Notes/Commercial Description:
This dark Weissbier retains its aromatic character thanks to the select choice of Hallertau aroma hops and highest quality Bavarian wheat and dark barley malts.

Its characteristic, distinctive maroon colour is a feast for the eyes. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. The perfect complement is provided by the very creamy, fine pored head. This dark Weissbier from the Holy Mountain will delight connoisseurs with a harmonious interplay of fruity odours, above all ripe bananas and pineapple, with undertones of caramel and cocoa.

Andechser Weissbier Dunkel teases the tongue with a delicate tanginess carried by a round, soft body. A light caramel sweetness harmonises well with the fine hoppy bitterness. It concludes on a soft and refreshing note.

A - Beautiful pure white head, completely opaque brown body.
S - Light pastry and brown sugar aromas
T - Very light malt, tired bitterness
MF - Mild carbonation, silky yet slightly acidic(?)
D - A beer this plain from Andechs? A big surprise for me. I had a bottle fo this and was underwhelmed, so I kept my notes, waited a couple days and rereviewed with consistent notes.

I don't really know what I think about this beer. I guess I just expected more from Andechs on this one. A very dark opaque body, almost black, with a lasting thick bubbly head on top (not exuberantly foamy though). The smell was kinda weak, showing some light bready notes and hints of the traditional weizen styles, with a lot more emphasis on caramel. The taste too, was very caramely for a dunkel weizen, toasted and lamost burnt. The classic bready weizen thing was almost hidden. Mouthfeel was round, but the brew overall lacked of balanced, not fitting right into its style. Not bad, but just nothing in comparison with their doppelbock.

Appearance: was quit dark with a rich bubbly head

Aroma: chocolaty and and sweet with a slight hint of smoke

Taste: A chocolaty hit at first with a nice light hit of hops at the end, runs through a small gambet of flavor yet you can not call this beer dynamic

Mouthfeel: Slight to weak yet still has a little body so not a total loss

Overall: A good beer but not a great beer worth the drink but nothing to write home about

Brown, with reddish edges. High carbonation.
Light brown colored foam, quite creamy. Some bubbles on the sides.
Classic weizen smell, with a full banana, mostly in the beginning. Then light burnt notes, and cloves.
All that on a good malty base. All resolute and intense.
Malt at the taste, some biscuit, then the same notes of the smell. The smell is maybe a bit better.
Average body. Notes of malt and toffee. Round.
Quite short aftertaste.

smell is quite rich, with a malty dominance (roasted notes) ...
taste however is not very rich, rather watery, with hints of smoked sausage and caramel, a tip bitterness in the aftertaste ...

this is not a typical Weissbier, in a blind tasting I perhaps would rather have thought of a Rauchbier (although not as rich as Schlenkerla) ... interesting, but not necessarily something I would buy regularly

Brown 0.5 litre bottle, best before 2nd Jan 2009, drank Sep 2008.

Andechs gets such good press, I am struggling to argee with all the hype surrounding their beers, this is the second I've found wanting (out of three I've reviewed).

This is an average dark wiessbier at best and I thought it almost boring at times.

It is a dark, deep brown colour and a good creamy tan coloured head sat on top, it looked both interesting and inviting.

The aroma was of a weak caramel type smell, with a hint of fruitcake.

The taste was more fizz than flavour, the caramel from the aroma was there, but the fruitcake had gone somewhere and it didn't have a rich, intense feel to it at all.

Not what I was expecting, a big disappointment to be honest.

Got this at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam.

From a bottle into a weizen glass.

APPEARANCE: Relatively small two finger medium-thin off white head. Head dissipates into a thin film, which disappears itself rather quickly. Minimal carbonation evident. A nice deep dark red colour, perhaps rust or burnt umber. Minimal to no lacing. The nice colour saved this one.

SMELL: Scent of wheat malt, bananas and lemons. Some sweet caramel malt in the back as well, but unfortunately the scent is not strong enough to make a statement. Nice, but not powerful enough to make it really stand out like it wants to.

TASTE: A bit of wheat malt but that's it. Nothing much else to talk about. The only thing that comes up is an odd strong sweet malt tinge at the very end, long after the beer has gone down. This is a bit too strong and is slightly unpleasant. Could definitely be better.

PALATE: Thinner body and medium carbonation. A bit more carbonation on the palate than the look would suggest. Goes down smooth and finishes relatively dry. A tiny little bite at the very back of the throat after it's gone down, which was a unique and welcome touch to what was otherwise a pretty average experience.

OVERALL: Definitely a disappointment. There was just nothing much to this, and what was there wasn't all that great. The scent, beautiful colour, and the little bite at the end were nice, but this one just didn't have the complete package. Won't be looking for it again.
