Since Saint Joseph’s Day on 19 March 1993, Andechs Weissbier Hell has found many new friends. Untreated and bottled in its natural state of yeasty turbidity, this is a top fermented beer for the epicure.

Its light honey colour makes it an immediate eyecatcher. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. At the same time, the creamy, fine pored head invites you to get to know this light Weissbier from the Holy Mountain. You’ll need two takes to enjoy the aromas to the full.

First, distinctive fruity aromas like banana and honeydew melon come to the fore, followed by fine cloves. Andechser Weissbier Hell is a very tangy, refreshing treat with the conviction of a full, soft body. It concludes on a finely balanced interplay of light sweet honey and a delicate acidity with undertones of bitter hoppiness that quickly subside into a harmonious aftertaste.

500ml bottle served in a Weihenstephan Weizen.

A: Pours a cloudy orange to beige color forming a huge white bubbled creamy white head. Excellent retention and many chunks of foam left in the glass. Well, as a matter of fact, it never disappear completely remaining for looong time

S: Great in the nose. Very wheat, with notes of banana and loves as expected. It's also sweet and bready. German yeast

T: Follows the nose. Wheat backbone. Notes of banana esters, cloves, sweet malts and white bread. In overall, a slightly sweet and very smooth beer in the mouth. Simply perfect

M: Light but creamy body. Low carbonation. Veeery smooth sensation. Bready aftertaste

O: Absolutely drinkable beer. Great German beer. Recommended (730 characters)

appearance: Light yellow, bit hazy, good firm foamy top.

smell: The usual white bear smell, banana, bread-like, but weak in smell.

taste: Like the smell suggest a bit of a weak, yet refreshing, flavor. It's almost like a light beer. Bit of bread and banana, with a tad of citrus freshness.

mouthfeel: Fresh and light. Quite some carbonation going on.

overall: It's a nice bear, but nothing really special. Just a nice refreshing average summer white bear. (462 characters)

Andescher's hefeweissbier is a solid offering from the brewery, full of good banana, bread, and ester/phenol flavors when at the appropriate temperature and pleasurably complex. Only the nose was slightly timid, and even this opened up a bit with warmth. Definitely one of the better bottled hefeweizens I've had, this must be impressive on-tap or if available very fresh. Another one that would be nice to have distributed in North America.

Pours an enormous meringue-like head composed of small and medium-sized bubbles, which takes many minutes to reduce to a 0.5cm cap atop the beer. Little lacing is left along the sides of the glass, just a few dots and spotches of residual foam. Peering at the body, I notice aggressive streams of carbonation and the cloudy, opaque character that's due to the unfiltered preparation of the beer. Body color is a pale yellow-orange away from light, holding the beer near the window displays a dull orange center with pale yellow on either side.

Aromas are primarily of yeast combined with bread-like and sweet wheat malt. Moderate banana esters and and very faint coriander follow closely behind. Aroma becomes more expressive as the beer warms, with comforting breadiness and slight vanilla. Still, not the strongest or most complex aroma on a hefeweizen, a bit disappointing given the status of the brewery and this particular beer, but still good.

Tip of the tongue picks up noticeable, but muted, yeast, cooked wheat cereal, and cut lemon flavors. Front of the palate has a decent explosion in flavor, with fairly strong banana, sweet malt, yeast, and very light spicy phenolics. Mid-palate brings on some thicker banana and bread components with reduced yeastiness, lighter phenolics, coriander, apple cider, and a bit of vanilla. Back of palate continues to pick up pleasant banana bread flavors with a slight hint of tartness and coriander. Closes with a flash bitterness and tartness, fading to sweetness and an aftertaste that is mildly tart and reminiscent of the wheat malt, with a bit of residual apple cider and banana flavor as well. Overall, the flavors in the beer are very noticeable, complex, and enjoyable.

Solidly medium-bodied, the beer has a refreshing combination of thickness from the wheat/malt mix and crispness from the carbonation level. Very smooth initially, leading to a dry finish that complements the tart aftertaste nicely. (2,498 characters)

500ml bottle courtesy of my good friend Thirstybird. Served in my Weihenstephaner weisse glass. Best before 23 08 12 indicated on the back label. Pours a semi-hazy straw gold with a rocky, two inch bright white head. head settles into a solid, half inch cap - some spots of lacing are revealed but exhibit poor retention. Nose expresses wheat, banana esters and clove; however, it is all somewhat subdued. Taste consistent with nose; however, the wheat overshadows the other flavors expressed in the nose. There's also a light lemony quality interspersed with a slight breadiness that reveals itself towards the back. Mouthfeel is light in body with a lively, even carbonation and the merest hint of acidity. Overall, a very good, albeit not great, Hefeweizen. Not sure if this may be a little past its prime as the flavors are a bit dull. I'll have to retry a fresh bottle to see if that's the case. (900 characters)

