Maibock / Helles Bock |  7.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
With its firm, fine pored head, luminous gold and clear gleaming look, it cannot fail to awaken expectations of pure pleasure.

Strong malty nuances and floral hoppiness are imbued with accents of slight fruitiness. Despite its strength, Bergbock is pleasantly mouthcoating, with a powerful, but unobtrusive body. A highly discrete, finely bitter hoppiness transforms into a slight honey sweetness to conclude on a soft, harmonious aftertaste.

A harmonious light bock of character that cannot be put down after the first drink.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a dimpled pint mug.

Pours a clear golden colour with a small white head.

Smells quite faint, mild alcohol and fruity sweetness.

Tastes nicely balanced, crisp but not overly so. Fairly sweet with a hint of alcohol on the finish.

Overall a pretty nice beer, strength nicely toned down and very drinkable.

Poured into a Mayr's beer mug.

Beautiful ivory fine thick and stable foam that reduces to thin layer after quite a while. Body is a pale yellow with medium carbonation

Subtle smell of hops and pale malts, honey?

This is very clean. Pale malts cover perfectly the elevated abv of this bock beer, better than most others. There is a buttery undertone. Bitterness comes very late into the game, almost when you think it is already done.

Body seems quite thin in the beginning but then there is a buttery feel just the moment you swallow it down that covers tongue and palate. It has enough carbonation to make it mildly refreshing which is scary at the given abv.

I am neither a big fan nor an expert in the field of Helles Bockbier, but I enjoy the clean taste of this and the fact that the alcohol is so well hidden. It tastes like a Munich Helles with elevated malt sweetness and abv, but I guess this is just what the style is about. I will keep researching this style.

A: Pours with a very tall white, but slightly yellowish head. The head is a bit uneven and sets rather quickly as the clear golden liquid rises. Lots of small bubbles in it. Some faint lacings.

S: Rich malt, honey-sweet and slightly roasted - bready, almost doughy. Citric from floral hops and some bitter hops to complement it. Grassy.

T: Sweet malt, bready and slightly roasted. Still a bit doughy, but not in an unpleasant way. Grass and herbs, it tastes like spring. Some hidden bitter hops.

M: Long sweet and bready aftertaste. Full body and rather rich in carbonation, but not offensive.

O: Well, it looked kind of crappy, but then it turned and my high expectations came true. A very nice Maibock.

A: Golden with a decent white head.

S: Sweet malts, grass and grain.

T: Delicious! The typical grassy, herbal Helles flavours blend beautifully with a malty, caramel sweetness.

M: Medium-carbonation - slightly watery.

This is the first Maibock I've tried and it came as a complete surprise - I was expecting a variation on a normal Helles, but this really is an altogether different beer. It's the perfect blonde lager for anyone who loves Doppelbocks.

Glass: Ayinger willi glass

Pours a 3cm, beige-colored head, fades to a thick ring around the glass with some islands of foam atop the body. As the head fades, minimal lacing is left. Body is a transparent burnt orange in color,

Aroma is sweet, of honey and mild caramel/toffee, with a slight herbal backdrop. Good, not particularly deep or complex, but enjoyable.

Taste is malty, sweet, honey-like with slight herbal, mint-like flavor. Slightly biscuit-like, grain-like, and caramel-like flavors. Slight European hop bitterness arrives at end of mid-palate, lasting through finish. Aftertaste of residual sweetness, some honey, slight bitterness. Flavor is good, but could be bolder and more complex, have more interplay.

Medium to medium-heavy in body, with ample, but gentle carbonation. Result is a foamy mouthfeel with a dry finish and some residual stickiness.

A slightly above average maibock, but its lack of availability is nothing to be concerned about - some locally available beers are comparable or more satisfying.

500ml Bottle received in trade with Phyl21ca - thanks!

Appearance - Clear gold colour with an average size fizzy white coloured head. There is an above average amount of carbonation showing and there isn't much lacing. The head lasted for 2-3 minutes.

Smell - Breads/grains, grassy/herbal, corn, caramel

Taste & Mouth - There is a below average amount of carbonation and I can taste corn mixed with some grainy/herbal notes. There is also a bit of a grassiness and some buttery/caramel flavours mixed with some light hops. It ends with a buttery grainy aftertaste.

Overall - Mouthfeel needs some work but the beer has a nice flavour. The highlight is probably the scent. Good for the style but not something I'd be on the look out for in the future.

