Since Saint Joseph’s Day on 19 March 1993, Andechs Weissbier Hell has found many new friends. Untreated and bottled in its natural state of yeasty turbidity, this is a top fermented beer for the epicure.

Its light honey colour makes it an immediate eyecatcher. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. At the same time, the creamy, fine pored head invites you to get to know this light Weissbier from the Holy Mountain. You’ll need two takes to enjoy the aromas to the full.

First, distinctive fruity aromas like banana and honeydew melon come to the fore, followed by fine cloves. Andechser Weissbier Hell is a very tangy, refreshing treat with the conviction of a full, soft body. Gold color with a nice apricot tint after u look an inch or so up from the bottom of the glass. Gets murkier as we get towards the top--which I actually like. Smell is sweet upfront with some bready malty aspects. Slight citrus notes as well. Earthy muddy notes with the all familiar banana and clove esters.

Taste is about as smooth as can be. Very similar to the nose--lots more citrus on the palate than the nose. Also good liquid -bread effect. As far as hefes go, this has got to be right up there amongst the best ive tried in the category.

A- Cloudy golden/orange with a fluffy one finger white head. Spotty lacing on the glass.

S- Bananas, bready yeast, cloves. Classic hefe smells.

T- Sweet bananas, lemon, cloves, malty/breadiness. Spot on what a great hefe should taste like.

M- Medium with heavy carbonation. Very clean finish. Easy drinking.

O- This is truly a great beer. Second only to Weihenstephaner For hefe's I've tried

I had a really exciting, but false alarm moment earlier tonight. Thought I saw Andechs doppelbock at a local store! It was, in fact the dunkelweiss bier. Not as good as the almost impossible to get doppelbock, but sitting next to the dunkel was this one. I remember trying it once before and liking it, so I picked it up.

Poured into a small weizen glass, I basically get 2 different-looking beers out of 2 pours. The first pour shows a bright golden beer with very enthusiastic carbonation and decent head. The second one, with the yeast, is a perfect banana-pineapple color with a thick, short head. I love this kind of beer for appearance, very sexy indeed.

Sweet, almost bubble gum banana smells, a little subdued. The spicy clove character is weak in the nose, but seems to come through alright in the taste. Much more hop presence, bitterness in the finish than expected. After some consideration, I really must bump my score up from good to 4.5 for taste. It's not that different from other great German hefes, but right now, for me, it's a nearly perfecet beer.

It's been a long time since I've had a world-class hefeweizen, and this was a real treat. I almost want to give it all 5s. But then I remember Weihenstephaner. And this one still holds up as a fine example of the style. Highly recommended!

Had on tap at the Klosterbrauerei Andechs, served in a 0.5L glass in the bier garten. The beer was hazy golden orange with a thick and creamy foam on top. Actually every beer I tried at the brewery can be described as having a creamy texture to the head. The smell had some banana and clove of course, but in addition I found some fruity esters and fresh bread in the aroma. The taste was peppery and fruity, banana/clove also, and an after-taste I'll describe as buttery. The mouthfeel was thick and filling, creamy texture from the effervescence too. Extremely easy to drink, although it's too filling to rate "5" for drinkability. Excellent beer, and highly recommended.

Appearance: Usual cloudy gold body with a bit of an orange cast to it. Very long-lasting head bolstered by an effervescent carbonation.

Smell: Clove and gently plastic-like phenols over sweet wheat malt.

Taste: Lots of lemon tang at first, followed by clove, banana, and spicy phenolics. Richly flavored. As you progress the lemon fades as the malt builds on your palate and a note of vanilla comes through. Some chalky yeast appears in the finish; which is spicier than many, and drier than some others.

Mouthfeel: Light-medium leaning more towards medium in body; bristling effervescent carbonation.

Overall: Unique, but also a classic example of the style. Absolutely worth trying!

Drank from my Erdinger weizen glass.

A - Woo what a great looking beer. Pours a advocat appearance of hazy lemon honey with a thick white head that stays the distance.

S - Plenty of wheat, clove and banana with some citrus.