The appearance is typical of the style. Straw yellow in color with a dense, white head. Fantastic aroma with banana, clove, spices, wheat. Refreshing flavor. Light and soft on the palate. Poundable. Superb balance. I would love to try this side by side with Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier, as these are without question the two best examples of a German hefeweizen I have ever had. From 02/11/12 notes. Bottle shared by Thorep429; thanks Mike! This beer wasn't on my radar and is probably one of the best hefeweizens I've had. Poured into a tulip.

a - Pours a hazy straw yellow color with one finger of fluffy white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of bananas, spices, cloves, Belgian yeast, light citrus, light floral, and light pepper. Fresh bananas dominate here and are awesome. One of the best smelling hedeweizens I've ever smelled.

t - Tastes of bananas, spice, pepper, cloves, Belgian yeast, and light floral notes. more pepper then the nose. Very nice but not quite as good as the nose.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Super smooth and creamy, and insanely easy to drink. Awesome body.

o - Overall I thought this was an outstanding hefeweizen; it's up there with the Live Oak hefe, Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier, and Moon Man as one of the best I've ever had. The nose is awesome, and just a ton of fresh bananas, and it is insanel easy to drink. The taste was good but not quite as great as the nose, as it focused more on pepper. An awesome beer I can't wait to have again. (1,134 characters)

Beer is soft and yellow, hazy, big white head, lacing, nice carbonation.

Aroma is sweet, banana, mildly spicy, near perfect aroma.

Beer is soft, sweet, smooth, wet finish. No aftertaste, a great yeast palate, no bitterness, smooth and wonderful. I really loved this beer. I really want some more. (363 characters)

Beer pours a hazy yellow/gold, just like a hefe should. The smell is just awesome, a really big banana and bubblegum aroma. Taste is great as well, balance between all of your usual hefe elements is perfect and the bubblegum sweetness stands out and gives it something a little unique. Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied and very nice. I had this alongside it much more well-known brother the Doppelbock, and not only was more surprised by this beer, but actually thought it was the better of the two. It's right up there with Live Oak as one of the best hefes I've ever had. (614 characters)

Bottle picked up from an overseas shop; thanks to yourefragile for the assist. Served in a SAVOR wine glass alongside the doppelbock.

Pours a cloudy yellow-straw color with a nice and fluffy white head. Good retention and lacing on the way down. The nose has heavy yeast character with nice banana and bubblegum notes, and a touch of clove in the background.

A light breadiness exists in the flavor, serving as the base for the yeast. Nice notes of bubblegum and banana throughout with a touch of spice to the finish. Light-medium body with slight chewiness and a silky finish. Really well made. I'm glad I finally got to try this longtime want. (648 characters)

A- Hazy light golden, just what you expect in a weizen. Three fingers head (i usually get a bit more when pouring in a weizenglass), very dense and soft, shows good retention and leaves a good amount of lacing on the glass

S- A light, fresh wheat hint and some yeast notes merge in a refreshing bubblegum-like feel, with some spicy notes of clove and pepper showing up. I don't how if aroma can be described as soft, but if it can be than this is definitely very soft.

T- Very soft as the smell suggested. Mild and refreshing sweetness from the malts with a delicate wheat note, not your breadiest hefeweizen for sure. A bubblegum-like feel as the smell suggested, with spiciness playing a major but still never assertive role, with notes of pepper and of course clove. Light background citric notes on the tongue (lemon, orange peel)

M- Again extremely soft. Decently lively but still gentle carbonation among a delicate light-bodied feel. Overall nicely smooth on both tongue and palate

O- Drinkabilty and overall balance are both very good. Overall a delicate, refreshing weizen. It just lacks something to make it unique, something that might make it a standout among all those weizens out there. I mean, i never tried this beer before but i kind of felt like i already had (1,295 characters)

Poured from the bottle into my Weihenstephan weizen glass.

A - Glorious. Yellowy amber, cloudy and effervescent beneath a giant dense foamy white head which carries on to the bottom of the glass. Large chunks of lace adorn the sides and billowing swirls of sediment whirl around the body.

S - Heavy banana, accompanied by old mates clove, wheat and yeast.

T - Follows the nose with a banana backbone with inklings of clove, coriander, wheat and yeast.

M - Moderate to full body, chewy and soapy. Moderately carbonated.

O - A top tier German hefeweizen, though without the depth of flavour of a Weihenstephan. (613 characters)

Poured into a weihenstephan weizen glass.

A- Pours a golden yellow, with about 2 inches of fluffy white head that takes ages to subside, looks almost marshmallowy from the top. impressive.

