By bottle spelt the 'Hell' without the e-s on the end. Gloing blonde appearance, looks beautiful. Honeyed, floral aroma, some grassyness and bread dough. Nicely herbal, floral, honeyed flavour, nice full mouthfeel and satisfying bitterness. really love the subtlety of the Andechser beers, so soft aswell, lovely.

Pours gold with a fading head.
Nose shows soft hay, bready malt, wheat, honey, spicy hops and faint vegetal notes. Restrained.
Similarly light flavours, but mainly focussing on hay and honey. Some very faint spicy hops. Low bitterness.
Body could use more carbonation.

Poured on tap at Churchkey into a snifter.

Super creamy white head, two fingers tall and not going anywhere. Body is clear with a very pale straw lemon body. Light and bright and big impressive.

Nose is of classic pilsner malt and muted grass hop. Mellow and dense, bready almost thick.

Palate is quite interesting for a Helles. Lots of thick malt, bread dough, and crackers strangely to round out the thicknesses. Baked white bread on the finish and mild hop herbality. Potato chip and thick crunch in the palate with a wheat like chewy quality to mouthfeel is strangely a lot lighter than anticipated and borderline wet.

Overall though the palate makes up for it for a very unique tasting helles.

Poured into a Schaumburger pilsner glass. Pours a light golden amber with a half finger white head with good retention due to active carbonation, no lacing. Aroma of bready with hints of biscuit malt, grassy hops and lemon. Flavor is slightly sweet bready malt, grassy, slightly peppery hops, light citrus and a touch of wheat. A nice, lingering light lemon, hop and malt aftertaste to the finish. Light to medium bodied with good carbonation. A light, pleasant helles lager that hits all the right notes. Flavor is not intense, but appropriate for the style. A very nice beer for drinking with a meal for non intrusive malt and hops. Addendum: the subtle, but well balanced flavors in this really grew on me as I drank the glass.

Brown 0.5 litre bottle obtained in Berlin (Ambrosetti beer store) and flown home with another 9 different beers. Six months life left according to the label.

Poured into a 0.5 litre 'Schultheiss' glass, my third German beer during a German tasting evening.

Bright and light (a typical Helles attribute), a pale golden, straw yellow colour. The white head soon fell away to leave a thin collar and scummy wisp.

Aromaless, couldn't even find a hop or hint of yeast, no floral wiff, no wheaty undertones or overtones, not even some malt esters, just 'nowt'. My normal lager/pilsner score of 3 then!

Fresh and crisp, but no body or depth of flavours, easy to drink but nothing to grasp and say 'Wow' about. There is a little feel of yeast, hops and malts within the taste, sadly not enough to make this beer stand out from the crowd.

A bog standard Helles, I was expecting more from such a well thought of brewery.

Pours a very pale straw color, very crystal looking, not much head and what there is of fades very quickly, no lacing on the glass.

Smell starts with a sweet malt kick and then follows up with a bit of an herbal grassy note.

Taste is quite straight forward and very much in the vein of a lager, simple sweet malt front with a mild hop balance, picking up a bit of a lemony zest flavor as well, quite crisp with a semi-dry finish.

Glad to have Andechs finally in the states but it's their doppelbock I've been waiting for!

Drank from my Erdinger weizen glass.

A - Pours a classic lager colour with a frothy white head that retains reasonably well but no lacing.

S - Plenty of grainy malts present and some floral aromas, a little yeast as well.

T - Plenty of grain up front followed by some light citrus and hop, a little bread as well, nice residual sugars that allow a crisp finish.

M - Light to medium body and carbonation.

O - A very good sessionable beer.

A - Light clear golden color with about an average sized, light, bubbly, foamy, white head. A little below average retention with no lacing left, but a lot of bubbles coming up.

S - A lot of grainy and bready malt. Fair amount of mineral aroma along with some grassy and floral hops. Very nice grainy/bready lager that is fairly well hopped.

T - Starts out with a grainy/bready malt, typical of the style. Mid sip a good amount of mineral taste along with some light citrus and honey flavors. I found it to provide a nice little tang and contrast to the sweet bready malt. A touch of grassy hops are also present. It finishes with more of that bready malt flavor, but the flavors from mid sip (especially the citrus) linger.

M - Light starting to go toward medium body with a healthy amount of carbonation. A light spritzy refreshing feel.

D - Very drinkable beer. Well balanced flavors with plenty of grain/bread malt flavors and a fair amount of hops and other flavors to give it some balance and add interest. Very refreshing drink.

Notes: Best before 18/10/10. A nice summer time beer that has a fair amount of hops for the style. Also had a somewhat strong mineral taste, which I thought was fine, but it depends on taste. I would gladly drink a couple of these on a nice warm, sunny day. Didn't quite blow me away or strike me as world class, but rather a solid example of the style.

The head is made of big almost transparent bubbles. Lots of bubbles in the glittering golden transparent body. The smell is grainy and reveals lots of lemon.

The taste is very grainy, with hints of citrus, and light hints of dry caramel. Hoppiness is bitter and astringent. The body is pretty light, the mouthfeel is thick and hoppy on the end. Kind of disappointing for Andechs: not much going on, and not a very drinkable beer.

