Since Saint Joseph’s Day on 19 March 1993, Andechs Weissbier Hell has found many new friends. Untreated and bottled in its natural state of yeasty turbidity, this is a top fermented beer for the epicure.

Its light honey colour makes it an immediate eyecatcher. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. At the same time, the creamy, fine pored head invites you to get to know this light Weissbier from the Holy Mountain. You’ll need two takes to enjoy the aromas to the full.

First, distinctive fruity aromas like banana and honeydew melon come to the fore, followed by fine cloves. Andechser Weissbier Hell is a very tangy, refreshing treat with the conviction of a full, soft body. It concludes on a finely balanced interplay of light sweet honey and a delicate acidity with undertones of bitter hoppiness that quickly subside into a harmonious aftertaste.

0.5L mug served vom fass with a rich creamy white head, an opaque honey colored selction accompanied by a foot-wide fresh pretzel. The nose is like a mildly intoxicating clove perfume. And your first sip is a shock - should a mere mortal be drinking something this refined, this celestial? Despite the relentless frantic commotion and conversations filling the Braustuberai, time around you slows as you sip this experience. Yes-cloves, nutmeg, pepper, but Frankinsense? Crepuscular rays? The Grail? Unbelievable. Enjoyed fresh at Kloster Andechs - I highly and truly recommend you visit this place.

The beer pours a hazy yellow color with a white head. The aroma is strong bananas and cloves. The flavor is bananas, yeast and cloves. Medium, creamy mouthfeel and medium carbonation. This beer is exactly what I am looking for in a hefeweizen. Awesome.

A- This brew pours a pale golden color with a slight hazy 1st pour and a much denser 2nd pour. There is a sea of boiling microbubbles that support a thick creamy off-white head that laces with each sip.
S- The rich yeasty aroma with a full banana is followed by a hop note and then a clove note comes through and grows as the beer opens up.
T- A mellow white bread dough and yeasty flavor has a soft clove spice quality and a soft dry pils malt note in the background. The finish is a slight tartness with a slight carbonic acid note in that cleans up the finish. A soft green hop note grows into a nice hop snap as it warms.
M- The medium-light mouthfeel has an effervescent carbonation in the finish.
D- This beer has a nice green flavor that is a bit dry and a bit softer than the aroma and less complex, but very drinkable none the less.

a very formal beer... i suppose would call it proper in that it isn't a dessert. good color with a substantial amount of cloudiness. nice yeasty head. nose of mild citrus, and some coriander. palate is on the savory side... or a mild sweet. not smoked but some citrus zest bitter. very very mild sweet. fantastic balance that body and esters come forth in the wheat malt.

A - Hazy golden straw and orange lemon color with a large, pillowy, thick, creamy soapy white color head. Good retention settling into a nice creamy layer of lace.

S - A lot of malted wheat aroma. Some banana and clove, but not as much as other Hefeweizens. Fair amount of lemon and orange citrus. A lot of yeast aroma and some basic herbal/spice aroma.

T - Similar to the nose with a nice wheat and bready malt taste. Strong fruit flavor with golden peach and apricot fruit and some lemon and orange citrus. Slight tartness comes out later along wit a bit of mineral taste. Decent amount of yeast. Banana, clove, and bubblegum are all present, but not as strong as a number of Hefeweizens.

M - On the lighter side of medium body with a good amount of carbonation. Pretty smooth.

D - A very enjoyable beer that isn't quite as bold or strong as some other Hefeweizens. Very easy to drink beer, and I could definitely have another.

Notes: Best before 20/10/10. Overall this is a nice Hefeweizen. It isn't the best beer I've had, but it is solid. Not quite as full or have the spice/fruitiness as most others in the style, but it is there. tasty beer that is worth trying.

Another great South German hefe with an ancient tradition.
0.5 l bottle poured in my Weihenstephaner glass.
This particular sample showed 'best before sept. 2010'.

This beer is golden coloured, decent carbonation, fluffy head. Initially clear, it turns into cloudy yellow with orange glow, after pouring the last bit. Nice to watch this process.

Smell is rather mellow. Wheat, banana, a bit of citrus, some herbs.
Taste is similar. It's also mellow bittersweetness all over.
Mouthfeel is extremely smooth. This is a beer that goes down very well. Not a trace of harshness at all, making it very drinkable indeed.

This hefeweizen is well balanced, but also modest in it's aroma and flavours.
I'll surely try a younger version of this beer too, if I get the chance, to see if it makes a more complex experience.

Pours with a billowing pure white head that dies down pretty quickly and leaves a thin residual white head; deeply cloudy vibrant yellowy orange color.

