Modus Hoperandi – IPA (6.8%) - Ska Brewing Co. (Colorado)

App: Beer pours a crystal clear medium to deep amber with an OK one finger head that dissipates quickly, but leaves a lot of sticky lacing around the glass. Head is almost completely gone. But there are still enough bubbles left on top to make it a decent looking beer.

Smell: Piney/citrus hops characteristics strong with a nice, almost smokey malt backbone that really compliment one another. Twinges of caramel commingle with assertive hops very well. Slight hints of chocolate and phenols/alcoholic heat. Smells a little of decay in a pleasant way.

Taste: Surprisingly chocolate like on the foretaste with some creamy caramel sweetness well suited to balance the pronounced hops character. Bitterness comes on slowly after the swallow, with the hops true flavors rearing near the end with hints of mold, earth, and dry clay. Cannabis like skunkiness from hops flowers into bright and bitter piney character well after the swallow. Seems more like a well balanced pale ale to me, with the American hops character being the only thing that would define it as “India” (The irony isn't lost on me)

Mouth: A little light bodied for my tastes. A little hot. Combatively hoppy on the end, but not overwhelming of the residual sweetness. Carb is pretty soft at this point, but the beer has been agitated quite a bit.

Home tasting, 12oz can into Tulip Glass. 2/5/14.

Good appearance. Dark amber with ruby hints. Nice head and lacing.

Very appealing mild citrus and stronger pine aroma. Totally correct for the style. Not a super strong aroma but quite good.

Taste is typical American IPA and similar to SN Torpedo to my taste buds. Good balance of sweet and bitter. Not huge citrus tatses but a bit of orange is there. Nice piney flavour, resinous feel and solid malt core make this a good drinking IPA. IBUs are noticeable and welcome!

Overall, a very solid offering and rendition of this renown style of beer. Perhaps nothing outstanding or remarkable for those who've tried a few of this style but definitely enjoyable. This would have a wow factor for anyone not used to big, hoppy US beers.

Great to see Ska come with an IPA and a top notch one at that.Poured into a standard pint glass a dull hazed amber/bronze with a super clingy 1/2 finger white that left rings of lace behind as it never fully settled.Wow resin, resin, and more resin in the nose! That along with grapefruit rind a some caramel, for me its perfect, hence the rating.Flavors dont hit quite as hard as the nose but the hops rule, big pine resin and citrus, the caramel base does hold strong though making for not quite balance but near balance.A great IPA with assertive hops...the way it should be.

This beer was poured a rich coppery red color with a thin white head that cleared to a fine lace.

The scent was pine-y, and reminded me of a milder Green Flash IPA. Nice scent for sure, exactly what I would want out of a good IPA.

Unfortunately, the taste did not live up to the name. "Modus Hoperandi" had me pumped up for a really intense IPA, and this wasn't quite what I expected. Not weak by any means, but not the punch I was looking for. Keep in mind that I must be pretty inured to strong hops by now, because my fellow taster found it fairly strong. However, a great beer for its price: it was cheaper than the vast majority of good IPAs on the menu at the pub I was patronizing.

The mouthfeel was nice. Not sticky, not watery, but just right. As far as drinkability, they could have served this in a pint glass instead of a 10oz. I would have enjoyed a full glass.

A - Copper color, 1 finger off white head, moderate carbonation, clear with a bit of particulate matter.

S - Immediately hit by a nice hop presence, citrus with mostly grapefruit notes. A bit of caramel malt in there also once you get past the hops.

T - Like the aroma, there is a lot of hops here. Lots of citrus, but some pine notes come through also. The malt definitely takes a back seat, would like a bit more to help balance all those IBUs.

M - Has a rather light body, just a touch too light for my liking. With all the hop bitterness, a little more body would help balance it.

O - For a beer and brewery I had not heard of before, I was very happy with the beer. Would recommend and enjoy again.

Purchased from Binny's Beverage Depot in Warrenville, IL. Pours a bright, clear amber body with a fluffy off white head. Aroma is very thick on the hops! Big malt backbone that supports the very long hop finish. This beer is a hop head's delight! Awesome IPA.

Love to see another canned brew, especially an IPA! Pours into my glass a deep red orange like an autumn night harvest. Big creamy two fingers of eggshell head on that lingers on and leaves webbed lacing all over the glass. Aromas of biscuit malt with a touch of caramel that is bathed in a wall of herbaceous, resinous hops. Pine sap scents along with earthy accents. Hops are bold and a bit cheesy too.

First sip brings smooth biscuity malt with a touch of caramel that is quickly overtaken by herbal, earthy, pine resin hops. Bitterness kicks in full force and rides its way to the finish. A bit fruity and grassy as well. An interesting IPA that is blasting with a wild hop profile.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and super smooth. Goes down like water with creamy carbonation. Overall, an easy drinking IPA and being in a can is an extra plus. I know what IPA I will be grabbing for beach trips next summer. Thanks vasdef42.

12 oz bottle, bottled 3rd week of Feb. Pours a hazy reddish orange with a big creamy off white head that retains well and laced the glass.

The aroma is sweet melon and piney resinous hops.

The flavor is sweet caramelly fruits quickly followed by a big bitter bang. The hops are piney with charred resin and linger in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with nice carbonation.

Overall, a big hop monster. A pleasant surprise from SKA. I do prefer my IPAs a little more balanced with more fruity tones, but this is very good.

A- Pours a coppery gold with lots of little bubbles and a bit of haze. Head is half an inch of pure white with good retention but only moderate lacing.

S- Huge aroma comes out the second you open the can. Lots of fruits coming through with pineapple and blueberry bursting out. A little bit of bready malt and some earthiness are hidden in the mix of aromas.

T- Up front there is a light tingly tropical fruit flavor followed by a juicy fruity middle and a bitter hop bite on the end to bring it back to focus. It’s a pleasant experience all around but the bitterness on the end is just a touch too high for the rest of the flavors.

M- Thin and dry with moderate carbonation, its fitting for the style but nothing exceptional.

D- I’m not a huge hop head but this is an IPA not overdone but with good focus and flavor and one I would certainly enjoy a few more of.

12 ounce can purchased at Brawleys in Charlotte, NC. Best by dating towards the bottom of the can.

Pours darker honey amber, under a medium tan head.

Resiny hop nose

Pleasantly balanced IPA, nice level of honey infused malts, some vanilla, and soft and smooth yummy hops. Tasty better then respectable IPA, perhaps a bit on the amber side of the IPA/Pale ale/amber scale of things.

Pours a nice frothy thick off white head. Golden hazy body. Huge citrus, fruity(mango, pineapple, lime). This is one of the best smelling beers I've had. The strength, note quite the same flavors, of this beer smell compares to "Flower Power", "Ghandi-Bot" and "Un-Earthy". Tastes of pale sweet dextrins, citrus, tobacco, oily slick sticky bitterness in the finish. Very chewy and full bodied. Medium carbing. I want to enjoy a few of these at a time. Thank you Mike for sharing.

The beer pours a reddish-amber color with a tan head. The aroma is full of pine and grapefruit, with some nice sweet biscuit malt notes also thrown in. The flavor follows suit. I get a lot of big, resinous pine notes and a medium amount of bitterness. There is also some orange citrus in there, but it hides behind the pine. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very nice IPA.