T - Nice yeatsy start followed by some decent apricot, lemon and marmalaide flavours. Bana and clove follow with some bubblegum. Very complex.

M - Light to medium body with minmal carbonation

D - In my top three hefes

purchased in a getränkemarkt in Ismaning, Germany; poured into a Weihenstephaner (shhh) .3L glass.

Appearance: nice slightly reddish gold; almost opaque; moderate head but no lace

Smell: wow, more clove and banana than any other that I've had.

Taste: amps up the aromas and adds a hint of citrus and other fruit; light-to-moderate hop bitterness; the flavors sing weissbier.

Mouthfeel: medium balanced by a moderately high level of carbonation.

Drinkability: for hefe lovers, this is really great. To me, the flavors compare to more mundane weissbiers similar to the hop levels in DIPAs compared to the original style.

Beer pours a hazy yellow/gold, just like a hefe should. The smell is just awesome, a really big banana and bubblegum aroma. Taste is great as well, balance between all of your usual hefe elements is perfect and the bubblegum sweetness stands out and gives it something a little unique. Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied and very nice. I had this alongside it much more well-known brother the Doppelbock, and not only was more surprised by this beer, but actually thought it was the better of the two. It's right up there with Live Oak as one of the best hefes I've ever had.

A very nice find indeed, while visiting der Andechser am Dom in Regensburg in September of 2006.

Light orange in color, this Weissbier presented with moderate carbonation, a hazy tinge to it, and a large, pillowy head, for sure. Aromas of big yeastiness, clove and banana fill the sinuses. Good balance on the palate with the fresh-cut grainy malt offering a nice backdrop to that great banana-clove flavour. Slight bitter hoppy twang in the back that was a nice surprise. Very, very nice offering.

fresh bottle delivered straight from Munich...

Hazed straw yellow color, very cloudy, enormous, pillowy white, long-lasting head...looks perfect!

Super fresh aroma! Big banana and orange, with lingering lemon, big and beautiful, airy and invigorating...

Taste: snappy, sparkling, citric, smooth, mellow...lush, lovely malt...lemon, lime and orange lie largest in the flavor...brisk, livley carbonation...refreshing and easy-drinking...definitely downable and downright delicious.

A grittier mouthfeel than many American-made hefe weizens, and a fuller texture...this is the stuff! Not sure if it outshines Weheinstephaner of Schneider Wess...I think it's heavier than them both, more flavorful, without some of the ethereal qualities the finer weizens can boast.

Quite a flavorful number here... big lemon, full malt, not so much spice as you'd taste in others...very full of character and utter panache...there's nothing not to like...yum...so delicious.

Had this on 2013-10-08 in Columbia, PA

A - Pretty cloudy golden-yellow with a 3-finger pillowy white head that fades quickly but leaves nice lace.

S - Bubblegum and clove, yeasty wheat bread, light touch of citrus.

T - More lemon than in the smell, nice assertion of sweet biscuit, clove, a dash of balancing bitterness that relents quickly. Dries nicely leaving a light malty lemon tart flavor for a few seconds.

M - Medium body and carbonation. Effervescent. Substantial at first ultimately refreshing and thirst quenching.

O - This is a delicious beer. I like it as well as any hefe I've ever had.

.5L pour into a weizen glass, Brauhaus Schmitz, Philly.

A- Pale orange with some yellow highlighted edges. Hazy, of course. Big beautiful white head retains at 1/4".

S- Amazing aroma! Huge banana and citrus (orange). Clove and spice come up from behind as well.

T- Some banana and orange. Great spice and clove flavors come in too.

M- Nice and smooth. Great bubbly carbonation, just a bit sparkling.

O- This is a fantastic brew, and I'm glad it has landed in a place in the US near me!

Pale golden color, surprizingly transparent. Crazy carbonation. The bottom of the glass is full of bubbles. Persisten foamy head.

