This dark Weissbier retains its aromatic character thanks to the select choice of Hallertau aroma hops and highest quality Bavarian wheat and dark barley malts.

Its characteristic, distinctive maroon colour is a feast for the eyes. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. The perfect complement is provided by the very creamy, fine pored head. This dark Weissbier from the Holy Mountain will delight connoisseurs with a harmonious interplay of fruity odours, above all ripe bananas and pineapple, with undertones of caramel and cocoa.

Andechser Weissbier Dunkel teases the tongue with a delicate tanginess carried by a round, soft body. A light caramel sweetness harmonises well with the fine hoppy bitterness. It concludes on a soft and refreshing note.

Sampled on 10/10/05 at Probka, the beer came out a cloudy caramel brown under 3.5 fingers of thick beige head that lingered throughout the session and left some very nice lacing. The nose is marked by yeast and lemon, but is fairly mild. The mouth is light and very prickly. The taste is mild and characterized by yeast, slightly heavier than a pale, with subtle coriander and fruit. A bit of caramel emerges as it warms, but hops are nowhere to be found. Mild, smooth and nice brew.

Pours a cloudy dark chestnut brown color with dark amber edges and a two finger, frothy off-white head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Very good retention, taking a while to settle and leaving sporadic streaks of soapy lacing behind.

Inviting aroma with a nice balance of zesty spice, bready yeast, light fruit, citrus and slightly roasted malt. Very peppery with a strong clove presence followed by sourdough bread, banana and bubblegum. There's also a decent amount of citrus peel but it's somewhat overshadowed by the darker malt bill. Subtle roast with sweeter caramel, toffee, hazelnut and biscuit character. Nice complexity in the nose with a decent roasted malt presence that's well integrated into the weisse bier elements.

Medium body with soft carbonation and a strong peppery spice presence up front that lingers over the yeast, citrus and sweeter malt notes into a spritzy, tart finish. Hints of black pepper and clove dominate at first but are soon countered by some sourdough bread and banana before some citric acidity kicks in on the back end. The malt presence isn't as prominent as in the nose but it's still evident with subtle roast and hints of toasted malt, hazelnut, caramel and toffee. Decent amount of sweetness without taking away from the classic wheat beer flavors. Slightly tart lemon juice/pith flavor toward the back of the palate. Crisp and refreshing and while it's heavier than an average weissebier, it's still pretty easy to drink.

500mL bottle, with a code of L1703 stamped on the label. not sure how that translates into a date.

appears a very dark brown, nice thick cream colored head. great head retention and lacing, which lasts to the bottom of the glass. strong aroma of German ale yeast esters. very herbal. taste is slightly sweet. bready malt flavors, wheat. earthy. yeasty aftertaste. medium body, smooth carbonation, easy drinking.

Pours a opaque dark brown color with medium, off-white head. Aroma is wheat, cereals, spice and yeast. Taste is banana, wheat, some slight clove and spice with a roast grains balancing it out. Doughy yeast is also evident. Medium body with a good mouthfeel. Aftertaste is sweet.

16.9 oz bottle

Pours a translucent chestnut brown with a frothy light khaki head. Nose is sweet dark fruit and yeast, banana bread and brown sugar with a hint of roast. Smooth flavor with a slightly thinner than expected body. Bulk of flavor is banana and baked goods, dark fruits, cinnamon, wheat. Finish lingers with building roast and light grain. Not bad, but pales compared to the Weiss hell.

The colour is black-brown; the liquid is hazy. The finger thick head is pale brown.

The smell is sour (almost tart) with lightly roasted creamy notes. Fresh flavours of green apples, coffee, yeast and cocoa.

The taste is very fresh with notes of matured apples, plums, wheat dough, and coffee with cream. The aftertaste got notes of bitter hops/herbs, sour yeast, cocoa and a hint of red grapes.

The carbonation is fresh and quite strong, but at the same time quite short. Small bubbles. The liquid is medium smooth and a bit dry.

A nice example of a rather unusual style; a good wheat beer for the winter nights.

Poured chestnut brown with ruby edges. Very nice head, fluffy and independent. A thin head stuck around the whole time. Aroma is like a hefeweizen, but more malt and less fruitiness.

Flavor was pretty damn good, solid all around. Maybe a little too much carbonation, but that just may be me. Definitely similar to the hefeweizen flavor profile, save the intense banana thing. This dunkelweizen has a little more spice and malts. More bread as well. Tasty overall.

Definitely not Andechs' most impressive offering, but it confuses me to see average ratings for this brewery's beer. As far as I can tell (and after having drunk most of the Andechs' line) most of their brews are clearly above average.

Poured a seethru dark brown body with two finger head that quickly died but stuck around with a lace ring. Aroma is mostly barley malt with touches of hops and dark fruits. Smooth, creamy, some yeast/wheat twang with hint of banana sweetness and the malts give off a caramel and dry bread like vibe that has a little sweetness (almost a nutty sweetness at times) and a minor citric hop bite on finish.

