stout - a bit more like a porter, except for the thick head.

Really tasty stout. I think some might be quick to call it basic, but the fact of the matter is it pours a beautiful black with foamy tan head, leaving a very good amount of lacing along the glass. Very fresh tasting. The smell is of malts, chocolate, a hint of caramel, a slight slight smokiness. Very smooth and not too bitter. Enjoyed this one a lot.

Part of the sampler platter. Reviewed 7/15/10.

P: Near black, opaque. Mocha head.

A: Standard aromas of roasted malts and coffee,

T: Very dry, barley flavor. Coffee ground flavors that are pretty bitter on the finish.

Too dry and too bitter on the finish. Very average.

Dark black with a dense, creamy tan head. Good head retention.

Pleasant roasty aroma with a mild nuttiness. Not bad but pretty middle of the road.

Acrid roast flavour with a mild bitter chocolate flavour and earthy hops. Well balanced.

Medium light body with moderate carbonation. Fine.

A solid stout with well balanced flavours. Nice.

I had a pint of this at the brewpub in San Franciso. I believe it was on nitro-tap, but I didn't ask after getting my beer because the bar was swamped. Pours an opaque black with a finger or 2 of white head. Lacing down the glass, nice head retention. Smells of huge roasted malt, mild coffee and chocolate. Some roasty bitterness in the flavour, mild sweetness. Very well balanced stout. Creamy mouthfeel from the nitro pour. My favourite of the 4 beers I had here.

look: semi-opaque black with transient dark brown head

nose: dark roasted malt reminds me of turkish coffee and abuelita hot chocolate.

taste: awesome dark coffee malts up front, with a nice clean cascade? bitterness coming through the back. The finish is one of those classic long roast stout and toffee finishes.

mouthfeel: fun viscosity without stickiness. Creamy but in a espresso crema way, not in a milkshake way.

drinkability: nitrogenated and dry this guy is set up to be very drinkable, and does not disappoint.

Very dark, near black in colour with a creamy tan cap. Great head retention with sticky thick rings of foam coating the glass. The aroma was mostly roasted malt with some dry cocoa - not bad. The flavour was mostly chocolate wtih some malt and hop bitterness, dry roast, and light toffee sweetness. Light bodied with a smooth, silky texture and low carbonation. Quite good.

On nitro-tap at Thirsty Bear on 7/13/09.

A - Dark brown body with walnut hues at the bottom and one-finger frothy nougat-colored head that settled to a quarter inch of retention and deposited thick, bubbly lacing around the glass, although it mostly slid down the glass.

S - Roasted malt with a hint of coffee and dark chocolate. Some earthy hop notes and cocoa became more apparent as it warmed up a bit.

T - Flavor is a little more on the chocolate side with the coffee character secondary. Some nuttiness is also present. Lots more roast in the finish with an earthy hop bitterness to bring it to a conclusion.

M - Medium body, a little slick but pretty thin and watery for a nitro pour overall. Lots of roasted bitterness with a tinge of nutty astringency on the palate. Earthy hop bite in the finish.

D - Solid dry Irish stout with a smooth nitro mouthfeel and prevalent chocolate/cocoa presence. Nothing amazing, but good all around.

A nice take on a stout from Thirsty Bear.

A: Black pout with a lasting 1 finter mocha-colored head.
S: Strong coffee nose with subtle chocolate notes.
T: Dense, but light-bodied coffee tones.
M: A bit watery. Dry taste.
D: Enjoyable and pronounced flavors. Definately a stout that would suprise non-beer drinkers who might think it was "heavy" based on its appearance.

Malty chocolate coffee smell, with a rich black color and light brown head to the bear and thick lacing. Taste is similar to the smell, with a hint of caramel. Some bitterness, but very drinkable, creamy and a bit dry in the finish, but not too much so.

Draught nitor sampler at the brewpub. Black body, with a small creamy tan head. Strongly roasted aroma, with chocolate notes. The flavour is rich and deep, with layers of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and smoke. Smooth and creamy on the palate. A very good stout.