Nice classic hefe aromas: wheat, sweetness and yeast. The taste is what you expect: wheat, fruits (some peach maybe...), some spices, some sweetness, and banana, more in the afteraste. The hops are almost not noticeable. Very smooth mouthfeel, with the neverending head. A dry finish. Very enjoyable and very drinkable. I want more hefe weizen!!!

500 ml bottle acquired as an extra in a trade with RedHaze, thank you very much for providing this great addition to my package, poured into my Chimay goblet tonight

A-Pale golden yellow color that is rather murky, 3/4 inch creamy white head that stuck around for nearly five minutes, some lacing at the beginning

S-Lemon juice, orange peel, wheat, bready malt aromas, black pepper, vanilla, banana, cloves, others spices, and some bubble gum

T-Started off with a crisp wheat taste, then faded into some citrus accents, finish was pretty creamy, got a little breadier as time went on, the spices really took over towards the end, taste was subtle but packed a punch in the aftertaste most of the way through, goes down incredibly easy, sweeter as time went on but still highly drinkable, loved the flavor of this brew

M-Chewy and creamy mouthfeel, good amount of carbonation, thin to medium body, taste did not linger very long, somewhat spicy towards the end

D-Could have drank a few bottles of this, would make a nice session beer, only five and a half percent alcohol, crisp and refreshing, smooth

First beer from Klosterbrauerei Andechs, I am letting that Dopplebock Dunkel sit in my fridge a little longer, would definitely drink again, great for a hefeweizen, recommended

Had this on tap at the Wildeman in Amsterdam. (great bar, by the way).
It pours a cloudy, dark yellow with a fluffy white head that sticks around for a while. Nice lacing. The smell is fruity and crisp and clean. Quite nice. Taste is smooth, sweet, orangy or citrusy, and the mouthfeel is lighter than I expected. Pretty darn good drinkability, but I liked to move onto the doppelbock after one wheat beer.

0.5L mug served vom fass with a rich creamy white head, an opaque honey colored selction accompanied by a foot-wide fresh pretzel. The nose is like a mildly intoxicating clove perfume. And your first sip is a shock - should a mere mortal be drinking something this refined, this celestial? Despite the relentless frantic commotion and conversations filling the Braustuberai, time around you slows as you sip this experience. Yes-cloves, nutmeg, pepper, but Frankinsense? Crepuscular rays? The Grail? Unbelievable. Enjoyed fresh at Kloster Andechs - I highly and truly recommend you visit this place.

The beer pours a slightly hazy, golden tan color with good head retention and considerable lacing. On the nose this is textbook hefe, with clove, light banana, nutmeg and considerable underlying spice. As good as it smells, the beer is considerably better on the palate, with the beer showcasing considerable bread dough, clove, banana, and considerable spice, all on a very dry, sharp "clovey" finish. (I hated this flavor combination when I lived in Germany years ago, but now I just love it). Mouthfeel is medium bodied at most, but it's truly amazing how much flavor this beer packs with such a low abv.

Excellent. One of those hefe's that immediately puts me in mind of my days living in Germany, even though that was almost 40 years ago now.

Pours a cloudy light amber with thick, dense white head, lots of lace down the glass, a half inch of foam sticks around until the end. Smell: very ripe banana, soft slightly grainy sweetness, clove, honeydew. Taste: real banana pudding into clove with some candied lemon-ish acidity, sticky banana mashed on graham cracker finish. Delicious. Extremely fluffy feel, medium body, sweet. If I'm going to go hefeweizen, I think this will be the one.

Another great South German hefe with an ancient tradition.
0.5 l bottle poured in my Weihenstephaner glass.
This particular sample showed 'best before sept. 2010'.

This beer is golden coloured, decent carbonation, fluffy head. Initially clear, it turns into cloudy yellow with orange glow, after pouring the last bit. Nice to watch this process.

Smell is rather mellow. Wheat, banana, a bit of citrus, some herbs.
Taste is similar. It's also mellow bittersweetness all over.
Mouthfeel is extremely smooth. This is a beer that goes down very well. Not a trace of harshness at all, making it very drinkable indeed.

