normal modus needs no improving. in a can, its possibly my favorite ipa in colorado, just a really top notch beer thats very distinct from the crowd. this however, is a pretty cool evolution of it. the beer retains what i love about it, a bigger but still dry malt base, and a pungent late hop hit. the orange peel pops it off though, smells like fresh oranges being juiced, and the hops, they are so alive and complimentary to what else is going on. the flavor is true to the nose, where the mandarin orange presence is really quite vibrant and authentic, but it never stops being an ipa and turns into a fruit beer like so many, its big and stocky and bitter in the finish, carbonated aggressively, and somehow really dry and quick on the back end for what it is. i definitely dont think i would chose this on a permanent basis over regular modus, i am too attached, but its awesome they did this, and i hope they can coexist for awhile. this is a really awesome ipa, i am surprised it hasnt gotten more recognition already. nothing like it.

12 oz can. Pours clear copper orange with a big rocky off white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is lots of sugary citric orange hops.

The flavor is sweet sugary citric orange and lemon peel with a bitter piney hop finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, very nice - modus but fruitier.

Pours a clear orange/Amber color, nice dark tan/orangish thick one inch head. Great retention and lacing. Sweet orange peel and malty aroma, quite nice. Bright orange peel and pine flavors abound, with a good malt backbone. Nice body, medium to thin, with good carbonation. Overall, this is quite a tasty beer, good addition to the Ska lineup.

12 ounce can into a tulip glass.

When I started pouring the beer I definitely thought something like "Goddamn, this beer looks orange, they might be taking the orange thing a bit far." Cooler heads prevailed. It's more copper in color in the glass, carbonation surges upwards and there's a frothy head that eventually becomes a sticky lace and film. 4.75

It's got some citrus, for sure, but nothing out of this world. Orange peel hits and makes me think of citronella before some sweet creamy malt aroma takes this into orange creamsicle territory. Past the citrus, there's a resinous and spicy finish to the aroma. 4

Citronella and cream pop make their way to my tongue. There are definitely elements of both. Resinous flavor in the middle with some caramel malt flavor. Piney flavor on the finish. Maybe a bit more malt flavor than I care for in an IPA these days, but there's also a ton of hop flavor and the orange is big and bold and unmistakeable, so I ultimately gets down. 4

Plenty of body and corresponding malt, but has a ton of citric and resinous and spicy hop feel to more than offset the malt and ensure this has enough bite for the hop heads. Dry and bitter finish, but sweeter leading up to that. Overall easy-drinking. 4

This beer is damn tasty and stands out from the crowd with the aggressive orange juice/mandarin flavor. Very good.

My local beer store broke down a couple sixers for the mixed 6-pack bin. Very happy to try this one.
A - Pours a clear dark orange.
S - Big aroma dominated by orange peel.
T - Not the big mandarin orange bomb I was hoping for. The orange flavor was much more subtle.
M - Medium body and carbonation.
O - Good beer, very drinkable, would like to try it on tap.

Modus Mandarina is a tasty variant of Modus Hoperandi. The beer poured a clear blood orange with white head that is leaving a nice lace. The scent carries citrus (mango) fruit with hints of pine bitterness. The taste is fairly well balanced....sweet yet finishes slightly bitter and come off the pallet clean. Citrus fruit is present with slight pine and grapefruit like bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium in body with good carbonation. Overall its pretty darn good.

Interesting riff on the original MO, with additions of orange peel and dry hopped with Mandarina Bavaria. The effect is some serious candied orange notes in the nose. The palate offers the same, mixed in with some nice caramel, and just a hint of the earthiness of the original. I really enjoy the original and find it refreshingly unique -- not another tropical juice bomb or citrusy blast, but instead oodles of good, earthy hop notes. The candied orange might be just a bit much for me here, and I do prefer the original, but this is still a fun, tasty brew.

Look: Two fingers of off-white head dissipates at a decent clip but leaves beautiful lacing. Copper in color.

Smell: Big mandarin orange on the nose. Hint of caramel and floral hops

Taste: Grapefruit and mandarin orange dominant. Perfect orange zest bitterness on the finish. Caramel makes an interesting but complimentary bedfellow to the citrus. It subtle enough to let the fruit shine but strong enough to give this beer some body and character.

Feel: Medium body. Decent carbonation. A little sticky after finish. Light oil.

Overall: A dang near perfect beer.A little to much carbonation detracts from the hop profile however slightly. Pretty interesting and layered. Modus Hoperandi is a usual suspect for me and this one has a more well rounded hop and malt profile. I dig it. Two thumbs up. Give it a go.

Poured into a Modus Hoperandi inwardly-flared twelve-ounce glass, from a twelve-ounce can purchased directly from the Ska taproom in south Durango.

I thoroughly enjoy the Modus re-imagining; the conception is interesting, but I think the execution is dynamite. Absolutely refulgent chromatics—at glints golden-brown, ruddy sunburst orange, or beaming cool pallid mahogany—meet serious effervescence, the latter being both visually appealing and a key component of this beer's bounce and brightness. There's just enough foam to foment a dry, candied tangerine-peel bouquet, which also gestures at pine sugars; the creamy head sticks around solidly, too, though I wish there was a bit more citric blast to the nostrils. Perhaps, though, they saved the blast for the taste-buds, as Modus Mandarina's collaboration of orange adjunct and appropriately citric-floral hops explode with clean, crisp notes of tangerine, clementines, Meyer lemon, candied orange-peel, but likewise shows a remarkable restraint when it comes to sugars. While the malt-profile with mainline Modus is hefty—though a tasty skeleton for its hop-blast heart—in the manipulated, sun-kissed cousin, it's firmly seat-belted to the backseat, behind the aforementioned juicy pop, some soft grassiness, and a substantial, slightly stinging herbal bitterness reminiscent of Fee's orange bitters.

Bonus points for sticking the landing.

Subtle orange aftertaste with distinct hoppy notes. Refreshing. Ska could use the "not just for breakfast anymore" catchphrase.

India Pale Ale dry-hopped with Mandarina Bavaria hops and brewed with orange peels. Tasted September 26, 2015 in a Spiegelau IPA glass from a 12 oz can with a best by date of Feb 15 16. Look is clear bright amber, medium head that dissipates to a thin cover, and sticky lingering lacing. Smell is orange marmalade, caramel malt and floral hop notes. Taste is a nice balance of mandarin orange sweetness and hop bitterness. Feel is medium in body with a somewhat oily mouthfeel.
