Oranges, Juicy, Rind, Bitter

This is Ska's Modus Hoperandi with orange peel and dry-hopped with Mandarina Bavaria hops. Once a limited, draft only special, it's now available year-round in cans. And from its shiny new container it pours bright with a coppery-orange hue and a fluffy foam head with plenty of stick. A massive dose of orange in the nose gets the glands going. The flavor starts with sweet and juicy oranges, tons of rind, distinct tangerine notes from the hops, hints of caramel malt in the backbone, and ends with a dry bitter edge with some resin and pine lingering about. Bottom line: Modus Mandarina is a kick-ass palate twist on an already kick-ass IPA.

As reviewed in BeerAdvocate magazine #107 (December 2015).

normal modus needs no improving. in a can, its possibly my favorite ipa in colorado, just a really top notch beer thats very distinct from the crowd. this however, is a pretty cool evolution of it. the beer retains what i love about it, a bigger but still dry malt base, and a pungent late hop hit. the orange peel pops it off though, smells like fresh oranges being juiced, and the hops, they are so alive and complimentary to what else is going on. the flavor is true to the nose, where the mandarin orange presence is really quite vibrant and authentic, but it never stops being an ipa and turns into a fruit beer like so many, its big and stocky and bitter in the finish, carbonated aggressively, and somehow really dry and quick on the back end for what it is. i definitely dont think i would chose this on a permanent basis over regular modus, i am too attached, but its awesome they did this, and i hope they can coexist for awhile. this is a really awesome ipa, i am surprised it hasnt gotten more recognition already. nothing like it.

12 oz can. Pours clear copper orange with a big rocky off white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is lots of sugary citric orange hops.

The flavor is sweet sugary citric orange and lemon peel with a bitter piney hop finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, very nice - modus but fruitier.

Clear orange colour. Faint malt and citrus aromas. Nm else. Very snappy carbonation, sweet malt is cut with heavy citrus hops and orange peel. Relatively clean finish. Nice light IPA.

Dark copper to amber in color. There's a quarter inch of densely packed beige head resting on top. Heavy lacing. Aroma is heavily of citrus fruit and hops. The flavor is a bit more citrus hop than of mandarin orange flavor. Light malt is also in the mix. The mouth is lightly sticky and a tad chalky.

Pours a clear orange/Amber color, nice dark tan/orangish thick one inch head. Great retention and lacing. Sweet orange peel and malty aroma, quite nice. Bright orange peel and pine flavors abound, with a good malt backbone. Nice body, medium to thin, with good carbonation. Overall, this is quite a tasty beer, good addition to the Ska lineup.

12 ounce can into a tulip glass.

When I started pouring the beer I definitely thought something like "Goddamn, this beer looks orange, they might be taking the orange thing a bit far." Cooler heads prevailed. It's more copper in color in the glass, carbonation surges upwards and there's a frothy head that eventually becomes a sticky lace and film. 4.75

It's got some citrus, for sure, but nothing out of this world. Orange peel hits and makes me think of citronella before some sweet creamy malt aroma takes this into orange creamsicle territory. Past the citrus, there's a resinous and spicy finish to the aroma. 4

Citronella and cream pop make their way to my tongue. There are definitely elements of both. Resinous flavor in the middle with some caramel malt flavor. Piney flavor on the finish. Maybe a bit more malt flavor than I care for in an IPA these days, but there's also a ton of hop flavor and the orange is big and bold and unmistakeable, so I ultimately gets down. 4

Plenty of body and corresponding malt, but has a ton of citric and resinous and spicy hop feel to more than offset the malt and ensure this has enough bite for the hop heads. Dry and bitter finish, but sweeter leading up to that. Overall easy-drinking. 4

This beer is damn tasty and stands out from the crowd with the aggressive orange juice/mandarin flavor. Very good.

Canned best by date of 03/28/16

Appearance - Pours slightly hazy and orange amber in color with an off-white, half finger width head. Fair retention, then reveals a thin, broken layer of suds across the top. Not much for lacing, outside a streak or two and a few spots.

Smell - Strong notes of orange essence; juice, peel and oils. Faint pine.

Taste - As with the aroma, the flavor is predominantly orange; moreso pith and peel, but there's a light juiciness as well. Light caramel malt backbone that comes in near the finish. Aftertaste is very orange-centric, with a touch of pine and spice bite.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with moderate, tingly carbonation. Goes down easy enough, then a semi-dry finish.

Overall - They nailed it. Nice job incorporating the orange peel without killing the 'sessionable' qualities of a beer like this. Some gimmicky beers suck. Some are decent for a glass. This one I could kill 3-4 and not blink an eye.

My local beer store broke down a couple sixers for the mixed 6-pack bin. Very happy to try this one.
A - Pours a clear dark orange.
S - Big aroma dominated by orange peel.
T - Not the big mandarin orange bomb I was hoping for. The orange flavor was much more subtle.
M - Medium body and carbonation.
O - Good beer, very drinkable, would like to try it on tap.

Modus Mandarina is a tasty variant of Modus Hoperandi. The beer poured a clear blood orange with white head that is leaving a nice lace. The scent carries citrus (mango) fruit with hints of pine bitterness. The taste is fairly well balanced....sweet yet finishes slightly bitter and come off the pallet clean. Citrus fruit is present with slight pine and grapefruit like bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium in body with good carbonation. Overall its pretty darn good.

Look: copper orangie clear
Smell: very little aroma on this - I am a bit surprised since I was expecting some nice citrus notes
Taste: on the front end it's creamy and bright, finish is slightly bitter (balanced not harsh) some orange notes are there but not "in your face" - as with the CitruSinensis from Lagunitas. There is a nice crisp finish with just the right amount of carbonation. This is a nice West Coast style IPA but not by any means a "hop head" IBU monster.
Overall: a great IPA - definitely try this one.

This is a cool upgrade of the standard SKA IPA. Juicier, but not sweet. You can't quite tell what's orange peel and what's the hops. Overall it has a citrus punch character with an earthy edge.

Pours a beautiful orange color with a fluffy white head. Aroma is orange, grapefruit, pine, and earth. Taste follows with orange and grapefruit out front, and a whallop of pine and bitterness on the back end. Mouthfeel is medium and smooth with great carbonation. Perfectly drinkable. Overall, this is a really good beer from ska, and I like it better than the regular modus hoperandi.

BBD of 8 Jul 16

Pours an effervescent amber/copper with a thumb of cream colored head. Nice lacing & head retention

S: Orange peel & not much else

T: Orange rind, a little grapefruit, plus a little bready sweetness up front. Mango mixes in as this warms, along with plenty of orange peel, plus pink grapefruit & a little dryness. Finishes with a little woody bitterness, but also plenty of orange peel & grapefruit

MF: Medium body with fairly lively carbonation, nice balance

Drinks very easy, pretty nice take on the fruity IPA theme

Interesting riff on the original MO, with additions of orange peel and dry hopped with Mandarina Bavaria. The effect is some serious candied orange notes in the nose. The palate offers the same, mixed in with some nice caramel, and just a hint of the earthiness of the original. I really enjoy the original and find it refreshingly unique -- not another tropical juice bomb or citrusy blast, but instead oodles of good, earthy hop notes. The candied orange might be just a bit much for me here, and I do prefer the original, but this is still a fun, tasty brew.
