Brewed in 2001, enjoyed in 2013 - very nearly 12 years old at this point... Thanks for the relic, Jeff! The dingy and murky copper body comes as no surprise, and neither does the somewhat poor head formation... A fizzy, beige collar manages to work its way atop the rustic brew, settling softly where the beers meets the glass at the top.

Seemingly sweet aroma with a cornucopia of dark fruits; I'm getting massive notes of red grapes, raisins, prunes, plums, and even a little bit of cherry skin and tannin. Fruity and malty with a touch of residual sweetness in the form of Belgian Candi sugar. Little bit of caramel, too, and despite the extended aging period, there isn't really any detectable oxidation on in the nose... impressive!

The taste is very similar, following the nose quite closely with an introduction of plums and prunes abound. It's decadently sweet, again, with a little bit of Candi sugar in there, as well as a hint of caramel and toffee, too. Though oxidation escaped the aroma, it's present in the palate, but it isn't too much of a heartbreaker. It brings forth a mild sherry note, along with the slightest bit of that unwanted, wet cardboard.

A good bit of finishing malt sweetness, along with a hefty bit of vinous-like characteristics, mainly grape skins that are heavily akin to a fine wine. The oxidation was only a mild hindrance, but luckily gets beaten out in the finish by the other elements of the brew. Creamy, medium bodied, and relatively low carbonation, but still not bad given the age of the beer.

Overall, I was really impressed by how this trappist ale held up against 12 years of sitting in a bottle. It's just that... well, I've had better trappist ales. This beer would certainly be more appreciated by wine lovers, though I still found it to be quite tasty; something about it just wasn't exactly my cup of tea. Still nice, especially considering the age... Just a few steps out of my wheelhouse.

A seriously good beer. A 750ml capped bottle, with best by 10/08 on the label. It was a dark brown with some red highlights. Nice thick tan head. A fruity, vinous aroma. Exceptional taste. Dark fruit, yeast, malt, wine all wonderfully well-balanced. Smooth and quite drinkable.

Pours a brown color with a white head. Aroma is yeast and Belgian candi sugar. You also get some caramel. The flavor is caramel with a lot of malted sweetness. The alcohol is definitely present. Medium carbonation and extremely drinkable, even for 9.5 percent ABV.

sampled 6/03/05. Just a glorious beer. This was a hit around the table, even with those who may not have had a Belgian beer before. It poured a glowing, batter-y, leather brown and put forth a mild head and a small ring of foam. The beer emitted a rich aroma of caramel, apples, tilled earth, fruit, figs, honey and marzipan? What the..? (** Just saw V's review below and he mentioned almonds, so I guess I am not completely off with the marzipan.) The flavor is sweet and quick, a melange of the above elements with mild black pepper, perfume, and tree bark? (Damned if I know what kind of tree.) There's some candy sugar and a medium dose of alcohol, contributing to what evolves into a maple syrup character. The beer is delicate, yet forceful, with gummy hops and some strong seed flavors. The mouthfeel is good but not particularly thick; there's some foaminess in the mouth and it could be smoother on the whole. The drinkability maintains an average pace, which is actually quite brisk for such a strong beer. Highly recommended -- you should get some.

750ml into a Samichlaus Tulip. Split the bottle with a friend. Best by date of 3/10 notched into the label.

A: Dark brown with a very persistent head. Little floaties in the glass from the pour, even though I left plenty (~3 inches) in the bottle.

S: Beautiful Belgian smells. Dark fruit esters and wonderful malts, and the ever present Belgian yeast smells.

T: In many ways, this beer seems more subtle than its BSDA counterparts. I get the spices and the hints of citrus. A little orange zest, maybe? In all, a wonderful Trappist beer that I wish was found more easily around here.

M: Like most Belgians, this one isn't shy on the carbonation. Very full mouthfeel.

D: Sure, why not? The pleasant subtleties of this beer keep the intrigue coming, sip by sip.

A big ass 750 of this seems like a good one for beer review # 1,000...