This hefeweizen is well balanced, but also modest in it's aroma and flavours.
I'll surely try a younger version of this beer too, if I get the chance, to see if it makes a more complex experience.

A: Pours a hazy straw color with a white head.
S: Banana, wheat and clove in the nose. Pretty typical of a wheat beer.

T: Banana, clove, bready wheaty malts, wheat, some light fruit. Sounds typical, but it's delicious!

M: Light bodied and smoothish.

O: This is, thus far, my favorite german-style hefeweizen, and I am currently exactly 900 beers into my journey. Definitely recommended to all who like beer.

BB 16/03/06, consumed two months after its suggested BB date--I hope it's alright. Served lightly-chilled in a 500ml weizen glass.

A: slightly hazy, dark orange-yellowish hue, coming with a thick, cotton-ish white beer head with superb retention; gently as well as lively carbonation.
S: a fresh banana aroma abounds, neither too harsh, "stinky", nor floating, plus peach+apricot+ripe Cantaloupe melon; added with a lightly ashy note from the foam, yeast-drink's sour-sweet yeastiness, and candyish malts+refreshing wheat-malts all together. Showing no clear structure, but the combination is really nice and harmonious. Surprisingly there's not much hint of cloves in the aroma. But for a hefe-weizen, the nose is still one of the most complex and enjoyable I've ever encountered...
T: sour-sweet, slightly tangy, fruity flavour abounds upfront, almost like green mango+green banana--balanced and delicious; a stream of cottony-textured, wheat-ish flavour slowly takes over the theme, backed by a profound flavour of yeast drink (like Yakult) that is also closely in check. Dryish and sour-sweet aftertone lingers in the back, leaving some tangy mouthfeel at the deep end of the tongue, like after eating some "green" fruits...
M&D: superb carbonation and creamy soft mouthfeel--I suspect the "overly-maturation" of this beer has done some good to the overall texture? A medium-full bodied hefe-weizen, deserving slow sipping. The strength is in its balance, if I may, and it's certainly one of my favourite botted hefe-weizen for sure. Next time I'll find a bottle within its sell-by date to see if it's any different.

Happy to see this in the states finally.

Served in a Weizen glass, it has plenty of billowing foam, settling to a sturdy head that lasts for the duration of the glass. Flecks of lace appear all around the sides of the glass.

Banana is big at first but tapers off quickly into clovey yeast esters and wheat cereal, with a pleasant sweet floral note as well.

Creamy wheaty feel, light clove spice and banana esters. Carbonation is a little biting at first but tapers off eventually. Clover honey aftertaste. Medium bodied and substantial, though light in feel and easy drinking. Very solid overall with no flaws.

Poured from the bottle into a curved wheat ale glass.

Does not gush or foam very hard on opening, but pours with some aggression makes a super bleach white head that is even pin head bubbled, thick and soapy with thick ring lacing. Body color is a gorgeous and cloudy hue of colors from dully lemon yellow on the bottom to apricot orange through the top. Has a mid haze in the middle with clarity on the edges, and very fine carbonation.

Nose is classic. Spritzy like lemon and drive clove like spices. Some hinting banana senses but more of a balance of spicy and citrus.

Palate comes with classic flavors but a large champagne wet crispness. Not much chewy wheat presence, but great lemon and sharp hop quick dissipating finish. Mild bitterness matching with clove and lemon, and faint toasted white bread just barely breaking out. Light to wet bodied and lots of mimosa like qualities.

It's a little lighter and crisper than most Hefeweizens, but it's very unique and real great tasting. Probably not my favorite in the style but a great one in its own right.

A shade darker than yellow in the glass, cloudy, and topped with a head which retains all the way down. The classic hefeweizen nose is clear; spicy clove, banana, nutmeg, a touch of cinnamon, all working together to make a lovely smell. It continues into the taste, which is phenlicand banana first, then comes the spice, and a touch of vanilla. It's a flaovrdul weiss with much appeal. It's nearly medium bodied yet stays refreshing. Of the four Andechs that I tasted, this, not the Doppelbock, was my favorite.