S- heaps of banana straight up, a touch of clove and spice behind it, but im really searching for anything else.

T- sweetness upfront, banana comes in midway and lingers until the end of the beer, spice and a light clove begins to come through once ive gotten used to the banana, there is some citrus in there, and its really quite nice.

F- mouth filling, yet with a prickly carbonation that makes it seem lighter, nice length of flavour too. very good.

O- i liked this beer, its definitely one i would re-visit if it wasnt so difficult to find (and its a tad pricey in melbourne). (779 characters)

I not always liked this type of beer. In my younger years iw went to Austria on my holidays and i always found these kind of beers for old people. Now i am older and am drinking them! How funny can things go in your life.

This is a hell of a beer in this style to say the least. Today is sunday and the sun is shining if it was summer. It is october though.

Best before march 2012. Poured in an original Franziskaner Weissbierglass. Perfect appearance, could not be better. Cloudy golden yellow fluid with lots of cabonation and a very nice white head, three to four fingers.

Smell is very inviting and like a weissbier should be; fresh and soft, yet crisp. The wheat i very well balanced with the malted barley.

Taste is superbly good amongst his competitors. Soft, round, nice palate. (790 characters)

A: Yow, one of the best looking Hefeweizens I've ever seen. Beautiful creamsicle orange with a fluffy head. Rising carbonation visible at the bottom and pretty vibrant.
S: Super light and fluffy banana. I know that's the yeast giving it it's creamy quality. Smells like a dessert. Very very faint phenols.
T: Wow, that rivals Weihenstephaner. Really good. My only complaint is that it could be slightly sweeter and or flavorful. But otherwise it's nearly perfect. Excellent blend. It's so well blended, I can't really articulate elements of the flavor. It just is.
M: Mild sting. Fairly soft.
O: One of the best hefeweizens I've had. (633 characters)

Nose shows doughy, bready wheat with a hint of baked beans, spicy cloves and a subtle hint of banana.
Nice wheaty flavours, fairly sweet, some cloves but faint. Mild bitterness.

Drank from my Erdinger weizen glass.

A - Woo what a great looking beer. Pours a advocat appearance of hazy lemon honey with a thick white head that stays the distance.

S - Plenty of wheat, clove and banana with some citrus.

T - Nice yeatsy start followed by some decent apricot, lemon and marmalaide flavours. Bana and clove follow with some bubblegum. Very complex.

M - Light to medium body with minmal carbonation

500 ml bottle, BB date says 28. June 2011, into Franziskaner glass. Hazy pale straw with stems of raising bubbles, copious, moussy white head that holds well and sticks to the walls leaving rings and patches of lace as retreats. Aroma is sweet from malted wheat expressed as well baked bread, with mild banana and clove. The flavor is quite sweet initially coating the lips with sticky film of unfermented sugars and gets doughy & bready later on. There's some mild banana and clove although less than I'd expect from a Hefeweizen, and a good amount of powdery yeastiness. The flavor profile is complemented by delicate citrusy tartness from the high carbonation and suspended yeast. Low hoppy bitterness emerges towards the finish which is dry and spritzy thanks to high carbonation. The perception of body is increased by the yeast hanging in suspension so the beer seems nearly medium bodied. (895 characters)

0.5L mug served vom fass with a rich creamy white head, an opaque honey colored selction accompanied by a foot-wide fresh pretzel. The nose is like a mildly intoxicating clove perfume. And your first sip is a shock - should a mere mortal be drinking something this refined, this celestial? Despite the relentless frantic commotion and conversations filling the Braustuberai, time around you slows as you sip this experience. Yes-cloves, nutmeg, pepper, but Frankinsense? Crepuscular rays? The Grail? Unbelievable. Enjoyed fresh at Kloster Andechs - I highly and truly recommend you visit this place. (599 characters)

The beer pours a hazy yellow color with a white head. The aroma is strong bananas and cloves. The flavor is bananas, yeast and cloves. Medium, creamy mouthfeel and medium carbonation. This beer is exactly what I am looking for in a hefeweizen. Awesome. (296 characters)

A- This brew pours a pale golden color with a slight hazy 1st pour and a much denser 2nd pour. There is a sea of boiling microbubbles that support a thick creamy off-white head that laces with each sip.
S- The rich yeasty aroma with a full banana is followed by a hop note and then a clove note comes through and grows as the beer opens up.
T- A mellow white bread dough and yeasty flavor has a soft clove spice quality and a soft dry pils malt note in the background. The finish is a slight tartness with a slight carbonic acid note in that cleans up the finish. A soft green hop note grows into a nice hop snap as it warms.
M- The medium-light mouthfeel has an effervescent carbonation in the finish.
D- This beer has a nice green flavor that is a bit dry and a bit softer than the aroma and less complex, but very drinkable none the less. (904 characters)

a very formal beer... i suppose would call it proper in that it isn't a dessert. good color with a substantial amount of cloudiness. nice yeasty head. nose of mild citrus, and some coriander. palate is on the savory side... or a mild sweet. not smoked but some citrus zest bitter. very very mild sweet. fantastic balance that body and esters come forth in the wheat malt. (371 characters)

A - Hazy golden straw and orange lemon color with a large, pillowy, thick, creamy soapy white color head. Good retention settling into a nice creamy layer of lace.

