Notes/Commercial Description:
This world famous bock from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain is not meant to be rushed, but savoured slowly. As solid as a rock, Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel presides over the evening meal with a colour reminiscent of dark copper with nuances of fiery red. Its clear gleaming look harmonises with its firm, fine pored head.

Also the aroma delights the connoisseur: soft roasted accents and a nuance of dried fruit carrying a vein of caramel. This Doppelbock Dunkel from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain presents a pleasant effervescence. And then there’s the unmistakable flavour: mouthcoating and velvety, strong and yet pleasantly malty – a powerful, robust body. At the same time, it develops an easily recognisable sweetness, embraced in roasted cocoa and a light, bitter hoppiness.

Huge thanks to johnnybravo for hooking me up with 2 bottles of this nectar. Having had this in Nuremberg and finding it to be amazing, I had to get a hold of another bottle or two, if for memory's sake only.

Pours reddish brown with a 1 finger white head that holds up fairly well.

Smells of apple, raisins and caramel/brown sugar malt.

The taste is rich with brown sugar coated apples, raisins, caramel and other, similar fruits. The malt body is very much a brown sugar/caramel combo of flavors. Slight alcohol presence at the end, but nothing out of place.

Mouthfeel is relatively rich (for 7.1%, this has a ton of flavor), with medium, bordering on low, carbonation. Altogether enjoyable for this beer.

Drinkability is very good.

Highly recommended. Nothing may beat my first experience with this beer - sitting in the Andechs beer hall in the gorgeous city of Nuremberg, drinking a couple 1/2 liter steins of this - but yes, this is one fine doppelbock.

Excellent doppelbock! Got to have this while in Germany, served at the Andechs pub in Nurmberg. Wonderful dark brown color with a nice head. Smell was sweet - caramel like. Taste was perfect - nice rich not too sweet caramel malt flavor. Like drinking liquid happiness. Perfect sweetness level. Mouthfeel was also perfect. Very smooth and silky. Medium body - perfect mouthfeel to go along with the great flavor. Drinkability was high for this - perfectly balanced - I went through a full liter probably too quickly. Why does my favorite doppelbock have to be basically impossible to get in the US?

Gosh, is this awesome!

Poured from a 500ml-bottle into my "Maltings-Beer-Festival"-Nonic Pint Glass.

A- Great looking beer, dark amber color, tan head, that lasted quite long, just beautiful.

S- Spicy with roasted malts.

T- Incredibly flavorful and complex, but it requires zipping to get the full spectrum of flavors such as the obvious roastiness, caramel and bread and the clean crispness towards the finish.
Just a slight hint of alcohol in the background.

M- Exceptional mouthfeel, just awesome.

D- Actually pretty high, but it has 7,1% and you will notice these after a few, so be careful, it's a big beer.

I just love this one, it's one of the finest examples for German beers and I would highly recommend trying it out.

500ml bottle. best before 08 10 08. sampled sept 13/08.

pours a nice red-brown, garnet when held to the light, with a small dense off-white head. the head quickly drops to a ring around the glass and leaves a plenty of spotty lace.

aroma is excellent. rich caramel and toffee. loads of dark fruit - date, fig, bit of raisin. the caramel and fruit gives it sort of a candied fruit feel. hint of smoke. bit of biscuit. multi-grain bread. touch of alcohol, but it is mostly hidden.

taste is great. toasted multi-grain bread. caramel and toffee again. still lots of dark fruit too - date, fig, dried craberry, bit of raisin. bit of biscuit. a little more alcohol than in the aroma, but mostly only noticeable as a gentle spreading warmth on the way down. fairly low bitterness level, yet a touch more than i expected. there's a bit of yeasty character too - slightly unexpected considering the clarity.

mouthfeel is good. medium body. medium-low very fine carbonation.

drinkability is great. excellent balance. love all the fruit and caramel. a real treat. thanks again eric!

500mL bottle. Pours a clear chestnut color, capped with a fairly large khaki head. Enticing aroma; roasted malt, grain and hay take the forefront, and are nicely complimented by dark chocolate, molasses, and mild hops. Grain and roasted malt are the dominant flavors, with alcohol, chocolate cake, and dark fruits rounding things out and adding complexity. Fairly long finish, with chocolate and malt lingering on the palate. Very drinkable. The best doppelbock I've ever tasted. World Class.

A - Pours a deep reddish-brown with an inch of firm tan head. This slowly drops to a creamy finger-thick layer. Low carbonation.

