50cl serving in weissbier glass at Spezial, Bamberg

A - Cloudy amber body with a solid creamy 4 finger white head. Very good lacing/head retention

S- Lots of spicey stornoway black pudding, hint of clove.

T - Spicey black pudding is dominant with an underlying banana clove note in a semi dry finish.

M - Medium carbonation/body

D - Like the lager i cant get enough of the spicey black pudding note, just love it. Along with the classic weissbier notes and the refreshing drier finish its superb. It has a more subtle carbonation, fuller body than the lesser weissbiers, which i definitely prefer.

Sampled from bottle at the brewery. Is this really a "rauchbier"?

This weissbier poured a cloudy, golden amber color with creamy, off-whtie foam. The smell was good: bananas and cloves with a hint of citrus. The taste was tangy with banana, cloves, yeast, and wheat. Some hops came out in the finish. The mouthfeel was smooth with medium body and moderate carbonation. There was a pleasant lingering aftertaste with elements of yeast, citrus, and hops. This was a very nice and refreshing bier.

Dark yellow gold to amber in colour and rather hazy, with a great dense head above.

Smells like a typical Hefe, with a modest touch of smoke to it that corresponds nicely with a gentle trace of hops. Since the smokiness is so subtle, it combines well with the Hefe-characteristics. But there also is a kind of ''ashy'' presence in the nose that disturbes me just a little.

Smokiness adds a bitter twist to the main flavors of sour wheat and fruity sweetness. The finish balances out nicely wheat and smoke characteristics and leaves just about enough room for some hoppiness.

In the mouth, the smokiness gives a harsh or raw feel to the beer's firm body. Carbonation is correct and slightly stinging.

Since it is much less smokey then Schlenkerla's Weisse, Spezial's version doesn't seem to be hesitating between one style and another ''style'' -- which can be considered an advantage, or simply as less exciting.... I like this beer a lot, but wouldn't mind some more smoke either.

I purchased this from the brewery (it's lighter colour/helles).

A: Hazy bronze-straw; white head, some retention, with great lace.

S: Citrus, pineapple and smoke. (Hawaiin BBQ?)

T: Bready, smokey, pinapple (like a candied ham), touch of citrus in the finish. This taste score is pushing a 4.5.

M: Light to moderate body is creamy and slightly acidic. Carbonation is on the low-side of moderate.

D: Very drinkable for a Rauchbier (4.5); but just alright for a Weisse (3.5). I'll give this hybrid the average.

tasted at the source. had a couple in the courtyard between the brewery and the pub. plenty going on the enjoy

hazy light amber color; looks like a hefe. big hefe aroma with the banana bursting and some vanilla following behind. no smoke in the nose
good head replenished by ample carbonation that makes it a dry beer as well

the rauch is interesting in a hefe—not sure if i would have imagined it to go well, but it was fairly successful, though the smoke character was minimal and seemed to play with the bitterness well.

Had this in the beer garden in Bamberg.
Cloudy, light brown witha a huge off white head. Instant smoke flavor that seperates this from your average Weiss. Dry, spicy and slightly hoppy mouthfeel that lingers for awhile before finishing dry and slightly sweet due to the smoke flavor. It seemed to me that this would go well with spicy fare and the brats on the menu would be a good pairing. One of the best Weissbiers I have ever had if not the best.

Got this at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam.

From a bottle into a weizen glass.

Note: The thick bottle made the standard pour impossible, which detracted from the experience.

APPEARANCE: Pours a very large 3+ finger thick fluffy white head that mountains out the top of the glass. Great retention and more than average carbonation evident, that eventually calms down after the yeast is poured in. A deep tangerine amber orange colour. Head slowly dissipates and levels out into a thick film cap and stays the whole way. Some lacing. Very nice.

SMELL: Wheat malt with a touch of clove and citrus in the back as well. The scent is not really strong enough and lacks a punch.

TASTE: Wheat malt at the beginning, which fades into some dough, bread, and a good degree of bitterness from the smoke. A unique twist on the style. Quite a nice, strong, long lasting bitter-sweet aftertaste of sweet malt and some bread. Unique and enjoyable, much more so than the nose advertised.

PALATE: Thick body for the style, creamy smooth and goes down smooth with no bite. Medium carbonation and finishes relatively dry on the palate. Pretty nice.

OVERALL: Very good. Nose was nothing special, but everything else was top notch. Drinkable and enjoyable, one I'd certainly go for again.

Another awkward upsidedown pour that ended in a bit of spilling.

A: Crazy dense and creamy head. A full 4 fingers with excellent rentention. Dark for a weizen. A tea brown orange and fairly cloudy. Massive rising carbonation. One of the best heads I've ever seen on a weissbier. tons of lacing.
S: Typical strong german malt with a nasal passage clearing yeast. A bit sweet and slightly smokey. Far in the background there's a smoked ham/salmon smell.
T: Very different from a typical weizen or any other German beer.. Earthy malt, subtle sweetness, yeast is very integrated into the flavor and doesn't stand out on it's own. Slightly smokey. That smoked ham/salmon is also in the flavor as well. Very different but good.
M: Very soft with a very light carbonation sting.
O: Interesting and nice. Far from representative of hefeweizens, but an interesting take.

This beer was dark gold to pale amber in color, with a bit of characteristic cloudiness to it. Did not taste any smokiness though (which one might expect from this brewery). There was a bit of banana flavor, that could be described as somewhere between mild to medium. Overall a pretty decent Weisse.

Dark gold in colour. Aromas of banana, lemon, some mild berry fruit and even milder smoke. Strong vanilla elements on the palate, which mix with more banana, and a bit of oak. A nice bit of spicy bitterness on the finish as well. The body starts out full and creamy, but dries a bit on the finish. My sample is a bit past its best (best before 2005), but you can tell it was a quality brew at one point.

The colour is orange-yellow, the liquid hazy (although there are more yeast in the top of the glass than in the bottom). The thee finger head is firm; it leaves lots of lacing.

The smell is rather neutral: Fruit esters, sourish notes. Some minerals.

The taste starts off with odd notes of beef stock and boiled meat. Some salt and spices. The aftertaste got notes of wheat flour, fruity esters and a touch of yeast.

The carbonation is light, the small bubbles are weak. The liquid is a little sticky.

One of the least impressive German weissbiers I have had so far.

Served from a bottle into a .5l hefeweissbier glass in Bamberg. My bottle displayed an ABV of 5.3%, NOT 5%. Reviewed from notes.

A: Pours a five finger head of fair cream, nice thickness, and amazing retention. Colour is a dark nontransparent copper. There's a nice downward bubble show.

Sm: Pleasant wheat with nice malt tones. Marzen hops. A moderate strength aroma.

T: Hoppy body over a wheat foundation. Some badly handled malt. Too sugary, as though not all of the sugar was fermented. Balanced well, but built poorly.

Mf: Decently coarse and refreshingly wet. Matches the flavours.

Dr: All the sugar clearly hasn't fermented as it ought to have. They bottled and/or released this too early. Despite the mistake, I can tell if properly handled, the flavour would be great. It would make an excellent festbier. Poorly priced for a badly brewed beer. I'd like to try it when it's finished.
