Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: BeerAdvocate on 06-03-2002

This dark Weissbier retains its aromatic character thanks to the select choice of Hallertau aroma hops and highest quality Bavarian wheat and dark barley malts.

Its characteristic, distinctive maroon colour is a feast for the eyes. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. The perfect complement is provided by the very creamy, fine pored head. This dark Weissbier from the Holy Mountain will delight connoisseurs with a harmonious interplay of fruity odours, above all ripe bananas and pineapple, with undertones of caramel and cocoa.

Andechser Weissbier Dunkel teases the tongue with a delicate tanginess carried by a round, soft body. A light caramel sweetness harmonises well with the fine hoppy bitterness. It concludes on a soft and refreshing note.

Dark brown and almost opaque. Impressive head with good retention and lace formation. Ripe banana hits first on the nose. More like banana bread actually. Floral hoppiness. Toffee malt profile. Not much depth of aroma but what's there is nice.

Light in flavor profile, malt-forward but well-balanced by bitterness. Banana and clove notes. Nice malty sweetness. Prickly carbonation that takes a while to settle down. Good flavor for only a 5% ABV beer. This is a solid, if unspectacular dark wheat. (498 characters)

Thanks to blutt59 for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours an amber color with a white head. The aroma is dark fruit, yeast and caramel. The flavor is similar with dark fruit, caramel, toffee, yeast, bananas and cloves. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very good dunkelweizen from a very good brewery. (311 characters)

We need to import more of these Bavarian banana bombs over here. This one has aroma of fresh baked banana bread and a rich ripe fruit and caramel taste to match. Unfiltered and dark with more ester flavor than most of the other German imports typically available. Exceptionally smooth with a slight tart finish. (312 characters)

Bottle shared by Joe - much obliged!

Pours a hazy light brown color with a 1.5-finger tan head. The head recedes slowly into a thin layer on top leaving thick lacing.

Smells of caramel malts overloaded with bruised banana and various spices. As the beer warms the sweetness in the aroma subsides just a bit.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Smooth caramel malt flavors kick things off and are almost immediately overtaken by strong spices - clove mostly with hints of nutmeg and brown sugar. Midway through the sip hints of banana flavors work their way into things before they fade out into mildly earthy hops. The hop, malt, and spices carry through to a crisp and mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a smooth thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is also very good. I finished my glass quickly and could have a few more.

Overall neither the aroma nor the flavors blew me away with this beer although both were very solid. Everything else was solidly above average making this beer well worth a shot. (1,037 characters)

An excellent little wheat dunkle, very smooth, nice chocolatey banana flavour, and even though its dark i thought it was even refreshing, excellent stuff. (154 characters)

Powerful aroma of mixed spices fruit, yeast and sweetness...deep rich colour, all matched to the taste...deep, rich, fruity, real depth of character, though the powerful tastes do not encourage it as a session beer, maybe a bit too sweet for that in my opinion, but - as always with Andechs - a wonderful beer not to be missed.

Served in improper glassware, a snifter, but that's all I've got available.

Wondrous head, chewy and foamy, oatmeal-colored and persistent. Lace is plentiful. The body is surprisingly dark, almost pitch-black. I guess I was expecting something more dark brown. Either way, it's elegant. 5

Aromas of dark bread, rye, toast and caramel all occur to me. Molasses becomes more noticeable with a few more passes of the nose. 4.25

Think raisin bran without the raisins and that's about right for the taste. Very cereal-like with a touch of sweet molasses. Clove and banana become more noticeable as the beer warms and linger on the finish. 3.5

Lighter in the body than I was expecting, but also lighter in carbonation, so the feel here is decent. I'd probably like a bit more body, but you have to appreciate how easily this brew drinks. The finish is grainy and again leaves a feel in the mouth like cereal, which makes it feel quite hearty. 3.75

Not as lovely as their Helles and not at the level of Weihenstephaner, but this brew is plenty enjoyable. (1,052 characters)

Pours a finger and half of head on a cloudy light brown colored body.
The aroma is wet grain, light caramel and slight chocolate.
The taste is amazing: caramel, toasted malt, plum and a little banana. Excellent balance.
The texture is smooth and soft with a nice fizzy.
The taste and texture are both outstanding. (313 characters)

Poured from a brown 16.9 oz. bottle. Has a very dark brown color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of some bananas, light wheat. Taste is mild, banana, a bit of wheat, good but kind of mild, not much spice. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good, easy drinking beer. (284 characters)

Poured from a 0.5 L bottle into a flared pilsner glass. Moderate hand. No clear date identified on the label.

A: Cloudy, toffee-brown with reddish tint. 2 fingers of slightly rocky, off-white head. Ok retention. Light lacing.

S: Banana & darker fruit. Spice, clove. Sweet bread. Chocolate and toffee are revealed as it warms. Pretty nice.

T: Lightly sweet, fruity and spicy up front. Fades into roasted malt notes. A very light touch of hops. Weiss flavors - spice, banana, bubble gum - reappear in the aftertaste. No alcohol.

M: Moderate carbonation that is a tad prickly at first, but then slightly creamy. Moderate to light body and somewhat less full than I was expecting.

O: Solid dunkelweizen with a nice blending of wheat flavors and roasted malts. Good quality, but a bit lighter than some others in the style.

Poured on tap into a tall wheat ale glass at Churchkey DC.

What an amazing looking beer. I felt like I just got served a candy bar. The perfect milk chocolate brown body, with a super creamy light cocoa tan whipped up one finger top presented. Lots of staying power and retention. Fantastic looking.

Bouquet is classic magic and powerful. The beer rips like a banana split. Milky chocolate and banana, with a nice syrup like sensing smell. Warming clove and brown spices with a hint of toasty qualities. It smells amazing.

Palate just explodes on first sip. Sticky toffee, with a crisp light feel. Popping carbonation and milk chocolate almost like penny candy and pop rocks. Fruity banana esters and a quality hop and clove like sensing finish on the swallow. Very light palate but more than enough flavor and makes for easy drinking.

I finished this beer in no time flat. This is not by any stretch one of my favorite styles, but this beer is probably my benchmark now for the style. It is flat out incredible. (1,016 characters)