Purchased at the Brewery to try at home,as they don't serve this brew on tap at the Kloster for some odd reason.
Pours out a deep mahagony deep tan brown color. The head is really a beauty to behold, thick, lightly tan, creamy, slowly thinning into a foamy cap leaving nice amounts of lacing.
A spiced red-wine poached fig comes to mind, pepper, dark bread, gluhwine, suprisingly spicy given the relativley low ABV. Sweet dark fruits, raisins, molasses, and a mustiness akin to oak adds a light hint of vanilla. The ever-present banana aroma in a Dunkle-Weisse is there, but subdued, allowing a spiced fruit/bread/spiced wine aromatic profile to come through. This already is begging to be served with game.
Flavor is not nearly as sweet as expected. The mouthfeel is light, highly carbonated, and finishes spicy. Spiced plums, dark bread, vanilla, gluhwine, vollkornroggenbrot(dark rye sourdough), dry merlot like character. The finish is spicy, lingering on the palate with pepper, fig, hint of vanilla, smoky molasses, and tobacco.
Dunkle Weizens sometime become too sweet over the course of time for my taste, although I love the style. Sometimes too dominated by a sweet bread/banana flavor that really hides the complexity of the spiced profile of these beers. I find this one to be a stellar example of a more rustic, spicy, warming version of the Stellar Weizen. I have to admit, after reading the previous reviews, I was a bit worried about this beer falling flat.
It doesn't approach the practically-perfect Weihenstephan Dunkleweizen, but a clean, well balanced brew.
Once again, Venison with a port wine sauce, or Duck, as the spiciness of this brew would clean the palate nicely with a rich meat. Well done

A: Murky brown color under a massive compact pale brown head. Really slow dissipation leaves rich lacings.

S: A mild metallic smell hits the nose at first, then the ripe bananas and the roasted malt appears. Citric notes along sides with cloves. Some yeast. But a bit milder smell than I was hoping for.

T: Ripe bananas, sweet. Malt is roasted, but balanced. Lots of cloves. Some bitterness. Creamy. Faint strong black coffee.

M: Quite long bitter aftertaste. Body is smooth and a bit thicker than most in this style. Lots of small bubbles.

O: A bit uneven, nice though. The best part is the mix between barley and wheat - very smooth and well balanced.

This is one of the bottles I brought back from my last trip. I've seen this beer available on tap at the Am Dom restaurant, but not at the monastery.
Pours a very deep brown color. Where most dunkel weisses are lighter brown, this one is dark like a dunkel or doppelbock. Not much light makes it through because it's unfiltered, and dark. Head's pretty rocky, too.
The overwhelming flavor notes are of banana bread, hints of cocoa, and a little nutmeg spice. Much of the fruity notes in the normal Andechser weissbier are muted, but the bready flavor is still good.
Goes down really easily on a summer evening. Drinking several would be no problem at all.
Overall, it's good, but compared to what other beers Andechs has, it's only the middle of the pack.
For the style, it's a little above average, but somewhat mild. It's insanely drinkable...but if you're at Andechs, so is everything. As a trade or bottle, it's nothing special.
I think for a DW to truly be great, it should stand out like the Wiehenstephan example.

16.9 bottle served cold in glass weisse beer challis

L) More 'dunkel' than most. Effervescent fizz, unfiltered and cloudy. A thing of beauty

S) Sweet root beer float. Mild bitter spice, fruity, musty

T) Rich caramel, complex, delicious. Cooked fruit, sweet and mild

F) Sticky but ample carbonation keeps this beer smooth and very drinkable

O) Bottom line: A darker than average version of the dunkel weisse. Hence if you like a beer with a bit more of that cooked, sweet caramel, AND you like this style, this is a great selection. Well, I do so I will be sure to buy more assuming I can find it.

The beer pours an amber color with a white head. The aroma is dark fruit, yeast and caramel. The flavor is similar with dark fruit, caramel, toffee, yeast, bananas and cloves. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very good dunkelweizen from a very good brewery.

Very small fizzy head fades quickly, super murky brownish nutty molasses colored beer

Nose true German weiss wheat beer, with wheat, hints of darker malt like with touch of caramel, and some toasty nutty malts, light caramel toasted popcorn, lots of darkish wheat, hint if spices, caramelized banana.

Taste starts lighter, fluffy malts, lots of wheat again with some light bananas foster, hint of weiss like spices, even touch of citrus. Then darker malts, light caramel and toffee, nutty, and again that light toasted fresh unseasoned popcorn. Hint of yeast fruit, etc. however slightly lighter overall character. finish is light and dry, long lingering wheat flavor with hint of bitterness, caramel bananas, and toffee.

Mouth is lighter bodied, a bit too light, decent carb though.

Overall nice but a bit thin, nice malts, interesting almost steinbier flavors, fairly tasty and very drinkable.

The beer comes in a dark toasty brown.

The beer has a toasted nuttiness towards a brown ale. There's a decent amount of caramel sweetness, light cocoa chocolate, and then onto a big German yeast spiciness of banana and fruit esters.

A good amount of flavor for a dunkel without being too like a hefe simply with toasted qualities.