Completely opaque darker brown color, head is light ochre and good in an open Trois Pistoles chalice. Laces in sheets with holes tearing through. Aroma is sharp -- raisins, lime juice, mink oil, lots of yeasty perfume. Flavor goes in a slightly different direction and is solidly matched by a good medium mouthfeel. Very plummy, clove gum, and a back up of dried current, sweeter than the aroma implies. Becomes more molasses-like on warming, a white rum kind of deal. Hopping is a trace effect at best, but the wild and slightly astringent aroma matches well with the stolid body and malty flavors. Could use just a trace more complexity to the latter. Plenty of beer to experience here, though.

Appearance: Cloudy amber brown off white cream speckled lacing, nice thanks for the sample beergeek279. Aroma: Plums, raisins with brown sugar ripened fruit tones very nice hides the alcohol very nicely almost too well. Taste: Creamy ripened fruit big and chewy flavors alcohol is evident with a deep vinous tone to it, awesome flavor. Mouthfeel: Effervescent carbonation coats the palate nicely leaving the flavors there to linger in a good way. Drinkability: Excellent not cloying in anyway nice Achel selection that gives the brewery some definite credentials.

Pours a frothy off-white head over a deep garnet tinted mahogany body. Head recedes leaving a few sheets of lace. Aromas of sweet vinous fruit, plumbs and cherries mixed with traces of earth. Taste is light sweet chocolate upfront, quickly giving way to a more complex mixture of tart cherries, raspberries and caramel. A subdued hop spiciness adds some zing. Quite smooth and sweet, yet fairly light bodied. Moderate carbonation. A lingering sweetness.

A sweet and complex ale. The light body is a bit misleading as the well-hidden ABV is a respectable 9.5%. There is also just enough of a hop bitterness/spiciness to balance out the sweet malt flavors and make this a great sipping ale.

Poured a rich, dark, almost blackish brown color, with a one finger tan head that grew to a two finger head before receding to a thick foam leaving abundant lacing down the glass. Very nice, well done example of the style. Scents of dark fruit especially plume, some fig, red grape, slight grape skin, bready malt, hints of candi sugar, Belgian yeast, and some honey and cream, along with some wild sour and tannin like aromas all mingling together. As it warms apricot enters the aroma profile as well. Very pleasant, fruity, sweet and complex aroma with some nice wild yeast detectable. Very good, true to style but also unique in its own way. Taste begins with a boozy, sweet, fruity flavors with notes of alcohol, raisin, grape, plum, prune and fig flavors along with some sugary, caramel-like flavors, candi sugar and slight bready malt. Some slight sour flavors are present in the background throughout the sip. Alcohol and candi sugar notes remain present throughout with sour notes becoming more prominent on the middle and end of the sip. Tannins and slight red wine flavors join the fruity and caramel flavors in the middle and finish, but in a subdued fashion, while the bready malts drop off. Abundant alcohol on the finish as well as faint earthy Belgian hop and faint Belgian yeast spiciness and some sour notes. Aftertaste is earthy hops and alcohol. A very fruity, sweet, yet also sour flavor profile that is quite complex, though not to the degree of Rochefort 10. Still very well executed with a variety of flavors on the display. The Mouthfeel is sticky and medium-heavy bodied with moderate carbonation, a slight acidic sting and a bit of an alcohol burn. Semi-drying. A good, pleasant sipping beer mouthfeel, true to style. Not quaffable, but that's not what the style is about. Overall quite the nice Trappist dark ale. True to the bones of the style but with a unique character due to the red wine and sour notes with a wonderful aroma and flavor and a nice sipping mouthfeel, quite nice and worth the $20 I paid to try it.

A - A brown ale hanging in my glass with carbonation bubbles racing to the surface. A fluffy beige cream floats on top of a bit hazy fluid.

S - This smell like Westmalle yeast, a bit like Westvleteren 12 too, nutty and raisins.

T - A perfect brown ale taste, creamy, nutty, candy sugar sweet, raisins and figs.

M - A soft to medium carbonation, just a touch of bitterness and just a touch of alcohol.

O - A very good, what? A dark ale? It is more a quadruple, almost, if not, the same as Westvleteren 12!