Getting loads of banana in the nose and it is quickly followed by sharper citrus aromas that are a touch sour; cloves and bubblegum-like flavors are definitely present as well.

Not quite the banana bomb as much as in the aroma, but still definitely the dominant flavor followed only by a pretty nice citrus burst and then has a more muted quality around the clove side of things, but it's still there. Fluffy MF, yeasty, bubbly carbonation, really quite good over the palate. This brew is fantastic in drinkability terms, refreshing, tasty, has some nice interesting layers, and is everything a good hefe should be. Great stuff.

Big thanks to Matt for bringing some Andechs love back from Germany. Served this in a pint glass due to limited selection at the parent's house. Label denotes a best before date of February 27th, 2010. I also dug the random factoids about Carl Orff.

A - Three-plus fingers of soapy white foam that dissipates quickly until about a finger and a half are left behind - then it dissipates quite slowly and eventually settles to an attractive thick cap. Not a ton of lace, with just a few spots dotting the glass. Hazed, unfiltered color, that isn't too pale and rests more on the orange side of things than yellow. Gets a little milky near the bottom of the bottle.

S - Intense - it's initially a strong banana and bubblegum sweetness, but as it warms more of the yeast and clove character emerges. Light malted wheat, but not overly sharp - more like fresh sweet bread (as in the Portugese grain product and NOT cow's pancreas). Excellent balance of sweet, starchy, and tangy, with the slightest hint of sour Berliner Weiss flavor starting to creep in.

T - The taste is more wheat-oriented, with a very intense bread character. The finish is light banana, and the aftertaste is fairly clean although it gets a touch yeasty by the end of the 1/2 liter. Thankfully the cloves are in the periphery. Less complex than the aroma, but still quite pleasant.

M - This is overcarbonated (which thankfully is easier to solve than undercarbonation). It makes the beer a bit too harsh and gritty for my liking. The body is a little bigger than most hefeweizen's which helps offset the bubbliness. Dry finish with minimal residual feel.

D - If this were less carbonated it would be one of the best session wheats out there - and would be very similar to the Schneider Weizenhell. It's one of the better German wheats and is worth trying if you're over there, but probably not worth deliberately seeking out with some many other options available.

Cloudy lemon pour with a billowing white head. Good retention and lace. Strong wheat aroma with the expected banana and clove notes, though not as strong as most hefes. I'm not sure if this bottle is past its prime, but its tastes a little tired. There are some very good banana and clove notes there, but there's also a bit of mustiness, like a forgotten book in somebody's attic. Aside from that there's a nice touch of sourness from the wheat and light apple notes in the background, but nothing that really wows me. The same cannot be said of the body, however, which is spot on. Perfect medium-light body and pillowy carbonation, but not enough to save a ho-hum hefe. Ah well...

My first Andechs. really hard to find in SC, but here in Germany...89 cents on the shelf.Yes please.
Pours out to reveal agorgeous head, light golden color, gets murkier as the bottle is decanted. Super carbonation gives a very lively body. Really fantastic head, great retention.Really a very bright looking Hefe.
The aromatics take to an even higher level.Really good funky smell, yeasty, fruity,-cloves, nutty grains, orange, yeasty banana, black pepper phenolic spiciness. great for a 5.5% brew. apples come through in the spicy-fruity grain mix. This is either a great Hefe or a bowl of really good Muselix. Digging deeper, and as the beer warms, the complexity really unfolds. I find notes of vanilla, banana, smoke, oak, and a light caramelized sweetness that adds the perfect touch of roundness in the aroma. Weihenstephan, the reigning king of Weissbiers in my book may have been dethroned.
Flavor is extremely balanced, note of oaky graininess gives way to citrus, yeasts, wheaty creaminess. a light tobacco, and a great amount of spice. The vanilla notes come through again and adds a delicate foil of sweetness to the spicy/carbonated balance of perfection. Another stand out factor of this brew is the great carbonation. The yeast has performed its duties quite well, and added a perfect amount of carbonation and cream.This is easily one of the best Weiss beers I have ever had.
The mouthfeel is lively and exciting. I really enjoy the more creamy examples of Hefe's i.e Franziskaner, Weihenstephaner, but this packs the same amount of flavor in and adds an exciting punch of carbonation. I'm not one to award a high score just based on rareness or avaliablitiy, but this beer really is the quintessence of a style. Weihenstephan Weiss is fantastic, but can be bought in the U.S. You cannot buy Andechs Weiss readily in the states, or even in Germany, as with Westy beers you have to seek it out to enjoy. What a perfect balance, and pleasure to enjoy.This was a great brew, and look foward to trying others from this brewery. I could not ask for more in a Weizen.

