I had out of a bottle at The Diamond in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
A- It's got a nice clay red/brown color with bold head and lacing.
S- Smells like burnt wood.
T- It's very smokey. Beautifully smokey. It has a baconish after taste, similar to Aecht Schlenkerla. Crisp with some spiciness. One of the finest beers I've had.

On draft at the Memphis Taproom.

Pours a dark burnt orange/ copper mahogany color with pale golden orange hues when held to a light source and a 1.5 finger frothy off-white head that slowly settles into a thin lasting ring. Sporadic spots of lacing left behind.

Beautiful smokey arms with hints of charcoal, BBQ, campfire, subtle butane, bacon and ash. UnserneTh there is a sweet caramel malt presence that is a little toasty in the nose. While very smokey it's not over the top or too intense.

Medium bodied with a crisp spice and hop presence up frot that complimentsthe smokey notes very well. Hints of cinnamon and brown sugar along with sweet toasted caramel malt. This beer is very well balanced and while the smokiness is there it isn't one dimensional and the other flavors are evident. Smokey hints of charcoal, ash, BBQ bacon and butane. The smokeynpresence becomes more prominent as the beer eRma but overallthis beer is very well balanced and easy to drink. Recommended!

The beverage is clear and brown, rather dark brown, a beige rather small head, little lacing. Some curtains.

The smell is earthy, wet concrete, dust, stable. Faintly sweet dried fruits. Old figs and raisins.

The taste is sweet, plums and brown sugar, acidity, sour milk, bitter almond.

Low carbonation, small bubbles, smooth, dry finish.

I am a bit baffled, no smoke at all, and a bit stale.

Best before 05.10.10 - wonder if that is October or May?

Pours a brown/red clear liquid with a slightly off-white coloured, fizzly head that dies down pretty quick, leaving a thin lid on the beer.

Smells of smoky leather, lightly of roastd almonds. I get a wooly aroma as well as smoked sausages, but not as forcefully as it's usually in smoked beers.

Taste is elegant, really tasteful use of smoked malts here, a light sheep-wool together with hard leather and an ever so light hint of smoked meat. I find it really interesting how they succeed in making these tastes that are'nt really smoky, but still very unique, and clearly here because of the smoked malts. Finishes quite light with near to no bitterness, a little watery actually.

Mouthfeel is light and fresh, with fizzly and fitting carbonation.

50 cl brown short-necked stubby bottle with an old-looking beige/yellow label. Writing in red and brown.

A: Pours deep copper, with an large creamy off-white head. The slow dissipation leaves rich spiderweb-like lacings.

S: Sweet malt and butter. Smoked ham.

T: Ham galore. Spices and malt. Hazelnuts.

M: Long, really long aftertaste, sweet and bitter. Even the ham lingers. Body is medium to full and carbonation is moderate.

D: A really interesting beer. It's obviously a Märzen but it got Rauchbier-influences. If you're not into Rauchbiers, but want to learn. Start off with this one.

On-tap from the brewery

A-Deep dark brown in color, nearly too dark/thick to let any light through. If it had any head when poured, it didn't last long, but it left a rich almond-colored lace around the edge of the glass.

S- Toffee is the most prominent aroma. No noticeable smoke. Pretty standard Marzen smell, milder than expected if anything.

T- Carmel and nuts from the roasted malt hit your first, with equal amounts of stewed dark fruits filling in the middle(prunes and chocolate). Smoke finishes it off it an extremely complementary manner. The smoke really blances the whole thing out. If there were no smoke, this beer would almost be overly sweet, but the smoke makes it truly delicious.

M- Medium-full bodied(definitely closer to full). Moderately carbonated with a pleasant bite. Carbonation really spreads the flavors around.

D- Highly drinkable. If the brauhaus wasn't closing, I would have stuck around and had a few more of these. They were really tasty.