S - Dark fruit, molasses, sourdough bread, coffee, toasty nuttiness.

T - Initial mouthful of caramel, with some smokiness creeping through. Ripe dark fruit appears in the middle. Spice and alcohol build towards the finish and into the aftertaste. Bittersweet molasses flavour lingers.

M - Incredibly smooth and creamy. Coating syrupy texture, with medium body and cleaning carbonation.

D - Superb. Surprisingly easy to drink.

17oz. bottle.

Dark copper in color. Crystal clear. Large, creamy, light brown head.

Aroma is very rich and bread-like. Coffee and caramel, which get bigger as the beer warms. Very sweet after 15 minutes or so. Touch of herbal flavor. Fruits - raisins.

Taste follows aroma in that it is fairly sweet to start, but moves even more in that direction as it warms. Coffee, very mild. Herbal notes, also mild. Sweet caramel. Raisins. ABV noticeable, mainly at the finish.

Medium body, lighter than I expected. Low to medium carbonation. Very sweet.

Faithful to style, and quite drinkable. Not a session beer, but you could put a few of these away before the ABV got to you. An excellent beer.

My brother-in-law brought me back a bottle of this from Germany. I told him to pick up anything, and was surprised to see this waiting for me. This pours a brilliant rusty, deep copper body with maroon highlights and perfect clarity. The head was very bountiful and bright white. The aroma is wonderfully fresh with fresh dough and toffee highlights. Hops are very subtle as the maltiness leads the way. The taste is filled with sweet caramels and toffee-like sugars. A slightly metallic sharpness seems to be a product of the hops and crystal malt. Not all that complex, but superbly layered. A coarse finish produced by the hops creates a perfect balance between the insanely smooth body and mouthfeel. As it warms, the sweetness increases and it goes down easier with each sip. Although I am not a huge dopplebock fan, this one is very well done and credit is due. I am glad I had the pleasure to taste this.

A: Pours a mahogany color with a fingers worth of head that fades down to a small cap that lasts for a while

S: Very malty with some sweet caramel and bready notes to go along with toffee, dark fruits, and a light earthiness

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with a light caramel sweetness that is balanced by a nice bready presence and molasses. Dark fruits and toffee come along afterwards, along with a very light estery note from the alcohol

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: One of the top doppelbocks out there for sure. It could use a little more body, but that's the only complaint. It's very easy to drink and is quite complex. Good price at $3.49 for a 500 mL bottle as well. Not easy to find in the states (at least not yet) so get some if you happen upon it

Appearance - translucent mahogany colour with tan head

Smell - Toffee, caramel, hazelnut, soy sauce

Taste - toffee, caramel, hazelnut, hint of soy sauce, mixed nuts

Mouthfeel - medium bodied, high carbonation, sweetness and nuttiness upfront, bitterness in the back end and the finish is toasty and bready

Overall - a very tasty dopplebock that I'm glad made it to the States. Will strive to always have this on hand. Recommended

500ml bottle served in my huge Weihenstephan Weizen glass.

A: Pours a beautiful deep dark amber colour forming a big bubbled and beige head. Good retention but not much lacings left

S: Quite sweet and toffee in the nose and a little bit smoky too. Notes of caramel malts, grapes, brown bread and Lager yeasts

T: Follows the nose, a quite sweet, toffee and molasses upfront. Roasted and caramel malts. Notes of coffee. Brown bread and raisins with a great stingy hoppy bitterness in the end, delicious...

M: Medium body. Quite molasses. Medium carbonation. Very well balanced bittersweet aftertaste

O: High drinkability. One of the best German beers, for sure. Very rich on smell and tte. Not recommended, but mandatory

A nice example of a Doppelbock:

The beer is a nice mahogany in color with some distinct reddish overtones. The head is relatively small for a dark bier but has a slight creaminess to it. The aroma smeels nicely of grain, both fresh and toasted. The taste is very malty, with again, a lot of fresh and toasted grain flavors. These balance nicely with the sweetness. This was my bier of choice at the Kloster in Andechs.

This is a great beer and I didn't even go out looking for it. I happened to see it as I was waiting to check out and I saw doppelbock dunkel hmm that sounds good so I bought one came home and read about it on BA and to my surprise it had rather high rating and after drinking it I would have to agree.

The color is a dark redish black with a strong head at first but slowly dies down. The aroma is not very noticeable but at first sip all thoughts of weakness are thrown out the window. It has a very noticeable doppelbock taste that is not as bitter as german dunkells but is not week due to this. This is definitely a beer that I will be buying more of. I guess as they say good things in life will come to you if you wait and this was no exception.

