Notes/Commercial Description:
This dark Weissbier retains its aromatic character thanks to the select choice of Hallertau aroma hops and highest quality Bavarian wheat and dark barley malts.

Its characteristic, distinctive maroon colour is a feast for the eyes. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. The perfect complement is provided by the very creamy, fine pored head. This dark Weissbier from the Holy Mountain will delight connoisseurs with a harmonious interplay of fruity odours, above all ripe bananas and pineapple, with undertones of caramel and cocoa.

Andechser Weissbier Dunkel teases the tongue with a delicate tanginess carried by a round, soft body. A light caramel sweetness harmonises well with the fine hoppy bitterness. It concludes on a soft and refreshing note.

The beer poured a light chocolate brown color with a 4+ f head in a Weizen glass.
Immediate clove and spice aroma wafting from the glass.

The mouth feel is moderately carbonated.

The taste is strong clove with a lemon aftertaste, and perhaps chocolate.
This beer is different than other Dunkeweizens than I have tasted:
The clove is more piquant- but not overwhelming.

The beer is well balanced. Although the body is slightly more watery than other Dunkelweizens.
it is quite enjoyable.

A classic taste from an old brewery.

500 ml bottle, bought in Germany. ABV is 5.0%. Cloudy dark brown colour, enormous thick and creamy light tan head. Lovely aroma of brown bread, yeast, cloves, banana and caramel. Flavour has malts, caramel, chocolate and cloves, some hops in the fairly dry finish. I had it on its own, must be good with food too. A very fine dunkelweizen.

The beer has a thick head, almost like Guinness from the tap. The beer is very dark, almost black. I could smell cloves and a hint of malt. The initial taste was that of cloves and banana bread, and the aftertaste had a roasted malt character to it. As I drank more of the beer, I noticed more of a chocolate taste.

My first Andechs beer.Pours into a weizen glass a chestnut brown with a large blooming tan head atop.Roasted bananas in the nose along with clove and chocolate.Bananas are big on the palate with a bit of nuttiness and chocolate, the phenols are not in your face.Wow a great dunkel weiss here flavor packed but subtle.

Pours a finger and half of head on a cloudy light brown colored body.
The aroma is wet grain, light caramel and slight chocolate.
The taste is amazing: caramel, toasted malt, plum and a little banana. Excellent balance.
The texture is smooth and soft with a nice fizzy.
The taste and texture are both outstanding.

Bottle shared by Joe - much obliged!

Pours a hazy light brown color with a 1.5-finger tan head. The head recedes slowly into a thin layer on top leaving thick lacing.

Smells of caramel malts overloaded with bruised banana and various spices. As the beer warms the sweetness in the aroma subsides just a bit.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Smooth caramel malt flavors kick things off and are almost immediately overtaken by strong spices - clove mostly with hints of nutmeg and brown sugar. Midway through the sip hints of banana flavors work their way into things before they fade out into mildly earthy hops. The hop, malt, and spices carry through to a crisp and mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a smooth thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is also very good. I finished my glass quickly and could have a few more.

Overall neither the aroma nor the flavors blew me away with this beer although both were very solid. Everything else was solidly above average making this beer well worth a shot.

Bottle from World Wide Spirits

Poured into a Weihenstephaner weizen glass

Kloster Andechs' dunkelweizen is a solidly constructed beer, built upon noticeable toasted wheat and roasted malt. These ingredients yield a true-to-form dunkelweizen that has a unique, though subtle, nutty and roasted component that other dunkels choose not to feature. A high quality dunkel that should stand alongside Ayinger and Weihenstephaner (just wish it were available in the US).

Pours a huge, tan-brown head of small and medium-sized bubbles, takes ages for this to recede, leaving about a centimeter cap atop the beer and some good lacing. Body is chocolate brown, with lighter brown around the edges; in light, it has a faint orange tint as well. Totally opaque from yeast sediment, as it should be, but carbonation is still readily visible along the sides of the glass.

Aroma of classic weizens: yeast, bananas, sliced apples, wheat bread, a bit of roasted malt character, spicy phenols. All components are fairly well balanced with each other, so this smells good, but I think the aroma could be a bit stronger and still benefit.

The taste opens with modest wheat and barley malt sweetness joined to some soft roasted malt yielding very subdued nut and chocolate flavors. Sliding down to mid-palate, there's a relative explosion of sweet and delicious flavors: tart wheat malt twang, yeast, bananas, sliced apples, and mild phenols. Back of palate continues with the fruity esters from the yeast and wheat malt, adding a bit more tartness. Lingering aftertaste of toasted bread and nuts (walnuts, hazelnuts).

Body is medium to medium-light, with just a bit of wateriness around the edges. Carbonation is present, but light and effervescent, allowing the beer to feel fairly crisp, and yet foam up a bit on the palate as it travels along. Finish is dry. Generally very drinkable.

A - Very dark chestnut brown with some ruby hues. About average sized rocky, foamy, light beige head. Disappears fairly fast with no lacing left, but a lot of bubbles.