Extremely dark tan-maroon. From any distance it appears purple brown. Genernally opague, and the pale beige head disappears with some haste.
The nose is all golden raisins, dates, carob, and cocoa.
Tastewise, it is more of the same. Up front is the dry, not-quite-chocolate-leaning yearnings of carob, augemented by dates, figs, plums, and raisins. Add unto this molasses and brown sugar. Next come yeast with its chalkboard and generalized breadiness. The fruitiness resides through the conclusion and there is little to speak of hop-wise.
Medium bodied with a thickish bodied partially alleived through CO2.
Pretty solid overall, even if It's not in the same class as things like St Bernie 12, des Rocs, Westy, or Rochefort. In it however, better than Chimay Blue

Creamy smooth dark brown lace beautiful small retained head. Licorice, touch of roast, chocolate malt, well malted, vanilla and chocolate. Very good carbonation from hops. Trappist fundamental character though very complex. A must have, and with 1-3 pals as its a bomber..

Best before November, 2009 (making this a 2005 vintage?). Poured from a 750mL bottle into my Trappist Westvleteren goblet.

Cloudy sienna liquid glows a gentle copper when held to a strong light. A small active khaki head recedes to a flat lasting collar and slick. Tiny microbubbles feed the surface. Good retention, sandy lacing, and viscous tears slide down the sides.

Resinous tobacco, cocoa, banana leaf, figs, raisin, fine rum in the nose - complex and inviting though with just the faintest hint of oxidation.

Deep penetrating malt on the palate unfolding slowly with rich sweet complexity - demerara, turbinado, honey, and leather are each hinted at. A touch of dark fruit and rye (both probably coming from the slumbering yeast) lead into the long delicate finish.

Medium bodied, lightly effervescent, and filling (though never hot).

Already one of the best examples of the style (I still think of this as more of a "quad"), it ages very well. Best served with cheese and contemplation.

A: hazy, golden with a white head that remains laced on the sides as the beer is drunk or stays if you don't haha
S: very fragrant, fruity, floral
T: sweet initially with tropical fruits of pineapple and guava maybe some mango that turns slightly bitter and drying at the end
M: moderately carbonated with a milky body. Dries like a champagne
O: not bad but not great either. Will return to see if it's different on a fresh palate as I had a few other brews before tasting this one.

Certainly worth trying! When I first opened an Achel 8 Brune side by side with the Achelse Kluis and tasted them cold from the fridge I thought that these beers were both born from the same grist bill with one being just slightly larger. Now I'm not so sure. I was very disappointed with the 8 Brune, but the Kluis is quite special. They initally appear to be almost exactly the same in the glass with a hazy/cloudy russet brown colored body and dark ivory cap, but the head on the Kluis is much creamier, holds far longer, and leaves some very nice lacing lace whereas the basic Achel drops and leaves next to no lace. The nose on both is similar with a sugar-cookie dough maltiness, some red grape, a splash of yeasty spiciness and some alcohol, but the Kluis is much richer and even displays a lightly cocoa-ish side. And, I guess to some extent, the alcohol is more restrained even though it's a touch higher in actual content. Hmmm.... I think more time and effort is put into this beer; as well as a bit more malt. The body is solidly medium and starts to border on full but never quite gets there; and its very fine, natural carbonation tingles the tongue. In the flavor, semi-rich cocoa-tinged sugary maltiness acts as a base while notes of grape-like fruitiness, a spray of hops, and some lightly peppery alcohol and yeasty spiciness widen its character. It's impeccably balanced despite its strength; and it finishes drying with some lingering sugar, hop, and fruit. Although the intensity of the alcohol is still an issue, this remains an impressive and majestic brew that's on par with most of the other Trappist brews... think somewhere between a Chimay Premiere and Grande Reserve. Give it a shot!

Pours a fizzy head that immediately dissipates to nothing. Brew is a dark nut brown, clear in body with some carbonation in the center and a graininess around the edges.

Strong and sweet BSDA aroma: prunes and figs feature prominently, along with nuts and a touch of cola.

Flavor follows: this is a classic, potent, sweet BSDA. A little too sweet for my liking, in fact; it's rich and smooth but too cloying. Figs and prunes again are the dominant flavor; there's a bit of cola, as well as a subdued touch of tobacco.