A: The beer is hazy very dark brownish red in color (black when viewed from afar). It poured with a finger and a half high off white head that died down but consistently left a thin head covering the surface and a thicker collar around the edge of the glass. When I was rinsing out the bottle, lots of large clumps of yeast came out so leave some beer in the bottle and give it some swirls if you want to get all of the yeast.
S: Moderate aromas of bananas are present in the notes along with strong notes of dark fruits.
T: The taste has flavors of bananas and dark fruits along with notes of clove and hints of caramel malts and wheat. Bits of sweetness are perceptible.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is an excellent representation of the style as the taste has lots of complex flavors, even without getting all of the yeast out of the bottle.

had i not just had the regular hefe they make, this would have stood as an amazing dunkel. but compared to its lighter brother, this just isnt as remarkable. that said, its an awesome example of the style and is one of the better versions i have had in awhile. these guys are awesome, i am yet to have a beer from them that was anything but extremely impressive. deep mahogany in color, with what appears to be a ton of carbonation and a tall off white head in my weissbier glass. rich caramelized aroma, quite sweet, but there are darker notes of roasted barley coming though as well. less of the banana yeast than the hell version, but its still there, just balanced out a bit more by the grain. the flavor is the same as the nose, with a pretty high degree of residual sugar, which i think hurts the overall experience. i would like this to be drier, its filling a little and distraction to the yeast, which is still the focal point, just not as expressive as the hefe they do. dark dried fruits and brown sugar notes in the middle, with the german malt character and the yeast coming on later. long long finish on this one, and a little less than ideal carbonation, but it warms up well and is a heck of a value for how good it is.

Pours murky medium brown with a rocky tan foam head. I wish this one would grow a bigger thicker head. I slight disappointment, but a minor one.

Yeast, banana, some clove, a little bubblegum and some toasted aromas.

Tasty and refreshing, big fruit up front, with some sweet wheat and grain. As the palate clears you get some of that dark wheat toast and some bitterness to set the balance right. A little banana/fruit and yeasty wheat in the end too.

Lighter bodied, well carbonated.

Very nice. An under-appreciated style and one that is very well done here. Nice complexity and balance here, with an underlying richness that you appreciate as you drink. Bought one bottle, could easily drink another right now.

Powerful aroma of mixed spices fruit, yeast and sweetness...deep rich colour, all matched to the taste...deep, rich, fruity, real depth of character, though the powerful tastes do not encourage it as a session beer, maybe a bit too sweet for that in my opinion, but - as always with Andechs - a wonderful beer not to be missed.

Drank from my Erdinger weizen glass.

A - Pours a hazy amber colour with an off white two fingered head that reduces to a film.

S - Hints of caramel malt and banana and a little sweetness.

T - Nice caramel flavours up front with a srong spiceyness follwing before some clove and banaa kick in. A little hoopy and crisp on the finish.

M - Medium body and carbonation.

Drinkability is also very good. I finished my glass quickly and could have a few more.

O - Well worth a shot

Beer bottle (50 cl.), purchased in Bières & Chopes and tasted in 2011.

Appearance : brown color, with huge tan foamy head (w lacing).
Smell : wheaty and yeasty aromas.
Taste and mouthfeel :wheaty flavours, with notes of caramel and dark fruits.
Drinkability : a good beer in the style Dunkel weizen.

Served cool from 500ml bottle into weisse bier glass.

A) Dark chestnut brown, hazy. Head is very thin for a weisse.

S) Fairly muted slightly menthylated cloves.

T) Deep malty, hints of roasted malt / smoke. The banana / clove character is quite muted.

M) Fairly thin and fizzy - and I am not complaining.

O) I was expecting something similar to Schneider Weisse Original and Weihenstephaner Dunkel, but this is an entirely different take on the style and that is great. The roasted flavour comes more into place here giving a well balanced and enjoyable bier. Fill your boots.

An even mahogany, translucently opaque with a solid ivory head. Huge molasses aroma dominates the smell, with pumpernickel bread on the side and heaping helpings of licorice, raisins, and rum without the burn. Sweetish taste, like a dry, drinkable cinnamon roll, sublimated with nuances of basil, anise, clove, root beer, and some faint banana bread. The carbonation is slightly too sharp, and the body slightly too thin, to carry all these wonderful flavors, but nonetheless this is delicious.

500mL into a weizen glass. Pours a clear cola brown w/ a nice creamy mocha head, good carbonation.

Aroma is mellow banana and clove, some other spices.

Taste is overripe (brown) banana and winter spices. Clean and crisp, just a hint of grain. Good clean water.

Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, really nicely balanced.

Overall, yes. This is a very nice beer. Simple and elegant.

A: Poured into a Hofbrau Munchen stein. Murky mahogany brown. Suspended yeast sediment. 2 finger frothy and foamy head settles quickly to creamier film.

S: Lots of clove and banana. Moderate wheat and bread notes. Low bubblegum scent. Roasted caramel malt.

M: Creamy but light bodied. Soft and fluffy. Medium carbonation dries it up.

T: Plain and simple, like a slice of chocolate chip banana bread. Light twang of bubblegum, toffee, brown sugar, walnuts, cracked wheat, and hop spice. This beer is just as good in summer with its light body as it is in the winter months with its comforting flavor.