This beer pours like a classic hefeweizen. A hazy straw colour with a large, fluffy white head. Great head retention and plenty of lovely lace. This is one damn fine looking beer and spot on for style.

Aromas are all classic hefeweizen. Banana, wheat and a hint of bubblegum.

Flavours aren't as strong as the aroma but there are more complexities. Big banana is accompanied by hints of clove and apple. Wheat offers its own delicious character and I get just the slightest tart edge to cut this beer and add some more refreshing qualities.

This is a light, refreshing quaffer. Vibrant carbonation livens up this beer and this really is a perfect summer beer.

Poured from a .5L bottle to a hefe glass the color very cloudy yellow orange with good carbonation. The head is big and white and leaves some nice lace.

The smell is a classic Bavarian hefe, lots of banana and clove.

The taste is also quite good, really not much more to say the this is reall good, high quality hefe weitzen.

The mouthfeel is good lighter then medium body and good carbonation.

The drinkability of this brew is high great quality and easy drinking. It does not seem to be the best I have had, looking forward to a taste vom fass.

Pour this one into a weizen glass, because you'll need the extra headroom to accommodate the sizeable pile of off-white froth atop this picturesque beer. The body is almost exactly the same color as orange juice (or Tang - remember Tang?), just a little bit darker; the yeast forms a dense, thick mist that makes the beer opaque. Spicy banana reminiscent of bananas foster dominates (as it should in any good Weissbier), but not without allowing in some lovely nuances of orange juice, apples, lemonade, walnuts, and something earthy and funky that calls to mind the funk of a Flanders red. Relentlessly refreshing with an airy dryness, biting spice, and robust yet light and fruity character. Tons of bananas, apples, cinnamon, clove, bubblegum, lemon, and minty herbal hops. Juicy and full - maybe a bit too heavy, in fact, but still fantastic! A damn good summer beer... or anytime beer!

Also it is surprisingly good with Shropshire Blue!

Arguably the best weissbier in the world...or at least not far behind the Weihenstephan example.
Like the other beers at Andechs, this comes straight from a large wooden keg, although they serve it in a halbe (1/2L mug) rather than a typical weizen glass. In town, you'll get it in a weizen glass, though. Cloudy, pale with a giant head.
VERY fruity. The typical banana/clove/spice is there, but there are also hints of pineapple, pears, and tropical fruits. While some examples focus on spice (like Erdinger) this one focuses on fruit. Both the flavor and nose of this beer are much more potent than any other I've had. Think Vitus, but without the kick.
No chalky texture or wateriness at all. Easy to drink, and something I could probably have over and over.
If you like weizen beers, seek this one out.
I brought back a bottle of this, so I'm a little curious to see how it'll compare to the fresh/tap version.

Into a Weizen Glass

APPEARANCE: Pours a medium 2+ finger fluffy medium white head. Colour is orange-tangerine and is very cloudy. Next to zero carbonation evident. Head slowly levels out to a thin film, that basically disappears later as well. Decent lacing.

SMELL: Wheat malt, some banana, lemon and a decent amount of clove as well. A bit of bubble gum in the back too. Decent strength on the nose, and is quite nice.

TASTE: Wheat malt and a strong sweet lemon component. Clove in there as well. The strong but short lasting aftertaste is sweet with citrus qualities. Taste is relatively nice and medium in strength.

PALATE: Medium body with low end carbonation. Goes down smooth with no bite and finishes comparatively dry. Nice palate.

OVERALL: A drinkable brew for sure. It's nice in a subtle way, is not offensive or overpowering, meaning one could drink quite a few of these in an evening. The look hurt it somewhat, but otherwise this is one worth re-visiting. Solid.

A- Hazy, golden body. Nice white, foamy head with great retention. Leaves a nice lacing.

S- Very yeasty with some clove and a slight note of citrus.

T- A good bit of clove here. Only a touch of bubblegum followed by a slight citrus. Taste is pretty dry from start to finish.

M- Medium body with moderate carbonation. Cuts out pretty quickly.

D- Very drinkable for a weissbier. Goes down easy and doesn't overpower your palate.

Overall, this is definitely not my favorite weissbier, but it certainly isn't bad.

On tap at the pub in Munich, served in the impressive Andechs weizen glass.

Appearance: Straw-colored and nearly opaque, this one arrived with a towering 2 1/2 finger head that retained ridiculously well.

Smell: Yeasty as hell with lots of signature banana and clove along with a slight mineral quality.