Overall, top beer in Bamberg and I will seek it out here in the states(cross my fingers)

Appearance: Spezial Rauchbier Märzen pours a rufous colour along with a thick, decently high (approx 1½ ") and almost gelatinous crown of a buff tone. Secondly, the crown in question is slowly reduced to a thin layer while leaving a great amount of lacing. Additionally, almost no carbonation is visible.

Smell: Intensively malty, caramel malt to be precise. Some diacetyl gives it a butterscotch-like note, some characteristics of charcoal-grilled meat manage to pop up in the back, at times it could be interpreted as Brauerei Spezial's trademarked "smoked ham"-malt. You also get some bread-like maltiness in the way of Swedish wortbread, which includes a tad of clove (both here and on its own) as well, but that's more in the far end of things.

Taste: Damn! Here there be ham, really pronounced in it's ham 'n' wortbread-mix here, but more on the sweet end than of what's being presented in the smell. Heck, even some blueberry may be traced along the way!

Continually, the diacetyl is way more clandestine here, while a sour -- and to a slightly lesser extent -- caramel-like tone has taken its place. The truly burnt characteristics do however stay in the back and does not show up until the end (that is to say the "aftertaste").

Mouthfeel: Creamy in viscosity yet it manges to transform it into a feeling of dry- and coarseness. The carbonation is way more alert than one where to expect. However, this does not mean it's merely as alert as to be considered high, but medium-high, nonetheless.

Drinkability: Just because it's a brew from Brauerei Spezial, don't expect it to be a Rauchbier -- 'cause it's not! Believing that will simply leave you disappointed. What it is however is a Märzen with some incorporated smoked-sensation, something it is does one helluva job achieving! Finally, for all you Swedes out there: who amongst you wouldn't reckon this to be the ultimate Yule-beer (in terms of representing the seasonal food in terms of taste and smell aplenty)?

Had this in the beer garden in Bamberg.
Though the appearance is uncertain due to the mug, it looked to be more dark amber than most dunkels with a huge creamy head.
The light smoke taste did not hinder the malty sweetness and nicely balanced hop notes. The mouthfeel got more complex as the beer warmed and the taste complemented the brats and kraut that I enjoyed on a perfect summer evening. The beer finished dry and the complex taste lingered between each sip. I would say that I had at least 30 different beers on tap in my last visit to Germany and this was my favorite. A must stop if you are in Franconia.

Dark brown to reddish with a small size tan head and some good lace.

Smells sweet and malty with a very subtle but unmistakable touch of smoke, and a delicate hop note.

There is a bit more weight to the taste, which again is pretty sweet and malty and has a pronounced smoky character. Aftertaste combines a slightly roasted bitterness with a malty sweetness and the rawness of the smoke. A delicate trace of hops turns this into a perfectly satisfying experience.

A smooth mouthfeel and a lovely tingling carbonation please the mouth.

More Märzen than Rauchbier qualities to this beer. Pretty good!

A- Dark and opaque, almost black but not quite.
S- Not terribly aromatic, which surprised me (especially for a Rauchbier). Some sweet molasses wit a hint of smoke, but you really need to get you nose into the mug to pick any of it out. (Disclaimer: it's quite smoky in the pub, so this likely affected my ability to pick up on the aroma).
T- Dark roasted malt hits your palate first, with a touch of semisweet chocolate. Next the sweet malt body of the beer hits just for a second before the smoke kicks in. It's not overbearing by any means; to the contrary, the smoke and roast flavors seem to work together, leading the way to a nice hop finish with strong bitter coffee tones.
M- Full-bodied with adequate but not overbearing carbonation. Body lies somewhere between a Schwarzbier and a Doppelbock.
D- Very drinkable considering it blends two styles--Rauchbier and Bockbier--that traditionally aren't very drinkable.