Dry effervescent finish at first, but it lingers cloyingly around the gums. Very smooth. Just a touch of building warming heat in the chest; beyond that, the 9.5% is completely absent. Lively with just a touch of sting.

This is a very good BSDA, but it's sweeter than I'd like. It aged tremendously well, showing no ill effects.

I bought this last April in New York City and it's the second last of the trappists I've yet to try (Rochefort is the last, it's in my cellar). I wasn't expecting too much, they are the most recent trappist brewery (1998) although they had brewed previous to WWI. I've heard average reviews of the Brune and Blonde, but I was completely blown away by this beer, I'm glad I chose the Extra. When the cap was popped it foamed like crazy, the smell was wine-like and fruity. The taste was similar, sweet with slight sugar, and a tangyness that reminded me of Duchesse de Bourgogne. The colour was a dark brown with a strong billowy head. Carbonation was typical of trappists, although not as prickly as some. I'll definitely grab this again, one of the top beers I've had.

Rich, dark medium brown. Head is slow forming and quick to dissipate. The head brings a stark contrast to the dark beer with white bubbles.

Very malty in the nose. Dark ripe fruits are present, red apples and red grapes.

The taste is stellar. It's malty and very fruity. The apples and grapes are prevalent and dominate everything else. It's high in alcohol and while you can taste it, it's not overpowering.

It's a medium bodied beer, a bit on the sweet side. Not too malty, but very fruity. A slight tanginess balances the sweet, which is beneficial because there is no hop presence. It tries to be a dry finish but it lacks the carbonation, leaving a slightly sticky sweet finish.

As usual, it's a great Trappist beer. Bordering on too sweet, but it goes down easy. I'd drink it more often but it was $17 for a half liter...almost worth it.

Split a bottle at Tap and Table in Emmaus, PA. Why, why, why does this beer have to be nearly $29? It's easily the best the legal (not Westvleteren) Trappist beer I've had. Damn. The flavor is soft and malt-heavy with an earthy background. The barley brings a complex mix of typical but delicious candy flavors: figs, toffee, caramel, and cocoa. They're subtle flavors that develop as you sip though, not like some big beer that knocks your palace out. This is an experience, not just a drink. Find this beer.

Hard to believe i can actually get this locally but it's true (thanks Pop The Cap). Pours a hazy deep mahogany with a nice tan head that retains as well as can be expected. Aroma is an intense blend of malt and fruit; scents of plum, currant, blackberry, raspberry, dark candied sugar, toasted bread, light clove, and some slight grassy and floral hops...extremely intriguing and near perfect. The taste easily matches the aroma, big fruit and malt flavors: currant, blackberry, fig, plum, raspberry, toasted bread, dark candied sugar, light clove and corriander spices, floral and grassy hops, and some fruity ale esters. Mouthfeel is thick and rich with light to medium carbonation and alcohol is present but doesnt detract from the experience. This is easily my favorite trappist so far; complex, rich and delicious this is definately something to seek out.

750 mL bottle poured into a CBS snifter. Bottled 10/16/2009, I think. Bottle was getting quite old so I opened it.

Appearance - Deep brown with a bit of murk. Builds a nice head as I pour it, as many Belgian darks do. Thick collar as the khaki head recedes.

Smell - I always find it difficult to describe these aromas. It's not caramel, it's much fruitier, but it has a brown sugar tinge to it. Definitely some heat to this, too. Not a sweet aroma.

Taste - Much fruitier right up front. Touch of sweetness. Dark fruits give way to quite a bit of earthy and slightly bitter flavors. Some oxidation could be the cause of the bitterness. Not as boozy as the nose.

Mouthfeel - It is just a little bit thin. Oxidized and bitter, but still a nice drink. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Probably should have drank this sooner. Kept at 55 degrees for 3 years or so, but still showing some age. Still quite a good beer, though.

