this stout was something that I have never had before. It was like a chilly, spicy stout. I think they got the body just right for the spices, no so much for the stout category, seems more like a brown stout at most. I enjoyed it for its creativity but think it would be hard to keep going back to. I think it is worth recommending, if you haven't tried a beer like this it is worth the adventure!

Poured from a 12 oz can into a snifter.

A- Pours a deep brown body with a small light brown head that reduces to nothing. No lacing.

S- Wow, I'm really getting the peppers on the nose.. very unique like nothing I've smelled before. Cayenne peppers, CUMIN, sweet barbeque sauce.. in there are subtle stout aromas but the peppers dominate here. I like it.

T- light chocolate, hot peppers, coffee predominate, get some cinnamon and cocoa on the follow through

M- Thinn-ish. medium carbonation

Interesting stout. Easy drinker, pretty unique especially on the nose. I'd drink it again

Poured from a can into a small snifter glass.

Pours as you would expect from a stout, being deep, black, and opaque. Also, not what you'd expect from a stout, as the head was a soda-type fizziness that quickly disappeared into nothingness. Granted, the can is a few months old now, so that may have played a role.

Nose is really unique, even among mole beers. There is a hint of cocoa and a whiff of pepper, but something else is here as well. It finally dawned on me... it's cumin! Chile beer? Now it's chile con carne beer! It's odd and unexpected, yet it seems to work.

Not sure that it works as well in the flavor, though. The cumin really comes to the front in the taste. Heavy spice that balances on the precipice of distraction. If there is cocoa in the flavor, it's hiding really well. Chile peppers are also way in the background, with only the tiniest bit of heat betraying their presence at all. The cumin flavor isn't overpowering, but it is predominant. The beer itself underneath all of this is a decent stout. They kept the usual stout roastiness out of the way, which was probably a good thing. That flavor would have clashed with everything else that's going on. Overall it isn't really a bad beer, but it seems out of whack just a bit. The cumin was novel, but borders on novelty. Then again, a mole stout *is* something of a novelty.

Mouthfeel is pretty light, and that's a good thing, as anything more rich or coating would make the beer seem oily with the other flavors.

I tried this as the Great American Beer Festival, and was captured by the uniqueness of the cumin idea, enough so I bought a sixer after the fest. Now that some time has passed, what appealed to me about it then just doesn't hold up. It's worth trying if you're in to molé or chiles, and especially if you like the flavor of cumin. I can imagine this would be really interesting to cook with, as well.

Mole stout is amazingly black. It's different than most stout though in that it seems to be matte black. Where light goes to die. A crackling beige head forms quickly and just as quickly disappears. When I say disappears I mean that there is zero foam within a minute of pouring.

The nose is interesting. It's mostly dominated by earthy pepper, in powder form. A little dusty cocoa is present intermingled with a background roastiness. There's not a lot of depth even with the spice additions. It seems that it's a little tired or muddled. Not bad but not great either.

Lactic sweetness mingles with some roastiness off the bat before the peppery bite takes over. Earthy pepper, cocoa powder, and faint cinnamon all play their roles with the pepper hitting hardest in the middle and fades through the finish. Again, there's nothing offensive here it just seems muddled and stale.

The body has a moderate weight with a bit of slickness. There seems to be some chalkiness involved. The spices leave a touch of bitterness and the finish eventually dries up. Pepper leaves a long aftertaste.

I can't say that I'm very impressed with Ska's Mole Stout. I like the idea but the execution is lacking. The spices seem stale and there isn't much to the base stout. I can't say I'd buy this one again.