Taste & mouthfeel: Banana and a touch of bubblegum open this one up. Surprisingly dry, though still malt-forward and very complex. Medium in body, bordering on full. The finish ends on a dry note with barely a trace of bitterness, though this one's dry nearly from start to finish. Drinkability is through the roof; this beer is complex in a subtle way that never fatigues the palate. I could've drank liters of this.

50CL bottle poured into erdinger weissbier glass.

A- Dark yeasty amber colouring. Head retention is immense, everlasting and great lacing.

S- Lots of cloves, a touch musty, the more i smell i start to get a little burnt rubber lol. Not much banana or spice.

T- Once again lots of clove, a little musty still. Flavour diminishes quickly.

M- Moderate carbonation, a bit greasy on the tongue.

D- Doesnt have the flavour or refreshment of Weihenstephan. Albeit drinkable, still far off from a gold standard Weissbier

This beer came last in a blind tasting of 4 German brewed Hefewiezrn biers held at my place last week (Sep 2008). It was up against biers from Krombacher (the best), Erdinger and Schofferhofer.

Typical murky, clouldy yellow body you come to expect of a Hefewiezen, good light head that hangs around for most of the drink.

There was a lot of vanilla and banana in the aroma, but not much spice or citrus to be found.

The taste was again average, not as spritzy, tangy or crisp as the other biers in the tasting, almost bland in some aspects.

I know this beer seems to get high scores from most reviewers, but it did very little to get many votes when compared to the others mentioned. A big dissapointment all round for me.

Pours with a copious head, very fluffy and aromatic. Pungent banana, tang and spice in the nose. Orange and straw color.

It has that same Hefeweizen character, but there's something about the Andechs that is absolutely delicious. It's tart, tangy, sweet, bready, phenolic and creamy all at the same time. Really a top-notch brew. The carbonation is very fine and not overpowering, which adds to the incredible smoothness of this brew. I think this more desirable mouthfeel sets it apart from other german Hefeweizens. I wish the Andechs hefe was as common as the other excellent wheat beers in Germany, but alas, it is a rare bird here in Berlin.

*EDIT, March 2011: On a side-by-side with Weihenstephaner, the Andechs holds it own. It's actually more complex, with a great lemony tartness and earthy character that the Weihenstephaner just does not offer. In the end, they're two remarkable wheat beers. Prost!

A cloudy looking brew, golden to orange in color with a big head on it. Only the slightest lacing.

The first thing that has my attention when smelling the beer is a buttery note that is quite strong, giving the beer a bit of a cloying character. This is contrasted by a sour and dryish tang that is a little sharp and penetrating as well. Banana is there too, as well as a small bit of hops and of course yeast.

In tasting the beer, typical banana and clove accents are met with first. Slowly they make way for a dry and bitter finish that becomes a little watery for a moment, but then moves on to an after-taste that brings back the sweetness while remaining bitter (very charming). The slick, buttery feel is again quite strong.

A good and strong body and carbonation give this beer a tender feel to the mouth.

This Hefe tends towards the saltier side of the spectrum, but seems to be pulled back by a soddenness that I found to be somewhat nauseating. (Maybe I should have had this cooler or fresher....)

Split a bottle with some friends, as this is a beer that should be shared out of charity.

Pours a hazy yellow-gold with a fluffy white head that leaves lacing. The aroma and flavor are rich with yeast character - tons of orange, herbal spice, clove, and vanilla. All these tasty flavors carry over only the palate with a mellow wheat malt and bready grains. The body has a little weight to it, but for the most part this is a tasty hefe you could happily drink all day and night long.

A murky orange, yellow beer with a creamy blanket of foamy head. It pours like velvet.

Smell is full of clove. This is the one Weizen that only has the clove and not the banana's, although there is exotic fruit in here. The wheat adds a grainy and fresh, mango smell.

Taste is clovey with some dextrines. This is a pretty thick beer for a Weizen and it is kind of sticky too. The wheat is grainy and adds the mango and grape taste together with the yeast. So full of phenols. Drinkability is great.

I had this bee at the Andechser Mannheim restaurant. I am certain I have never had a better Weiss beer. Nice glass, good head, smooth, smell; just great. I drank several, didn't try any other styles, this one was too good. If I ever get back to Mannheim, this will be my first stop.

Beer bottle (50cl), tasted in 2007.

Appearance : golden color, with a creamy white head.
Smell : clove, banana, pear and malted wheat aromas.
Taste and mouthfeel : well balanced, very delicious finish and refreshing with wheat flavor, and notes of clove.
Drinkability : a very good beer in the style hefeweizen.
