Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: BeerAdvocate on 06-03-2002

This dark Weissbier retains its aromatic character thanks to the select choice of Hallertau aroma hops and highest quality Bavarian wheat and dark barley malts.

Its characteristic, distinctive maroon colour is a feast for the eyes. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. The perfect complement is provided by the very creamy, fine pored head. This dark Weissbier from the Holy Mountain will delight connoisseurs with a harmonious interplay of fruity odours, above all ripe bananas and pineapple, with undertones of caramel and cocoa.

Andechser Weissbier Dunkel teases the tongue with a delicate tanginess carried by a round, soft body. A light caramel sweetness harmonises well with the fine hoppy bitterness. It concludes on a soft and refreshing note.

Pours murky medium brown with a rocky tan foam head. I wish this one would grow a bigger thicker head. I slight disappointment, but a minor one.

Yeast, banana, some clove, a little bubblegum and some toasted aromas.

Tasty and refreshing, big fruit up front, with some sweet wheat and grain. As the palate clears you get some of that dark wheat toast and some bitterness to set the balance right. A little banana/fruit and yeasty wheat in the end too.

Lighter bodied, well carbonated.

Very nice. An under-appreciated style and one that is very well done here. Nice complexity and balance here, with an underlying richness that you appreciate as you drink. Bought one bottle, could easily drink another right now.

Tight, beige head that starts more than four fingers thick. Recedes very slowly leaving a foam dome and plenty of stringy lace on the glass. Deep brown liquid. Appears to be quite clear in front of a bright light.

Smells like chalky chocolate milk. Light alcohol in the background. I get notes of black cherry, raw bread dough and raisin.

Mild, darker malt taste of toast and raw grains. The swallow has a hop presence, but the stronger flavor is of the wheat. Brief sour aftertaste. Thin bodied with a sizable carbonation level.

The beer poured a light chocolate brown color with a 4+ f head in a Weizen glass.
Immediate clove and spice aroma wafting from the glass.

The mouth feel is moderately carbonated.

The taste is strong clove with a lemon aftertaste, and perhaps chocolate.
This beer is different than other Dunkeweizens than I have tasted:
The clove is more piquant- but not overwhelming.

The beer is well balanced. Although the body is slightly more watery than other Dunkelweizens.
it is quite enjoyable.

A classic taste from an old brewery.

Bright chestnut with loose, rocky beige foam.
Banana bread on the nose with more than a bit of phenol bite, plus woody spice underneath.
Cola, nutmeg, brown soda loaf up front, some clove, walnut oil and natural licorice in the middle plus bubblegum yeast, with mild winter spice hops.
Praline finish and creme caramel linger.
Light, fizzy, clean, creamy.

Surprising complexity from the malts - carob in there, too - switching smoothly from sweet to sharply spicy to nutty. Body manages to be both light and lively (high carb) but luscious as well (some residual sugars.) Shows brightness doesn't have to all be about hops.

Top dark wheat and great autumn beer.

Had this on 2013-10-18 in Columbia, PA

A - Dark caramel with a 2-finger dark tan, pillowy head that fades quickly to 1/2-finger and leaves mild lacing.

S - Banana, sharp clove, yeasty bread.

T - Toasted dark bread, mild banana, clove, cocoa, subdued hops that provide a touch of spice and moderating bitterness. Dries pretty quickly with a bit of lingering malt sweetness and clove.

M - Light-medium body and medium carbonation. A little creamy at first but the carbonation scrubs that away quickly making this an easy to drink, refreshing beer.

O - A very fine dunkel. Right up there with the best.

Poured on tap into a tall wheat ale glass at Churchkey DC.

What an amazing looking beer. I felt like I just got served a candy bar. The perfect milk chocolate brown body, with a super creamy light cocoa tan whipped up one finger top presented. Lots of staying power and retention. Fantastic looking.

Bouquet is classic magic and powerful. The beer rips like a banana split. Milky chocolate and banana, with a nice syrup like sensing smell. Warming clove and brown spices with a hint of toasty qualities. It smells amazing.

Palate just explodes on first sip. Sticky toffee, with a crisp light feel. Popping carbonation and milk chocolate almost like penny candy and pop rocks. Fruity banana esters and a quality hop and clove like sensing finish on the swallow. Very light palate but more than enough flavor and makes for easy drinking.

I finished this beer in no time flat. This is not by any stretch one of my favorite styles, but this beer is probably my benchmark now for the style. It is flat out incredible.

Cloudy brown colored beer with a medium sized dark brown colored head.

Smells strongly of cloves. Reasonable banana scents. Dark dried fruits scents, dates, prunes and figs. Spicy some cinnamon and ginger join the clove aroma.

Starts out semisweet and spicy. Peppery tastes like a Pfeffernüsse cookie. Chocolate and spices but the flavor isn't as intense as the smell.

Mouthfeel is full.

Overall a tasty Weissbier.