Served from a 16.9oz (0.5L) bottle into a Guinness 250th anniversary Imperial Pint. Fridge temp.

Grabbed by a coworker for me while he was in Germany.

Appearance- Relatively clear amber/brown with one finger of bubbly white head that didn't last long leaving a pleasant ring around the beer.

Smell- Caramel malts, mild hop earthy aroma, metalicy smells, maybe some dark stone fruit. Not too impressive. Mostly just roasted malts.

Taste- Caramel, toffee, cherry, plum, light roasty coffee, and a heavily roasted malt backbone. On the sweeter side, but not cloying by any means.Perfect example of a Dopplebock. Alcohol is hidden as well.

Mouthfeel- Smooth and rich (but not too viscous) with moderate carbonation. No booze burn at all. Very creamy throughout.

Overall- One of the best Dopplebocks I've had. Truly a fantastic example of the style.

Smooth; not too carbonated, very malty, and at 7.1%, you can drink a couple, and still carry on a cogent conversation. And at a retail price of well under $5 for a Pint, you can buy a couple, and still pay the rent.

Purchased on New Year's Eve at RSVP in Portland, Maine, I'll make this one a frequent purchase in 2014!

A: Pours a dark purple/brown color with a large egg-white head on top, rather foamy. Decent retention that slowly reduces to a thin cap on top. Thin, soapy lacing forms around the entire glass.

S: Sweet aroma with some caramel, dark fruit, plum, raisins, a little bit of chocolate, and brown sugar.

T: Some more dark fruit, dates, plums, and a little raisin. There is some brown sugar, caramel, and toffee, and a little bit of cola. Hint of red apple on the finish.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Incredibly smooth and creamy. No hint of alcohol at all. Slightly dry finish.

O: Very impressed. Great flavor profile and extremely easy drinking. Mouthfeel is superb.

This is a really good Doppelbock with a distinguished taste/smell of dark bread. Very malty wich is pretty common for the style, but not too sweet.

Had this in smaller doses a couple times now so I thought I'd throw up a minimal review since I like it so much.

Pours a light brown with a slight bit of head. The aroma is light and is mostly nuttiness and some musty malt. The flavor is very nutty with a caramel maltiness. It is fairly light and lacking rich complexity, but it is a damn near a perfect session style ale (well, the ABV is a bit too high for that perhaps). If this was imported it would possibly be my "go to" beer for everyday drinking situations. Just so well balanced and zero off-flavors.

A- Dark brown with red hints if seen through light. A medium beige head recedes quickly leaving good lacing

S- Malt sweetness with some caramel/dark fruit hints. A faint smoked feel brings some balance to the sweetness

T- Mostly what the smell suggest. Sweet malt to give a light bready character, some caramel and maybe some clove hints at times. Maybe also some vague hop bitterness in the finish. Quite boring

M- Light for the style, with not enough carbonation in my opinion. Goes down easy without much to be worth remembering

D- Extremely drinkable for its ABV, but not that interesting. Still a beer that i would happily drink if there was nothing better avialable

Overall an enjoyable beer but i'm really suprised with such a high average rating. This beer had no bad flavours, nor bad aromas, nor nothing that may suggest a bad pouring, so i assume there was nothing wrong with mine. Just to make sure i was not wrong will try it again and re-review if necessary

As prosimed, after scoring this beer a c+ i went back to it (november 22 2011) and it is now quite obvious that the on-tap version i had was a bit off. Second try is a 500ml bottle, i'm just pointing out differences between first and second tasting

A- Same colour and all but very much better retention

S- A roasted feel is now more lively, with some toffee hints as well

T- Not as sweet as first tasting. Still some caramel and bready notes, but now much more in balance with a strong chocolate/toffee taste. Some hints of roastiness and dark fruits as well. Kinda reminds of a porter

M- mouthfeel was quite watery on first tasting, now it is not. Dense, creamy body, but still very smooth with just a hint of carbonation

O- Amazing beer. Strong and dense in body and flavour but still as amazingly drinkable and balanced as the best bavarian beers are

500mL (code L3013) into a weizen glass. Pours a beautiful clear rich mahogany w/ a nice soft caramel head, good lacing, lively carbonation.

Aroma is bready and caramelly. Sweet dried fruit, dark toffee malt. Clean and pure.

Taste is caramel sweet and bready, fresh. Nice hard minerally water and just a touch of hoppy spice.

Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, nicely carbonated, crisp with a satisfying aftertaste.

Overall a rock-solid doppelbock, among the best I've had. Glad we can finally get these stateside.

Ancechs Dopplebach Dunkel it by far the best Dopplebock I've ever taster. Brewed in a monastery in Bavaria Germany and sold throughout the region, It's a wonderful bold full bodied beer with a molasses finish. If you ever get the chance to drink one, I highly recommend it. There are not some distributors in the US that are selling this, but I've yet to find it.

Big thanks to RedHaze for hooking me up with this one, I've been trying to get for a while.

Pours a clear dark reddish orange, light brown, thick off white head forms, quickly settles to a medium ring, some lace spots on the glass. Smell is glorious, very bready, yeast, biscuit, caramel, bit of iron, dark fruits, bit of orangey citrus, rich and delicious smelling. Taste is great, brown sugar sweetness, citrus, light floral, then caramel, lots of dark fruit and iron, raisins, maybe a touch of chocolate roastiness, very dry biscuity finish, light bit of spice, very enjoyable. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with low carbonation, bit of warmth but very smooth. Definition of liquid bread, fantastic doppelbock.

Have never had the opportunity to sample this brew so I have no idea what it tastes like fresh, and I was skeptical of a 7% doppelbock holding up well. Boy was my skepticism wrong!

Poured a light brown mahoghany in color w/ a 1 finger creamy tan head, that left nice lacing all over the glass. The nose was of light toffee, caramel, dark fruits, and a touch of bread dough. The taste made the nose seem pretty muted. Deep, rich dark fruits in your face w/ an interesting spiciness in the middle(reminds me almost of a scotch ale), and a finish of breadiness. This brew is really all about the malts. The mouthfeel was medium bodied and lush. I could drink this all night w/ ease! The Germans pride themselves on making great session beers and this higher ABV version is no exception.

Overall, tremendous brew from Andescher! I thought this brew would be hyped simply because it is non-imported, but it is a delightful brew to sip. Basically non-imported + tremendous brew = ISO. Glad I have another bottle.

appearance: dark carmamel brown with some amber highlights, pretty, but no head or lacing, look flat after a few minutes.

smell: wow, lots of sweet bread, caramel, toffee aromas.

taste: definitly a different flavor profile compared to celebrator. lots of dark fruits, very fruity, caramel, maybe some maple, and more sweet. Lots of belgian brown ale flavors.

mouthfeel: medium body, low carbonation

drinkability: This is classic history here. Great dopple, but I rank it a little behind Celebrator and Liberator.

BB 01/04/09, served chilled in a pint-size weizen glass

A: an elegant reddish brown hue comes with a thick and frothy beige-hued head slowly building up with good retention; the carbonation is fine and constant, adding to the elegant appearance.
S: a de...eply sweet caramely and fruity aroma upfront consists of preserved longan-fruits, fat raisins, fat juicy red prunes, dried red-dates, licorice syrup... buttressed by a thick bedrock of caramely and lightly chocolatey malts, melted crystal sugar, while constantly an understated sour tinge true to any decent German lager lurks in the background along with a clean herbal touch of hops. Overall it's almost like a chilled longan-fruit tea with a pinch of brown sugar too much (if you've tried Chinese longan-fruit tea or juice, you'd immediately understand this), but the thick malt sweetness also gets a loyal support from the sour edge of fruits. Integrated and complex.
T: creamy-textured caramel maltiness expands on the tongue, followed by a deeper flavour of exotic black sugar (not "brown" sugar, but the one used in many oriental [read Japanese/Taiwanese] desserts), mild toffee and dark chocolates, preserved black plums, raisins, longan-fruits, and a slightly spicy undertone of hops... all complementing the consistently malty theme that gets a wee bit of gristy-grainy flavour. The finish sees a slightly tannic and bitter palate of hops accompanies the residual sweet dark-fruits and lovely herbal bitter-sweetness of malts, leaving very little undesirable sticky mouthfeel.
M&D: silky smooth and soft on the mouthfeel vis-à-vis a full body and rich flavour profile, while the texture gets slightly "oily" as the beer warms up. Although the sweet fruitiness and caramely characters come a bit overpowering at first, they are quickly balanced off by the complex maltiness in the mid-taste and further softened by the lingering hop bitter-sweetness and a burned undertone in the very end. This second bottle proves more pleasant than my first encounter with this beer three years ago; or, should I say, my palate is better trained now that I can finally appreciate the goodness of such a beautiful nectar?!
