This world famous bock from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain is not meant to be rushed, but savoured slowly. As solid as a rock, Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel presides over the evening meal with a colour reminiscent of dark copper with nuances of fiery red. Its clear gleaming look harmonises with its firm, fine pored head.

Also the aroma delights the connoisseur: soft roasted accents and a nuance of dried fruit carrying a vein of caramel. This Doppelbock Dunkel from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain presents a pleasant effervescence. And then there’s the unmistakable flavour: mouthcoating and velvety, strong and yet pleasantly malty – a powerful, robust body. At the same time, it develops an easily recognisable sweetness, embraced in roasted cocoa and a light, bitter hoppiness.

Concluding with a powerful punch, this Doppelbock departs with a lingering aftertaste of quality plain chocolate. A strong Doppelbock that embodies the centuries old Benedictine brewing tradition, sip by delicious sip.

Appearance - Deep ruby brown colour with a two finger head of foam that has okay retention. This one leaves a lacy ring cover over a sparkling CO2 filled body.

Smell - Sweet brown bread malts dominate first off with pancakes and treacle. The hop presence is mild and leans towards the earthy there is also light touches of fruit in the back and here.

Taste - Very sweet and pleasing fruity front with treacle and the booze coming in later around the middle section. The middle booze section is nice and warming and finally there are some light hop nips that help provide balance.

Mouth feel - Full and creamy body with nice tingle in the body as you drink. Decent warming feeling here as well with a nice drying end.

Overall - This is a wonderful beer and I would recommend it to any one it is nicely balanced although it does lean to the sweet side of things

The head is khaki hued and the body is a clear, coppery, dark brown. The aroma is very rich and doughy, like pungent bread crust; there's some dark dried fruit and perhaps a little mocha. First up in the flavor is a wave of rich, bready malt which is moderately sweet; there's some rum raisin, just a little alcohol, and then grainy caramel in the finish. The mouth feel gets a little dry and sticky in the back end; it has a medium-full body and nice, fine carbonation.

Overall, a very drinkable doppelbock, not too boozy and loaded with bready malt, but varied with zesty dried fruit flavors. It's rich, flavorful, lovely in appearance, and not too intense. Love the aroma—very reminiscent of molasses (Swedish rye) bread or shoo-fly cake.

Nice. Pours nice with a slight tan head that settles quickly. First thing I noticed was the taste of caramel and a hint of fruit. Overall a very nice beer and will keep it on my list of regulars.

Suppose I could write up some big, stupid review in the style of Ozymandias, bemoaning the essential ephemerality of beer-geek grandeur, basking in this fallen brew as a mean of stress how the most mighty of us shall fall. As much press as you used to get, the ticks, man. The ticks gonna take you down.

This has been on my Want list since the Want list was a thing. This was in the BA top 50 for most of the early to mid aughts, and it's still held in very high regard by people who care about German beer (who are mostly old and very crotchety and spend their days locked away in their garages homebrewing ESB's). I found it just sitting on a shelf, like it was nothing. Pretty reasonably priced, too.

Pours a very dark amber with the fleeting head that's typical for the style. Smells very sweet and toasty, with big nodes of raisins and caramel. The closest reference I can make is Spaten's so-so Optimator, but this avoids the sticky sweet syrup nodes that make that beer a bit too intense. This aroma is very, very sweet, but still contains enough zippy bockmalt to avoid resembling a type of industrial sweetener.

Tastes like it smells: intense, quite malty and sweet, pulling back just milliseconds before the whole thing would become too intense. Toasty malt starts things off, ripping quickly into a middle of bockmalt, raisins, butter caramels, and old sweetened bread. It's intense and interesting throughout, and it avoids evoking the scene in _Gravity's Rainbow_ where Slothrop nearly pukes while being subjected to British candies. For whatever reason, American pallets can handle intense foreign flavors only so long as they are savory. That's why the desert cart at Indian restaurants stays stocked even while the rest is picked clean. I'll eat any of the savory shit without question, but good god--you ever have that candied carrot pudding stuff they put out for desert. There was so much sugar in it that one bite nearly gave me a seizure.

Uhh, okay we're going off the rails, here. Point is, even though I am what doctors call an "Advanced Drinker," I still worry that I haven't develop my pallet for doppelbocks. This seems exquisitely brewed if only because I can easily appreciate its intensity. It's not exactly my cup of tea--I still prefer the stoutier DBs like Celebrator--but I can still give them a hand for brewing it so well.

500ml bottle poured into a slender lager glass.

A: Dark caramel color with reddish hues. Perfect clarity. Fine-bubbles off-white head retains very well in the narrow glass. A thick blanket of lacing coats the glass surface.

S: Brown molasses, brown bread, toasty grain, treacle syrup, pinch of cocoa, golden raisin. Traces of hay and grass. Mild brush of alcohol.