Bottle: Poured a clear bright golden color helles with a large pure white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of solid floral malt notes with light sugar notes and some light buttery notes. Taste is also a mix between some floral malt with quite sweet malt backbone with light buttery notes which are more or less pleasant. Body is full with somewhat of an oily texture with good carbonation. Interesting and easily drinkable though not sure such alcohol level is required and the buttery notes are a bit strong for my taste buds.

Thanks to Thirstybird for the opportunity to try this one. 500ml bottle served at 49 degrees in a pilsener glass. 02 05 12 indicated on the back label (I'm assuming this is a consume before date). Pours a translucent yellow-gold with a creamy, one inch bright white head. Tiny bubbles present in-solution effervesce to the underside of the cap. Head eventually disperses into a semi-conisstent skim - some spots of lacing, but no legs. Nose expresses fruity esters, a light grassiness and the merest suggestion of yeast. Taste follows nose - flavor profile is not at all cloying like some Maibocks in my experience. There's a really pleasant balance in the malt profile, light fruitiness and a crisp, unassuming hops character. Mouthfeel is light in body with an even and consistent carbonation and a kiss of acidity at the finish to cleanse the palate. Overall, a really solid brew - perhaps a little past its prime; perhaps not. That said, very pleasant and balanced without asserting itself too much. I'd love to try this beer on-draft.

Poured from a 0.5L bottle, expires Dec. 21st...

Appearance: Beautiful honey gold with a fluffy 2 finger head. Lacing is gradual but minimal.

Smell: Sweet bready malts are easily noticable with minor yeast and hop balance.

Taste: The ABV is slightly noticeable in the taste but the flavoring hides it well. Flavors of both bitter and sweet to balance it out with many pairings.

Mouthfeel: Clean and crisp carbonation leaves it refreshing while not overbearing or boring.

Overall: All around top notch beer for it's style. Having tried all of the Andechs beers I can guarantee you that any of their styles will not stray far from exemplary. I did not happen to see this one on tap when I was there though. Regardless, the Kloster Andechs is a beer connoisseurs Mecca!!! Prosit!!!

500ml bottle

A- Golden colour with some orange hints if held through light. Medium and nicely tight head that shows scarce retention and leaves very litlle lacing on the glass

S- Very sweet bready malts, mixed with a fresh wet-grass feel from the hops. A slight hint of citrus on the back. Can't say how but the aroma has a syrup character to it

T- Can I just copy and past the smell part? Sweet bready malts, a fresh and almost not bitter at all herbal feel from the hops. Then some light hints of lemon and a faint spiciness from the esters. Still can't say how, this beer feels quite like syrup even in the taste

M- Smooth with a not so big body for the ABV. Carbonation is quite low, maybe this is why the beer feels oily

O- Highly refreshing for the ABV and an easy drinker. There is no complexity at all though

Appearance - 3.5
Pours two fingers of white, tightly packed foam head that steadily reduced to to a thin, patchy layer over the pale, straw yellow body.

Smell - 4.0
Herbal and lemony hops with fresh baked white bread. Very clean aroma, though the higher alcohol content is noticeable.

Taste - 4.0
Proof that a beer of nearly 7% alcohol by volume can actually be refreshing. Lots of bready, dusty German malt flavour balanced with just enough hop bitterness and flavours of lemon and herbs, with plenty of peppery alcohol in the finish.

Mouthfeel - 4.0
Light to medium bodied and lightly carbonated, very smooth to drink.

Drinkability - 3.5
Not something I would seek out again, but I think this beer is possibly too drinkable for its own good at 6.9%abv.

OVERALL - 3.85
This is a good beer that doesn't quite fit into any style category. I think the closest match is a modern, Munich style Oktoberfestbier, although it is a little too strong. Calls itself a bock, but it's too light to be even a Maibock and is as strong as some doppelbocks. Regardless, a top quality, drinkable if unexciting strong lager.

Straw golden-yellow with a shimmering head that quickly dissipates. Strong lemon fragrance and a bouquet of meadow flower honey from the mountain. Sweet, crisp grains blend smoothly with the light bitterness of the hops. Lemon flavors take their turn at the end. yummm funny that the alcohol doesn't make its self more known - but i like it. a very good mouthfeel as always with bayern lagers. really good drink, probably going to taste really good with a boulette.
Prost!

Poured into a pilsner glass.

Pours golden with a bit of an orange tint to it. The initial head was quite a few fingers high, though it died down somewhat quickly without really leaving any lacing. A bit of a light head around the edges. Nose is some mild grain with a bit of light fruit and cream. Flavor is slight grain and some very mild brown. A tiny bit of toffee. Light feel with low to medium carbonation. Drinks pretty well, especially considering the 6.9% ABV.
