Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium orange amber with coppery tones. Half finger white head with decent retention and good lacing. Light aroma of caramel malt, citrus hops, citrus and pineapple hint of ethanol. Flavor dominated by citrus and piney hops, light caramel malt, finishing with a dry piney and grassy hop bitterness. A bit alcohol forward. Medium bodied. A double pale ale is an interesting but almost contradictory concept, and the higher ABV supported by barleywines is accompanied by a heavier malt body than expected for a pale ale. This is kind of a barleywine light. The hops are quite nice and are presented well, but I would have liked a bit more malt balance. Still, this delivers on its name, a strong pale ale. Interesting and the dry hopping was well done.

16 oz can from "Lifesource" in Salem OR $3.29 What have we here a Hales beer, a company that has been around now 30 years but never seemed to make the top tier of "microbreweries" or even make it semi-big like Pyramid or Redhook. Ive had their beers before but hard to find even in Oregon. Beer is a slightly hazy light amber/orange colour with a small cream coloured head. Aroma surprisingly, given the description, is muted a little floral and resin/herb but mostly caramel malts. Taste is weird..dark coffee and weak pine needles start it off, the carmale malts calm it down and a regular pine hop takes over then goes..this gives me heart burn on the first swallow..not so good. Mouth feel is thin and medium carbonation..no sign of alcohol. Disappointing stuff for a 30th anniversary..well at least they lasted that long.
I would give extra if allowed for the can artwork..i liked that

Hazed orange-tinted amber with an attractive foam in the Troubadour tall tulip. Bright and spritzy on the tongue. Malty taste and a sweet undertow.

Faintly sourish note. Kind of woody mouthfeel. Pineapple aroma, and tastes and smells like some fruity fermentation going on. Just a moderate bitterness, but it does taste like a Pale Ale that got jacked up with a shot of apricot brandy.

Interesting and fruit-filled malt bonanza. Long-lasting suds with a frothy, tangy mouthfeel. From the 22 oz bottle bought at Flood Valley Homebrew in Chehalis.

A: Poured a cloudy orangish color with good carbonation presenting a nice white head. The retention was pretty good and the lacing was spotty.

S: Pretty simple. Citrus and sweet breadiness

T: Initially a pungent and pronounced hop bite, sordove annoying like I just stuck my tongue to a 9 volt battery or something. Not very pleasant. The finish was more of the same, sharp lingering bitterness and citrus.

M: Medium bodied, well carbonated, a little sweet and bready feeling

O: Not a bad beer but I did not finish the can.

Poured into straight pint glass. Poured a cloudy orange color, with about 3/4 inch of off-white head that decent retention and light-moderate retention.

The aroma was a fairly even mix of malts and hops, with citrus having the lead by a slight margin. On the tongue, Hops were solidly dominant, and there was a sharp citrus bitterness that lingered at the back.

The body was fairly typical for a bigger IPA/smaller ImpIPA, which is closer to the style this beer is. Drinkability was decent enough, but the flavors didn't trip my trigger enough to really want to seek out another. Overall, a solid and reasonably enjoyable brew, probably worth a shot if you see it.