T: Bread crust, nutty, cocoa. Toasty grain and hay. Rich treacle syrup and brown molasses. Grape skin. Dried dates and prunes. Grass and herbal hop spice kick up a bit more on the back end and bring some balance. Faint brush of alcohol. Treacle, molasses, and nutty flavors on the finish.

M: Thick and rich body. Coating and a bit syrupy, but some fine and prickling carbonation lifts it away. Slick and almost silky. Mild alcohol warmth.

O: This is about as good as it can possibly get in the world of Doppelbocks. It brings a rich malty complexity that few others can hope to match, and maintains easy drink ability throughout the session.

Looks and smells great-dark brown, clear, with a bubbly tan head. Nose is caramel, brown sugar, dates, figs. I also get a light smokey note, very subtle.

The taste, and more so the feel, are a disappointment. Maybe I (or the distributor) let this sit too long, but it was damn near flat. The body was decent despite this, but it was hard to get by. The flavor, which mostly mimicked the nose, was perhaps a tad too sweet, but dark fruit and brown sugar seemed close to the right profile for this malty beer.

My hopes is I will revisit this once to see if the feel was an anomaly. Given the ratings it seems like it deserves another shot.

This is an amazing beer... Went to the liquor store to peruse in addition to reserving a keg for a grad party, and this caught my eye for some reason.

I love doppelbocks as a style generally, but this one really nails it. I try not to read BA reviews before forming my own opinion and didn't in this case... I literally logged in to see how highly it would be rated, as I knew I had discovered something truly amazing from the Motherland.

Crisp, clean caramel and bread-y notes complemented by a superior mouthfeel make this a 95 (or better!) for sure. Wish I had another...

12 oz bottle, poured into a tankard at ~40 degrees F.

Appearance: Pours a clear amber-brown, and forms a thick, fluffy light tan head with excellent retention. Lacing is somewhat insane.

Smell: Sticky buns with raisins throughout, fresh from the oven and just finished glazing, all bread and sweetness and fruit.

Taste: Sweetness is the primary characteristic, and it is present in abundance, from the first moments of the sip all the way to the finish. The sweetness is definitely bready as well, alongside a sort of coppery, metallic twang. There's a not insignificant amount of noble hops in this beer, which lends a slightly medicinal taste to the sweetness, and an oddly bitter finish and aftertaste for a doppelbock. I get no fruit or nut aspects from the flavor, possibly due to the hop factor.

Mouthfeel: This beer doesn't exactly deliver the sort of thick, creamy, sticky mouthfeel I associate with a doppelbock, instead drinking more like a bock.

Overall: Being perfectly honest, this isn't my favorite doppelbock, nor do I classify it in the same tier as Korbinian and Celebrator. This drinks more like a maibock, and it'd be a pretty darned good one.

Dark, reddish brown body; dense, luscious, lasting head. Big roasted grain aroma; dark fruit sweetness, raisins. Caramel and brown sugar sweetness; well-balanced bitterness and a touch of booziness. Heavy body yet delicately smooth on the palate; velvety; warm.

There is nothing like a well-done example of a classic beer style, and this German offering does an exceptional job of delivering the goods.

Been awhile since I put in a 5.0 but this is as good as it gets for a doppel and for a beer in general. Huge sweet bready characteristics reminding of fresh baked honey bread drizzled with a brown sugar and raisin compote. Caramel, maple, molasses, dark fruits. A malt lovers dream. Body and weight are kept in check and this drinks almost like a regular bock but with much more flavor.

The best there is and probably the one beer I would take to a deserted island. It would certainly be in my six pack to bring. I would rate as one of my top 5 beer of all-time maybe #1

500ml bottle $4.49 and poured into a pilsner glass. I'd heard about this beer for years and so I was excited to grab a bottle now that it is distributed in Denver. It's good enough that I've gone back for three more bottles. Dark amber color, almost brown with a small sheen of foam on the top. Aroma has the faintest touch of chocolate, nutty and fruity. The flavor is sweet, fruity, slightly bready. Overall this is quite a nice dunkel.

Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel has a fairly thick, creamy, cream-colored head, a mostly clear, dark-brown, bubbly appearance, with low-to-moderate lacing left on the glass. The aroma is of rich, sweet, syrupy, brown bread crust, raisin, spiced bread, raisin bread, and brown sugar. Taste is of the same elements, riding alongside moderate hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, and Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel finishes somewhat crisp, surprisingly drinkable, and exquisite.

one of the top beers in germany, according to this sight, and i have to admit, its taken me awhile to fine one, and i may have been blinded slightly by the hype, but as i sit down to this frothing glass of crystal clear but super dark brown brew that is kriek cherry red in bright light, do i realize and appreciate just how good this is. sometimes i think we lose track of traditional styles, and how good the good ones are, people dont rave about dopplebock, it doesnt have pounds of dry hops, bacteria, or bourbon barrels, so it slips under the radar, and that is unfortunate because it is deserving of far higher praise. as that style goes, this one is one of the better going. beautiful caramelized barley sugars here in nose and taste, and ancient yeast strain, and a pleasing softness. its so simple but yet so deep, like a well made bread pudding, save some of the residual sugar. feels like the one that is most often copied. its hard to call it as nuanced as some of the crazy wilds out there, but its quality is through the roof. amazing its a lager, i often think that with dopplebock, but especially here, there is so much yeast flavor. affordable world class german beer has the weird distinction of being shelf turd material here in colorado. i hate that, because this is what beer should be, and beer economy, but i can only imagine this fresh on tap at the source. oh baby!

