Maibock / Helles Bock |  7.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
With its firm, fine pored head, luminous gold and clear gleaming look, it cannot fail to awaken expectations of pure pleasure.

Strong malty nuances and floral hoppiness are imbued with accents of slight fruitiness. Despite its strength, Bergbock is pleasantly mouthcoating, with a powerful, but unobtrusive body. A highly discrete, finely bitter hoppiness transforms into a slight honey sweetness to conclude on a soft, harmonious aftertaste.

A harmonious light bock of character that cannot be put down after the first drink.

500 ml bottle .. flakey silver label... poured into my small goblet. nice enough white head.. fairly clear dark golden brew.. spotty lacing.

Nose is big pale malt with some husky astringency.. pretty proper.

Flavor is pretty nice... the bottle might be a bit old, but I am happy to try this one again.. clean lager with not too much in the way of yeasty notes.

Good bubble and body... I would love to spend some time in Andechs some day... I would be a good student.

A: Golden, clear, medium fading head, not much lacing.

S: Freshly cut suger beet, very agricultural.

T: Slightly cloying sweetness mixed with a sharp peppery boozyness, malty with a slightly doughy finish.

M: Body on the thick side, well carbonated, smooth.

O: A decent bock, anyone expecting layer upon later might be disappointed, but this is what a Helles Bock should taste like.

500ml bottle, poured into a pokal/weizen like glass.

Golden amber colour, very slightly hazy (probably as I use my food fridge), with some carbonation slowly rising. Fairly thick foamy head that dissipated to a thin cap, and some slightly sticky rings on the glass.

Subtle but substantial malt aroma, perhaps a still warm from the oven flapjack smell/slight diacetyl and nuttiness, noble hops sit in the background, some slight citrus.

Full but clean malt flavor, baked-like rather than roasted or toasted and slight diacetyl, backed up by the subtle noble hops.

Pretty high carbonation, but it's quite smooth and has no alch. presence at nearly 7%. This wasn't to my tastes but refreshing in a way for it's maltiness.

Appearance: Clear golden like ginger ale; medium, frothy egg-shell head, long lasting; good lacing

Aroma: malty; slightly grassy; faint hops; slight citrus

Taste: Creamy, malty on start; slight citrus on mid with a hoppy, semi-sweet, "salty" finish; alcohol is pretty noticeable throughout; smooth, but not complex; good, though

Remarks: Did not score A, T, S, M at that time; disregard those scores

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a dimpled pint mug.

Pours a clear golden colour with a small white head.

Smells quite faint, mild alcohol and fruity sweetness.

Tastes nicely balanced, crisp but not overly so. Fairly sweet with a hint of alcohol on the finish.

Overall a pretty nice beer, strength nicely toned down and very drinkable.

Poured into a Mayr's beer mug.

Beautiful ivory fine thick and stable foam that reduces to thin layer after quite a while. Body is a pale yellow with medium carbonation

Subtle smell of hops and pale malts, honey?

This is very clean. Pale malts cover perfectly the elevated abv of this bock beer, better than most others. There is a buttery undertone. Bitterness comes very late into the game, almost when you think it is already done.

Body seems quite thin in the beginning but then there is a buttery feel just the moment you swallow it down that covers tongue and palate. It has enough carbonation to make it mildly refreshing which is scary at the given abv.

I am neither a big fan nor an expert in the field of Helles Bockbier, but I enjoy the clean taste of this and the fact that the alcohol is so well hidden. It tastes like a Munich Helles with elevated malt sweetness and abv, but I guess this is just what the style is about. I will keep researching this style.