Gusher! Pours chestnut with a finger of tan head & lacing

S: Brown sugar, apples, pears & light booze

T: Brown sugar, green apples. Leafy hops & a bit of tartness up front. Orchard fruit, spicy yeast, and oaky notes. Finishes with leafy hops & figs

MF: Soft carbonation & medium bodied

Drank okay but just not complex or malty enough to make me think paying $17 for this bottle was a smart move

Hazy, reddish-brown in hue with the slightest bit of purple-copper highlight; nice! Creamy foam, a thick mass of bubbles created two fingers of head. I had to short pour my chalice as the head was so ample. Head retention was great; the bubbles slowly faded to a small but thick cap. It looks like freaking concrete. Awesome head related qualities! There was loads of subsequent lacing, not quite tattered wallpaper but impressive nevertheless. So in sum, this is a great looking beer! Dare I say… perfect? I do.

I’ve had this beer before and was so impressed with it. As I sit here and smell this example the nose just is not popping in malty richness. Red wine notes with an almost sour maltiness following, vaguely fruity… weak hints of alcohol, caramel, and chocolate. It took a few moments of deep sniffing before I could unlock any rich maltiness and still it was very faint. Moderate potency, somewhat chatty but it is not what I remember. The last time I had this was at a Trappist beer tasting, I thought it was right behind Rochefort 10 as the best of the night (there was no Westy beers… BTW, Westy 8 is better than 12). Based on this sample, it is nowhere near that good. Better than Chimay Red or Blue but what isn’t. Zing! Anyway, I’m finding this somewhat simple but it is inviting.

The palate is pretty damn awesome. Again, I don’t find it nearly as deep or rich as before and I don’t taste the chocolate as well nor is the raisins, plums, or apples are noticeable. The bottle I have was purchased from the same beer tasting where it impressed me so. Odd. Maybe I just tried this after drinking a Chimay or something. Zing! Okay, back to reality… the palate is very good (really good!) as there are plenty of alcohol infused fruit notes with molasses hints, brown sugar notes, and spiced rum cookies at the back. Yummy. Ticklish sweetness at the finish and it lingers into the aftertaste with hints of cherries. Fairly warm aftertaste… calm but lively, I am really impressed at how the beer revs up for the finish and cools so nicely for the aftertaste. The flavor profile has really grown on me; it starts slow but finishes strong. What a great freaking beer!

Slightly fuller then medium in body, very creamy and smooth carbonation creates a beer that is silky smooth on the tongue. I absolutely adore the mouthfeel, for a beer this big and this complex the mouthfeel is stunning.

Aside from the nose this beer has pretty much delivered from what I recall. I think this beer is absolutely great and kind of overlooked. But what do I know. There are so many great beers that get little play on BA while a handful of others get mentioned to the point of nausea. Back to the point… this beer is very drinkable, dangerously so. At this point in the review I’d like to suggest some clever food pairing, well, not today. I am tired and this beer has soaked my brain. All I can say is what a great night cap! I am happy to say I purchased this beer in Omaha! I can’t wait until I can buy it somewhat regularly. I am deeply impressed.

Poured a thick dark brown, almost pudding like in thickness, a light thin brown head.

Has a big and bold smell with lots of sweet dark fruits and some yeasty funk.

The flavor is very strong with a big port like sweetness mixing with some dark raisons and cherries along with the yeast bringing some funk.

Mouthfeel is very creamy with lots and lots of carbonation, a touch of warmth.

The drinkability is fine and this is a very solid offering, just a touch to sweet to be great.

Quads are my favourite so this could have been a little biased but this is not your typical quad.

I have never been a real fan of Achel Blonde or Brune (I find them a little on the bland side) but this one took me by surprise...

A: Deep ruby brown and cloudy in appearance with a great fluffy head. Lots of lacing down the side of the glass.

S: Smells more like a fruity wine. and this is where this quad lacks the typical sweet aroma; only the fig and malt overtones. However, it just makes what is to come even more special.

T: Exceptional! Not the typical sweet aftertaste of my favourite quad (Rochefort 10), it rolls off rather dry but flavoursome all the same! Lots of malt, spice and dark fruit. YUM!

M: Very well carbonated for a quad, lots of lasting bubbles that you can still feel long after it's gone. Somewhat similar mouthfeel to the Unibroue 17.

D: You must drink this at almost room temperature to get the most out of it. Never drink it too cold. A little bit of alcohol burn afterwards but this does not affect what is surprisingly a very easy drinking quad. More please!