Excellent beer. I first had it in D.C's Churchkey and it knocked my socks off. Excellent sweetness to counter the dark chocolate-like bitterness. Overall really well balanced. You almost expect it to be darker and more viscous than it is. If you're a fan of Samual Smith's Oatmeal Stout then you might be a fan of this too (they definitely aren't identical of course, just same kind of sweetness and balance from a darker beer).

a: dark cherry in color held up to the light. Thick but not hazy. One and a half finger off white head that dissipates quickly. Limited and delicate lacing.

s: mo' f'in 'lasses. Toasted grains. Faint coffee.

t: More molasses, coffee, toasted grains, vegetal finish...as in root vegetables roasted with a meat.

mf: Smooth and slippery up front. Slight peppery carbonation at the finish. Very delicate for something so heavy.

o: This beer is focused. It certainly knows what it wants to be and is just that. A solid doppelbock.

Served chilled in an imperial pint glass, it has a dark redish brown hue with good clarity and thin white head. The head settles to a skim layer that sticks around.

Aroma is mild and sweet with toasted nuts and brown bread characteristics.

Flavor is exceptionally complex and balanced. It has the richness of a sweet baked bread and dark caramel sauce. It has a hint of hop bitterness. The yeast gives it depth and character.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and perfectly carbonated.

Overall a fantastic example of the style and well worth the wait.

Been a long time coming: my nephew's favorite brewery is finally available in Florida.

A lovely ruby color with a tan head that reduces to a ring in my half-liter glass.

Lovely sweet aroma of caramel.

Fantastic flavor. Sweet and caramel with that classic grape-like doppelbock hit. All malt, of course.

Surprisingly carbonated body, with the bubbles popping spiritedly in my mouth.

Overall an outstanding brew.

From a 500 ml bottle (date code says L1754) into a snifter.

A-The beer is a pretty garnet/ruby color. It is quite dark, but the liquid is clear and you can see through it in the light. The head starts out at nearly two fingers tall, but quickly fades to sheen on top. Foam is mocha colored. Not much carbonation and no lacing.

S-The aroma is a delicious mixture of sweet, dried and candied fruit. I smell plum and golden raisin, in particular, as well as brown sugar, a bit of earthy roasted barley, some cocoa powder, and a slight whiff of warming alcohol spiciness. Awesome.

T-The taste doesn't disappoint. There is a ton of malty, sweet fruit. Plum, raisin, and prune come to mind. I also get notes of brown sugar, toast, chocolate, and just a bit of roasted barley grain. The finish leaves my palate with a warm kiss of alcohol spice and earthy tobacco.

M-The feel is medium to full in body and slightly sticky. Carbonation is smooth.

O-Wow, what an awesome beer. This thing really blows me away. I have always enjoyed doppelbocks, but this is a whole new level of complexity, balance, and flavor. If you want hops, go elsewhere, but if you want a delicious, full-body winter beer, you will have to work hard to do better than this.

THE doppelbock in my book, with an incredible caramel-chocolate flavor profile. It teeters on the edge of getting too sweet, but an earthiness, ostensibly from the hops, reins it all in. Truly delightful and one that holds up surprisingly well, as I've had bottles a good year and a half from filling that were still in good condition.

Picked up at a bottle shop in San Fran, might have been old because while it looked and smelled okay, the taste was just off, and certainly not worthy of the praise this one typically gets. Would be willing to try again though.

A really nice beer.

Beautiful brown & cherry color. Good fine head.

Taste is malty, a little sweet on the approach, hint of sweetness on the nose as well. Complex. On the palate it resembles a porter, actually.

Some mocha on the finish, long subtle bitterness. Not Celebrator, not by a mile, but still a beer that the maker should be proud of.

A. Real nice dark brown with a copper hue. Small cream colored head. Very inviting.
S. Dark fruit, caramel, hint of chocolate
T. Dark fruit early and closes with a little chocolate. Could maybe use a little more malty and nutty flavor. Dark fruit comes out more as warms.
M. Light carbonation and very smooth.
O. Really good dopplebock. I would prefer a little less of the dark fruit and more roasted malt. Still very good but Ayinger Dopplebock still my go to.