S - A lot of malted wheat aroma. Some banana and clove, but not as much as other Hefeweizens. Fair amount of lemon and orange citrus. A lot of yeast aroma and some basic herbal/spice aroma.

T - Similar to the nose with a nice wheat and bready malt taste. Strong fruit flavor with golden peach and apricot fruit and some lemon and orange citrus. Slight tartness comes out later along wit a bit of mineral taste. Decent amount of yeast. Banana, clove, and bubblegum are all present, but not as strong as a number of Hefeweizens.

M - On the lighter side of medium body with a good amount of carbonation. Pretty smooth.

D - A very enjoyable beer that isn't quite as bold or strong as some other Hefeweizens. Very easy to drink beer, and I could definitely have another.

Notes: Best before 20/10/10. Overall this is a nice Hefeweizen. It isn't the best beer I've had, but it is solid. Not quite as full or have the spice/fruitiness as most others in the style, but it is there. tasty beer that is worth trying. (1,174 characters)

Another great South German hefe with an ancient tradition.
0.5 l bottle poured in my Weihenstephaner glass.
This particular sample showed 'best before sept. 2010'.

This beer is golden coloured, decent carbonation, fluffy head. Initially clear, it turns into cloudy yellow with orange glow, after pouring the last bit. Nice to watch this process.

Smell is rather mellow. Wheat, banana, a bit of citrus, some herbs.
Taste is similar. It's also mellow bittersweetness all over.
Mouthfeel is extremely smooth. This is a beer that goes down very well. Not a trace of harshness at all, making it very drinkable indeed.

This hefeweizen is well balanced, but also modest in it's aroma and flavours.
I'll surely try a younger version of this beer too, if I get the chance, to see if it makes a more complex experience. (813 characters)

Pours with a billowing pure white head that dies down pretty quickly and leaves a thin residual white head; deeply cloudy vibrant yellowy orange color.

Getting loads of banana in the nose and it is quickly followed by sharper citrus aromas that are a touch sour; cloves and bubblegum-like flavors are definitely present as well.

Not quite the banana bomb as much as in the aroma, but still definitely the dominant flavor followed only by a pretty nice citrus burst and then has a more muted quality around the clove side of things, but it's still there. Fluffy MF, yeasty, bubbly carbonation, really quite good over the palate. This brew is fantastic in drinkability terms, refreshing, tasty, has some nice interesting layers, and is everything a good hefe should be. Great stuff. (783 characters)

Big thanks to Matt for bringing some Andechs love back from Germany. Served this in a pint glass due to limited selection at the parent's house. Label denotes a best before date of February 27th, 2010. I also dug the random factoids about Carl Orff.

A - Three-plus fingers of soapy white foam that dissipates quickly until about a finger and a half are left behind - then it dissipates quite slowly and eventually settles to an attractive thick cap. Not a ton of lace, with just a few spots dotting the glass. Hazed, unfiltered color, that isn't too pale and rests more on the orange side of things than yellow. Gets a little milky near the bottom of the bottle.

S - Intense - it's initially a strong banana and bubblegum sweetness, but as it warms more of the yeast and clove character emerges. Light malted wheat, but not overly sharp - more like fresh sweet bread (as in the Portugese grain product and NOT cow's pancreas). Excellent balance of sweet, starchy, and tangy, with the slightest hint of sour Berliner Weiss flavor starting to creep in.

T - The taste is more wheat-oriented, with a very intense bread character. The finish is light banana, and the aftertaste is fairly clean although it gets a touch yeasty by the end of the 1/2 liter. Thankfully the cloves are in the periphery. Less complex than the aroma, but still quite pleasant.

M - This is overcarbonated (which thankfully is easier to solve than undercarbonation). It makes the beer a bit too harsh and gritty for my liking. The body is a little bigger than most hefeweizen's which helps offset the bubbliness. Dry finish with minimal residual feel.

D - If this were less carbonated it would be one of the best session wheats out there - and would be very similar to the Schneider Weizenhell. It's one of the better German wheats and is worth trying if you're over there, but probably not worth deliberately seeking out with some many other options available. (1,936 characters)