I tasted this 500ml bottle on 19.12.07 (Best by 24.07.08). I brought this back from a recent trip to Munich.
Poured a clear amber brew with good carbonation and modest head.
Smelled very subtle; floral hops and possible a hint of apple.
The taste was also somewhat subdued; I think I still detected a hint of apple here also.
There is nothing in this beer to be offensive to anyone; its flavours are subdued and delicate. A very nice beer to drink.

Growler at home. Don't ask me how (I have no clue), but kegs of this (and other Andechser beers) showed up in Portland for PIB. I missed PIB, but seeing that this went on tap at the Belmont Station, I couldn't say no.

A clear golden/straw yellow with a dense, white head that falls off to a ring, leaving some lacing, this looks decent for a Helles. The nose, OTOH, is excellent. Soft, doughy, limpid and airy, this is delicately hoppy (lemon) with some cotton candy malt character. Ridiculously clean.

The palate opens with a perfect level of hops - mildly pungent and oily with lemon and lingering mint. Malt character is light but flavorful with dough, cotton candy, a touch of straw and hay. Light in body but with a crisp and creamy carbonation, this is great on the palate. Particularly pleasant is the body that the hop oils and the husky/grainy malt character adds. Excellent stuff, highly recommended.

500ML BOTTLE POURED INTO MY ZIRNDORFER SEIDEL

A - Golden lager body, 3 finger head that dissapate quickly to leave a crown. Rubbish lacing. lively beading

S - faint notes of grain, fresh grass, no real hop profile here.

T - grassy, some fresh dry hoppiness in the finish. Nothing exciting though at all. Not enough munich malt.

M - Medium carbonation, a little sticky and flat.

D - The third Of the Andechs beers i have had, and another one to be disappointed in. Pretty lifeless. Will need to try at the source.
Starting to think Andechs isnt the Holy Grail.

BB 28-03-06. Great presentation with wonderfull lasting head and a light golden crystal clear beer. Nose is very clean and veryy nicely hopped with prob best Halletauhops. Good and not overdone maltyness with some alcohol and minimal yeast influence. Good taste also having good malts, litle alcohol and nice hoppiness.Yes one of the better Helles I know. Good carbonisation and mouthfeel. Well drinkable and one you like to have more of after the last.

Appearance: Straw-gold; clear; effervescent; big head

Aroma: Malty; citrusy; floral; slight honey

Taste: Juicy malt, with smooth, slightly bitter finish; very good, and would be a good session beer

Remarks: Did not score A, T, S, M at that time; disregard those scores

A - Pours a bright, pale gold, with a frothy white head. This falls to a thin cap. Some small bubbles and a few streamers slowly rise.

S - Floral hops, green vegetables, sourdough bread, honey, light nuttiness.

T - The vegetable flavour and sweet malts are upfront. These fade out and the honey and floral hops move forward towards the finish along with the bread. It ends with a sharp bite of carbonation and a relatively short, sweet aftertaste.

M - Cleansing carbonation throughout. Light-medium crisp body.

D - Whilst not the best offering from this brewery, it's still enjoyable. Worth a try.

On tap in The Porterhouse

Pours with a lemony yellow body, patchy white head with good retention, some lacing down the glass

Smell, fresh hops, lavender, some noticable floral notes. Little bit of biscuity malt lingering in the background

Taste, crisp floral hops, smooth mouthfeel, some malt in the background. Some sweetness, little bit of dry hop character on the finish

A refreshing and flavourful lager

Pretty solid helles, but it's easily overshadowed by the other offerings from Andechs.
This review is based on a mug I got at the Am Dom hall in Munich. The monastery alternates this with their spezial, so this may or may not be available depending on the time of year.
Comes straight from a gigantic wooden keg. It has a nice golden yellow color. Although not the darkest or foamiest helles around...it's on par for the style.
Smell is husky grain and hops. Actually more hops that you might expect. It's no pils, but it's more potent than most.
Flavor starts off with a sweet malt hit, turns to a husky grain, and finishes with a sharp hops hit that fades quickly.
It's pretty thin, as you might expect from the style. This is a warm weather quencher even by Munich standards.
Drinkability is high on this one. Stylistically, obviously, but also because of the nice really dry finish. After taking a sip you'll get that hop hit and you'll want more.

It is what it is. It's an excellent helles, but if your trip to Munich is a short one, I'd recommend one of the other Andechs beer instead. It's on par with the better Munich helles brews you'll find in town. There are better and there are worse. The main thing about it that's really unique is the dry, hoppy finish. In an area where you actually have to hunt for a pils, this can fill your hop craving nicely, though.

EDIT: On my visit from 6/11 I found this one wasn't really doing it for me. The hop notes weren't as pronounced and the nose was a hair sulfuric. It was my first beer in Munich, so maybe I was a little off and not the beer? At the same time, it's bigger brother, the Spezial hell turned out to be quite the treat. It's worth trying them both since I know either can be amazing depending on your mood.
