Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: BeerAdvocate on 06-03-2002

This dark Weissbier retains its aromatic character thanks to the select choice of Hallertau aroma hops and highest quality Bavarian wheat and dark barley malts.

Its characteristic, distinctive maroon colour is a feast for the eyes. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. The perfect complement is provided by the very creamy, fine pored head. This dark Weissbier from the Holy Mountain will delight connoisseurs with a harmonious interplay of fruity odours, above all ripe bananas and pineapple, with undertones of caramel and cocoa.

Andechser Weissbier Dunkel teases the tongue with a delicate tanginess carried by a round, soft body. A light caramel sweetness harmonises well with the fine hoppy bitterness. It concludes on a soft and refreshing note.

Bottle shared by Joe - much obliged!

Pours a hazy light brown color with a 1.5-finger tan head. The head recedes slowly into a thin layer on top leaving thick lacing.

Smells of caramel malts overloaded with bruised banana and various spices. As the beer warms the sweetness in the aroma subsides just a bit.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Smooth caramel malt flavors kick things off and are almost immediately overtaken by strong spices - clove mostly with hints of nutmeg and brown sugar. Midway through the sip hints of banana flavors work their way into things before they fade out into mildly earthy hops. The hop, malt, and spices carry through to a crisp and mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a smooth thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is also very good. I finished my glass quickly and could have a few more.

Overall neither the aroma nor the flavors blew me away with this beer although both were very solid. Everything else was solidly above average making this beer well worth a shot.

My first Andechs beer.Pours into a weizen glass a chestnut brown with a large blooming tan head atop.Roasted bananas in the nose along with clove and chocolate.Bananas are big on the palate with a bit of nuttiness and chocolate, the phenols are not in your face.Wow a great dunkel weiss here flavor packed but subtle.

Pours a finger and half of head on a cloudy light brown colored body.
The aroma is wet grain, light caramel and slight chocolate.
The taste is amazing: caramel, toasted malt, plum and a little banana. Excellent balance.
The texture is smooth and soft with a nice fizzy.
The taste and texture are both outstanding.

The beer has a thick head, almost like Guinness from the tap. The beer is very dark, almost black. I could smell cloves and a hint of malt. The initial taste was that of cloves and banana bread, and the aftertaste had a roasted malt character to it. As I drank more of the beer, I noticed more of a chocolate taste.

Bottle poured into a wheat beer glass

Full pour results into a fistful of thick, billowy taupe foam. Translucent dark brown liquid with no visible carbonation.

Aroma of carmaker and bananas , honey, toffee and rich sweet malts. Smells great.

Carbonation on the back of the tongue . Carbonation is not too much. Clean , smooth start. Banana, cloves, sweet toasted malts. Sweet, delicious, quaffable in mass quantities, refreshing. Medium mouthfeel. Bananas again. Clean finish.

A friend who lives in Munich took me to the and echo bar in downtown Munich. Heavenly beers in tap. Never knew that Andechs was available in the USA. Wonderfully delicious and refreshing beer, even for a dunker weissbier. Full flavor, sweet malts. Ill stock up if I can find more. I recommend you do the same.

The beer poured a light chocolate brown color with a 4+ f head in a Weizen glass.
Immediate clove and spice aroma wafting from the glass.

The mouth feel is moderately carbonated.

The taste is strong clove with a lemon aftertaste, and perhaps chocolate.
This beer is different than other Dunkeweizens than I have tasted:
The clove is more piquant- but not overwhelming.

The beer is well balanced. Although the body is slightly more watery than other Dunkelweizens.
it is quite enjoyable.

A classic taste from an old brewery.

500 ml bottle, bought in Germany. ABV is 5.0%. Cloudy dark brown colour, enormous thick and creamy light tan head. Lovely aroma of brown bread, yeast, cloves, banana and caramel. Flavour has malts, caramel, chocolate and cloves, some hops in the fairly dry finish. I had it on its own, must be good with food too. A very fine dunkelweizen.

500ml bottle into a New Glarus Weizen glass.

A: Hazy persimmon body under three fingers of dense, creamy tan head. Great retention but only spotty lace. Very nice.

S: Hugely complex aroma: banana, clove, chocolate, fig, and herbal hops. No one aspect dominates, and all are pleasantly enticing.

T: Delicious, but a little more straightforward than the vibrantly multifaceted nose: rich banana bread up front, mild spiciness midway through, and a cleanly bitter, hoppy finish. The bitterness is surprising, and takes away from the smoothness a bit, but is not entirely unwelcome.

M: Soft, creamy, highly effervescent medium body. Perhaps a little too bubbly, but good for the style.

O: Yet another excellent Andechs brew. The relatively high hoppiness for the style threw me off a bit at first, but in the end I really enjoyed it as a complement to the rich malt and ester sweetness.

Cheers!

500 ml bottle was poured into a hefeweizen glass.

Appearance: A two finger off white head was poured that reduced to a puffy layer. It is a dark brown black color with no vision of anything. That was expected for this style of beer.

Smell: Bananas, cloves, spice, caramel, bready wheat, loaf of bread, and Noble hops.

Taste: Nice Bavarian yeast, caramel, toffee, chocolate, bready wheat, and a loaf of delicious bread.

Mouthfeel: Filling, hearty, chewy, tasty, medium carbonation, and medium to full bodied.

Overall: So much flavor for a 5% beer. This style and doppelbocks are becoming a favorite of mine. This brewery makes both. Both if which are awesome stuff.

Picked this up at a great beer shop in Darmstadt, Germany, Maruhn Welt der Getränke. Cloudy chocolate brown pour with a huge three finger beige head with great retention and nice lacing. Malty, spicy, earthy nose with hints of brown bread, banana, dark fruits, toffee, and subtle cloves. The taste follows suit with big banana bread notes along with hints of toast, cocoa, spicy hops, nutmeg, dark fruits, toffee, nuts, cloves, and just a touch of cinnamon. The mouthfeel is lighter bodied than I had expected, but still substantial and slightly chewy. Subtle fizzy carbonation, great balance, and hugely drinkable. Overall, a great interpretation of the style from one of my favorite German Breweries.

Appearance: I must admit to being a fan of Andechs's methodof colour coding their beerlabels. In this instance the black front label looks good and the back label has a photo of the monastery, it's always nice to see a beer's home!. When poured, the beer is a dark brown, burnt caramel colour, the head forms qucly but soon dissipates.

Smell: Very promising, wheaty & stong

Taste: Excellent, this is just what I expected from this type of beer, the flavour really hits the back of your throat on it's way down. I'd love to be able to describe better but sadly I'm a mere amateur at this game!

Mouthfeel: This is a chunky beer with just the right amount of carbonation

Drinkability: More please!!

Pours a light brown color with a foamy head. Aroma of bubblegum and toasted malt. The flavor of bubblegum and banana, roasted malt, caramel and dry grains. Truly a remarkably tasty, authentic dunkel wiessbier from Germany. So good and to drink it in the Teutonia Mannechor, Pittsburgh's German club, was outstanding. Absolutely fantastic.