Overall: What a delicious beer. Possibly my favorite while in Bamberg. It's really great how the roast malts work with the smoked malt (as American brewers, who favor smoked porters, have apparently figured out). While I don't mean this to be a slam on Schlenkerla (brewer of the most widely-distributed German Rauchbier), I think newcomers to the style would be less put off if they tried this instead of the sweeter Rauchbier from Schlenkerla. Now if only I didn't have to travel seven time zones to try it...

Fantastic brew had in Bamberg at the brewery.
This beer looked great. But really all beirs in Germany looked great. Had a very malty sweet aroma to it. The taste complimented the smell. A sweet malty flavor that of a very good Marzen but this one had the unique smoky finish. Very full mouthfeel, better than most. Supprisingly easy to drink. I would have had more if less people were smoking.

Appearance: Practically opaque ruby red, decent amount of greyish head dancing on top.

Smell: Peaty, smokey and totally earthy. It reminded me both of a mink farm and home-smoked bacon. Some fruity esters in there and just a smedge of hops made this fantastic stuff indeed.

Taste: Not an aggressively smokey taste, the malt is solid, fruity and chewy which complements the peated flavors quite well. Hops also play a supporting role, as the astringency is definately hoppy and not ashy as can be found in other smoked Beers. A well balanced Beer from start to finish.

I purchased this at the brewery, 0.8 Euro!

A: Ruby/merlot, off-white head, a little retention and lace.

S: Dark caramel with some smoke & spice.

T: Sweet caramel up front, smokey, peppery spice in the finish. The smoke helps to balance & round-out the Marzen sweetness.

M: Moderate body and carbonation.

D: It's a little on the smokey side... but nothing like their town rival (Schlenkerla).

Cheers to Mike from Milly's for letting me know about this gem of a brauhaus in Bamberg! And cheers to Katie for picking me up a couple bottles when I was prematurely sent home on a string of bad luck.

This märzen pours a beuatiful light brown color with a nice filtered clear-ness, or something, to it. Poured in somewhat of a narrower stein than is probably appropriate, there was lots and lots of thick, tan head that just lingers and lingers.

As for smell, I detect most porminently that malty sweetness typical to märzens. However there does exist as well a very slight smoky aroma.

The taste, though, ohhh the taste! I love me my rauchbiers and this one did not disappoint. It tastes like meat. Meat, meat, and more meat. Smoky flavor lingers like scotch in the back of your throat.

It's hard for me to detect too many other flavors going on here cause I just love that smokiness. But overall, it's actually a very smooth rauchbier and would be great for a first journey into the style. Sometimes, I would prefer something a little starker, but this is great.

Would I have another? Hell, I'd drink these all night.

Sampled from bottle at the brewery.

This märzen poured a dark, chestnut brown with tan foam that settled but clung to the glass. The smell was nicely malty and bready. The taste was slightly sweet and tangy malty with some caramel and a hint of chocolate. The mouthfeel was crisp and slightly sweet up front but dry overall. The body was medium with good, tingly carbonation. This was a very nice and enjoyable märzen.

This beer was quite a dark amber in color, it in fact looks dark brown if not held up to the light. The first taste in my mouth was a malty sweetness, and I almost thought where is the smoke. The smoke then asserted itself just after the initial maltiness. This beer is not as strongly smoky as some, and personally I wouldn’t mind a bit more, but it is still good none the less. The maltiness had a wonderful feeling of coating my entire mouth, as if trying to completely satiate my tastebuds.

Yes, this is a Marzen, but with this caveat - it's brewed with some of it's malt smoked, like the regular lager. Poured a dark copper color, with a frothy, tan head. The foam hung around a bit, with some ok lacing. Nose exhibits some malt and smoky qualities (more-so than their regular lager). Has a mild caramel hint to it, also. Felt fairly smooth over the tongue, but was a bit less than medium in the body. Has a good malt flavor, with some more caramel, and nice touch of smokiness. Finishes a tad dry; and let it warm it bit and it has a much better flavor profile. Prosit!!
