12oz can poured into a tulip. Beer generously provided by Exiled, thanks Jason!
A - Pours a hazy amber color, with a distorted view of the opposite side of the glass. A two-fingered tan head builds slowly, composed of medium-sized bubbles. Retention is pretty good, lasting for around 5 minutes or so, and as it dissipates, it leaves thick masses of foam behind.
S - The smell of this beer is a nice combination between tropical and pine hops, with a big part of the aroma consisting of grapefruit, tangerine, and pine sap. There's a lot of hops here and the malts are more subdued. There is some backbone here though, but don't expect the most balanced beer!
T - As the in the nose, the flavors are bursting with fresh hops, although the malts do come across a bit more here. It starts with a good amount of caramel malts to pave the way for the bitter malts, and they are strong enough to influence the taste well into the finish. More of the grapefruit comes across here, and the pine steps it up as well. This is pretty aggressively hopped for a single IPA.
M - The mouthfeel is moderately heavy-bodied with decent carbonation. It's a little on the low side of the carbonation spectrum, but it doesn't feel syrupy at all. You can definitely feel the hop resin weighing down the tongue and numbing it, which is always a cool feeling.
D/O - Drinkability is moderately high. I think the best aspect of this beer is the numbing aspect of the hops. I don't think I've had an IPA affect the palate so much as this one has, which is a testament to how well Ska has extracted the resin. The alcohol is nigh-impossible to detect and this drinks very smoothly.
