This like Edgefield is one of the McMenamins top properties. My grandmother was an Eastern Star lady so I drink here on trips to Salem and remember her.

But it is a really neat place to spend the night. That way you get a chance to try out several of the quirky bars on the property. And also fill you Mason jar befoer you head up to your room for the evening.

When I changes jobs a few years ago, my staff scheduled my party here. I got a big room and they got the basement meeting hall. We had a couple of kegs including -- yes, Terminator. The staff were great and the food for the party was grand.

The next morning we had a great farm breakfast and fortified oj. Pretty good memories of the good friends and employees and the beer.

I have been to most of the McMenamins establishments and this one is still my favorite. Maybe it is the beautiful old building or the the quaintness and also grandeur of it all or the service or the great brews and food or crazy (all puns intended) history of the the place or maybe something else, but I have always loved this place.

The beers, as with all of the McMenamins, are top notch....And when you need to bring the wife along, you can drop her off at the spa and enjoy a couple of brews. What more can you ask for?

I've been going to the McMenamins Grand Lodge since it opened in 2000 (and before, with my grandfather), and it remains my favorite McMenamins location. Although the grounds aren't as big as, say, the Edgefield, the gardens, lawns, and buildings are fantastically well crafted. After all, the Grand Lodge was built for aging and sick Masonic Masters and their families. The interior of the buildings is in line with that particularly and immaculately designed McMenamins style. The rooms are spacious, and well worth the price (they get you full access to the facilities as well, I believe). The movie theater is very comfortable and convenient. The Grand Lodge is great place to visit.

As for the restaurant, it's usual McMenamins (which is great) quality, with a few amazing items. The service is punctual, professional, and friendly, to boot. I recommend almost anything on the menu.

The Grand Lodge also hold a regular concert series in both the summer and winter, outside and inside respectively. The concerts are always lots of fun, and a great place to go with friends and family.

my girlfriend was checking out pacific university so we decided to make a stop afterwards at the ironwork grill at the grand lodge. the ambience is pretty cool. some folk like pictures on the wall, tons of mason symbols ( it is an old mason retirement home), and just a real comfortable feel. real down to earth and relaxed but with a touch of something else. the beer selction is typical of the chain. good beers but nothing crazy to write home about. enjoyed a couple of samplers with my buddy while my girlfriend had some ruby ales. the coolest thing about the place i think is the working tub/shower combo in the mens room...i wonder how many beers it takes to put that into some use....?

I took my girlfriend here for two nights for her birthday. I purchased the Hammerhead package, which included dinner and the next morning's breakfast each night.

The atmosphere, look and feel of the Grand Lodge, like all McMenamin's properties wows the visitor. Upon entering we were astounded at the amount of antiques and artist created patterns, designs and decorations around the entire building. We each purchased a drink (I had an Irish Stout and she had a glass of their Edgefield Pinot Gris) and explored the grounds of the property. The grounds of the lodge includes around 4 bars (Doctors Office Bar, Bob's Bar, the bar in the lobby and the one in the Yardhouse restaurant). The selection of beers, which I was told are brewed at the McMenamins' Lighthouse location in Lincoln City, OR, are as varied as I expected. The seasonal Working Man's Red, Irish Stout, a wheat, and the year round selections of terminator stout, hammerhead pale ale, Ruby fruit beer, and IPA were on tap in the lobby's main bar, but the other bars only truly offered selections from the year 'round beers. Budweiser and PBR were the guest taps, so nothing overly adventerous, or worthy of this reviewer's excitement there.

The menus in the two restaurants differ enough to cause us to eat in each one once. The Yardhouse Pub and Restaurant featured barbecue and related faire like hush puppies and corn bread. The restaurant in the hotel had a few steaks on the menu along with their signature 'stuffed burgers,' and both were of nice, pub quality selections. I really enjoyed the hummus plate.

Overall, the selections were about what was expected. The service was always helpful from a mature, and surprisingly well educated and informed, friendly staff. We had an excellent conversation with a bartender while - shhh - sampling the house wines. We really enjoyed ourselves in relation to the food and atmosphere of the place, and, although I find the house beers to be on the generally bland side, I'll ok craft beer over macro products any day of the week. This is a place to visit if you're looking to get away a little and enjoy the beer without over concentrating on it, very much like a resort, and Kristen also took the chance to allow me to buy her a masage there in the hotel.

We finally ventured out to the Grand Lodge to catch a movie and enjoy some beer and pub food. We didn't build in enough time to explore everything, but we managed a look around before and after the movie.

The lodge itself is very reminiscent of a grand tourist hotel like the one on Lake Yellowstone. The decor is much different though, adorned with hand painted murals, funky pieces from salved furniture, and some of its own branded logos. The details of the place have all been thought of, and the whole place is in very nice shape.

There's a semi-formal restaurant downstairs, several bars on premise, a pool hall, theater, and disc golf course, so there's plenty to do. We were there for the theater, which is the least comfortable of the 4 we've been to. The hall that houses the theater is decorated with some subtle masonic themes, and its quite attractive, but due to the somewhat limited space, more traditional office-style chairs and folding tables were used. They aren't as comfortable as the old mixed collection at Kennedy School or the regular theater seats at Bagdad or Mission.

The beer I had was slightly better than I've had it at other locations, so I was pleased by that. However, the food service was somewhat curt, and didn't include condiments or napkins. Plus, one youngster told us that the founder's favorite beer is Budweiser, which sort of soured the mood. I hope its just a dirty rumor.

The food was fairly standard pub faire, but the beer selection at the theater was pretty limited, and two of the four taps were just not for consumption (Ruby and Bud). I'd had my heart set on an IPA, but made due with a pale. Which was pretty good anyway.

I'll have to visit again to get more of the experience. This place doesn't fit into an evening easily, so multiple visits, or a whole day may be required.
