Update: 12/05

Hot Shots sheds the Raging Burrito tag and franchise obligation. Essentially the same joint though, same great service, good focus on craft brews. 31 draughts include (in additon to those mentioned in original review) Boulder Hazed & Infused & Mojo IPA, Ithaca Cascazilla and Custom Brewcrafters Christmas Ale.

Same menu basically. I had the Cajun Killer burrito which was huge, fresh and tasty as hell.

Don't forget there's two bars. What you see is not what you get. Ask what's on tap at the back bar too.

Happy hour 4:30 - 7:30, $2.00 pints. Hell yeah.

[Original review: 2/2004]

Raging Burrito is a bit different from most bars and restaurants. It is in fact, a combination of a bar, a Mexican restaurant and an indoor volleyball facility. Strange you say? Well, maybe a little. However each seems to effectively coexist with one another. The interior is enormous. Bar / restaurant area is huge. Volleyball courts are, for the most part, isolated from the bar and restaurant. But what it boils down to, as I recently discovered, is a casual place with some decent beers and some very cool and friendly folks as staff. The beer selection includes about 15 draughts at the main bar - that on my recent visit included; Ithaca - Double IPA, Nut Brown and Pale Ale, Rohrbach Brewing Scotch Ale and X Ale (a double hopped IPA), River Horse Belgian Frostbite, Lake Placid Ubu Ale, Brooklyn - Lager, Sustainable Porter and Brown as highlights. There is a secondary bar that has about ten more taps with worthy selections like Rohrbach Highland Lager, Harpoon IPA and UFO. The balance of the selection is rounded out by Sam Adams, Guinness, Honey Brown, etc. Their first in a series of monthly beer events last Saturday was a success and demonstrates their commitment to good beer in Rochester. The manager, Scott, also mentioned the potential for an indoor winter Brewfest in the future. The food is primarily Mexican themed (duh) and the forearm sized burritos are their specialty.

Keep an eye out on the BA calendar for the eventsÂ’ schedule and featured breweries for future tastings.

Checked out the bar during a saturday afternoon. Several indoor volleyball courts where tourneys are held, tall ceilings, bay door entrance in the summer weather, a little bit dark inside during the day. I think this is mostly a night spot due to the fact that there were only 2 people working and they were busy hanging out. I had a Hazed and Infused and thought it was decent. Lines seemed to be clean, beer was cold, clean glass. Not the best service due to being there at an off-hour I assume. Definite summer hang out.

NOTE: Raging Burrito is now known as Hot Shots

Stopped by for a cheap dinner and a beer before a concert in downtown Rochester and boy was I in for a surprise.

Althought the selection was only marginal, its worth it to be able to sit at a bar with a pint of Rohrboch and watch grown men give their all playing indoor beach vollyball behind a glass wall.

I got a chipotle BBQ burrito and my girlfriend got the cajun killer. They were each $8 and pretty damn good burritos, although I only recommend the cajun killer for someone looking for a lot of heat.

The staff was very friendly and the bartender had no problem refilling our water as we attempted to take on the killer.

Overall, I dont know if this really belongs along side so many real beer bars. However, this is something you just have to experience.
Beer+Mexican+Volleyball(and a basketball court)= a truely unique experience.

Not a bad use of an old warehouse. Cavernous ceilings do not lend themselves to a warm intimate pub feeling. Selection is good with changes of seasonals and others. Always nice to find Brooklyn Lager on tap and some local brews from Rohrbach and Custom Brewcrafters.
Still not sure about having to ask for a glass. (Drafts are served in plastic cups). Was told this was for the safety of the volleyball teams.)
Highlight is the beer sampling parties that are held on the 3rd Saturday every month. Be sure to attend one and meet some of the nicest BA friends in town.

After reading johns review I had to take it upon myself to give Raging Burroto a try. Walking in is like walking into a warehouse. The high ceilings offered poor acoustics and caused every voice to echo. But at the same time it was very cool that they have indoor volleyball courts set up. The beer selection wasn't huge, but they do offer a nice selection. From Victory Hop Wallop, to Brooklyn, Rorbach's and quite a few other New York made brews, every beer lover should be happy. The burrito's are great. I had the Jamacan Jerk. It was fantastic. And huge. My only problem was the super long wait.