S - A lot of banana and caramel malt. Very much like a banana bread. Fair amount of bubblegum as well. Some clove and citrus along with a touch of other fruitiness. Nice typical dunkelweizen aroma.

T - Similar to the nose. Strong banana and caramel flavor with some nutty flavor. Similar to a banana bread. Some clove taste as well. Some fruit apart from the banana gives it a bit of a fruitcake taste as well. The flavors are a bit on the thin side, but they are enjoyable.

M - Medium to light body, with it being a bit more on the light side, with a bit above average carbonation. Pretty fizzy feel.

D - Really easy to drink beer. With pretty typical dunkelweizen flavors. None of the flavors are too strong or overpower the palate, but it has a good amount of flavor.

Notes: Best before 29/09/10. Overall a nice dunkelweizen. WEll balanced and flavorful, all though it was a bit thin. It didn't blow me away, but was a solid beer.

Bright chestnut with loose, rocky beige foam.
Banana bread on the nose with more than a bit of phenol bite, plus woody spice underneath.
Cola, nutmeg, brown soda loaf up front, some clove, walnut oil and natural licorice in the middle plus bubblegum yeast, with mild winter spice hops.
Praline finish and creme caramel linger.
Light, fizzy, clean, creamy.

Surprising complexity from the malts - carob in there, too - switching smoothly from sweet to sharply spicy to nutty. Body manages to be both light and lively (high carb) but luscious as well (some residual sugars.) Shows brightness doesn't have to all be about hops.

Top dark wheat and great autumn beer.

Had this on tap while in Germany at the Wiesbaden Rathaus. Based on the low scores from bottle reviews, I'd say you definitely need to try this fresh from the tap - pretty good stuff really.

A nice dark weizen with banana bread and clove aroma with some malty dark fruits.

The taste was much the same and the mouthfeel was very smooth and creamy. Very drinkable.

I wish I could have tried all the Andechser beers at this place but unfortunately could only get through three. Next time...

500ml bottle into Franziskaner Weissbier glass. Thanks a ton Ayn!

A: Pours a clear cola brown with a huge, billowing and frothy dark tan head that took forever to fade into a thick film that left streaky lace down the glass.
S: Rich and lightly sweet notes of whole grain wheat bread, toasted caramel, bananas foster, and brown sugar. Not cloying or synthetic smelling in the slightest.
T: Follows the nose with sweet and ripe banana hitting first followed by caramel, crème brulee, and dark roasted malts. Slight hints of toast, tobacco, leather and dark fruits come through as well. The finish is bready and malt heavy, and the aftertaste is lightly sweet with notes of lingering banana and brown sugar. M: Mouthfeel is slicker and more watery than expected, with a fairly light body, and very low carbonation. Smooth overall, but a bit thin.
O: Like dark bread, banana bread and bananas foster all in one. Very delicious, but a touch thin.

Poured from a 16.9oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a medium brown color, with a large dense off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains wheat, bananas, caramelized malts and some hops.

T: The taste starts out bready with flavors of wheat and a hearty malt character. Then some mildly sweet flavors of caramel, bananas and chocolate come in. The hops presence is mild but very complementary creating a very good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready.

M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, very good representation of style, this is a nice beer to drink for a long time if you’re in the mood for the style.

Poured from a 0.5 L bottle into a flared pilsner glass. Moderate hand. No clear date identified on the label.

A: Cloudy, toffee-brown with reddish tint. 2 fingers of slightly rocky, off-white head. Ok retention. Light lacing.

S: Banana & darker fruit. Spice, clove. Sweet bread. Chocolate and toffee are revealed as it warms. Pretty nice.

T: Lightly sweet, fruity and spicy up front. Fades into roasted malt notes. A very light touch of hops. Weiss flavors - spice, banana, bubble gum - reappear in the aftertaste. No alcohol.

M: Moderate carbonation that is a tad prickly at first, but then slightly creamy. Moderate to light body and somewhat less full than I was expecting.

O: Solid dunkelweizen with a nice blending of wheat flavors and roasted malts. Good quality, but a bit lighter than some others in the style.

Prost!

A: Poured into a Hofbrau Munchen stein. Murky mahogany brown. Suspended yeast sediment. 2 finger frothy and foamy head settles quickly to creamier film.

S: Lots of clove and banana. Moderate wheat and bread notes. Low bubblegum scent. Roasted caramel malt.

M: Creamy but light bodied. Soft and fluffy. Medium carbonation dries it up.

T: Plain and simple, like a slice of chocolate chip banana bread. Light twang of bubblegum, toffee, brown sugar, walnuts, cracked wheat, and hop spice. This beer is just as good in summer with its light body as it is in the winter months with its comforting flavor.

500mL into a weizen glass. Pours a clear cola brown w/ a nice creamy mocha head, good carbonation.

Aroma is mellow banana and clove, some other spices.

Taste is overripe (brown) banana and winter spices. Clean and crisp, just a hint of grain. Good clean water.

Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, really nicely balanced.

Overall, yes. This is a very nice beer. Simple and elegant.
