Hale's Aftermath, simply labeled an India Pale Ale -- drink fresh. Buds and leaves impose on the front of the label of this 22oz bottle dated 02.01.17. Beer is cloudy pale orange and brings an oldschool IPA aroma. This reminds me very much of an East coast IPA, actually. Big, full bodied, and flavorful, but not without some sweetness. The website claims 100+ IBUs at 8.1% ABV, so you better believe there's some residual sugar here. By recent West coast standards this could be an blonde Imperial Red Ale and I'd love it.

Bringing those darker than average ipa colors, a darker amber. Clarity is not a strong suit. 1/2" off white head. Aroma was mostly alcohol. Not impressed.

Jeez, the alcohol just keeps coming in waves, becoming the dominant aspect of the beer. Hops seem only used for bittering. Straddles the line between barleywine, dipa and strong ale. Just doesnt do anything special or particularly good here.

22oz bottle poured into a large mug. I haven't given Hale's another shot since I gave up on them a few years ago due to the ever present metallic flavor to their beers -- every beer, every time, every format, every location (including the brewery).

Pours murky tan color with a medium pale head, fades slowly, makes little curtains as it fades. Smell is bright, sweet, hoppy, a little yeast to give it a slightly bready impression.

Taste is grapefruit rind hops, grapefruit rind hops, grapefruit rind hops, and some malty sweetness. There is a very slight metallicness coming through, but I'll chalk that up to personal prejudice.

Mouthfeel is nice. Chewy without being overpowering. Overall, it's a pretty good beer, but even for a DIPA, it's overbalanced toward the hops.

On tap at Pint Defiance today.

The beer pours a golden amber color, with very good head retention and decent lacing. The nsoe is prototypical DIPA, as I pick up considerable dry citrus, some pine, and some noticeable sweet malt. The flavor profile replicates the nose, but with the hoppy bitterness clearly winning out in this aggressively hopped DIPA. The sweet malt struck me as a bit much, but the hoppy bitterness was more than sufficient to counter and balance that sweetness. Mouthfeel was medium bodied, with a fairly long, bitter finish, which ultimately dried out the sweet malt. Alcohol is noticeable, but is not over the top boozy in this well crafted DIPA.

A nice enough DIPA, but I'll still take the regular supergoose given a choice.

Cloudy orange amber with big foamy sandy tan head and good retention and lacing. Subdued pine and hints of citrus sweetness. Bold pine and citrus hops upfront balanced quickly by a big malt backbone with a surprisingly nearly clean finish... at first. A relatively light bitter linger and warming alcohol... at first. Creamy and thick feel.

This is an easy drinking DIPA with strong hops and good balancing malts. At least that's what I was going to say about this one. About halfway through this lived up to it's name with an increasingly alcoholic aftermath. I was surprised to see this was only 8.5% considering it tasted like liquor by the end. I guess if you can't hide the alcohol just go with it. I like a good warmingly alcoholic beer but this just drowned out all the flavor and any enjoyment of drinking it. It was kind of funny watching how many times I dropped the scores I thought it should receive. Bonus points for an appropriate name but the aftermath to my tastebuds was too much to take.

I havent officially reviewed a lot of beers, but this beer put me in the mood tonight. I poured this 22oz bomber (courtesy of Knordstrom)in a tulip glass. Poured a beautiful amber orange with a 1/2 inch frothy head of tight tiny bubbles. the bubbles stuck to the side creating excellent lacing. smelled of citrus probably grapefruit and orange with a floral undertone. tastes like heaved. A citrus hop explosion. the mouthful was lively and a smooth swallow with that tingle from the alcohol and hops left at the end, zero alcohol burn or bitter aftertaste (surprisingly!). This is a highly drinkable beer if you dig hopbombs like I do. Cheers to Hale's on this one. Hope to try again real soon.

If you're never been to Hale's Brewery, it's a must-go. I've never walked into an establishment where beers are brewed and experienced such a wonderful cornucopia of fresh-grain smells. It makes the whole dining experience particularly satisfying.

As for this entry into the Hale's line, it's not my favorite. I'm a huge hop-head, so on that note Aftermath satisfies. However this brew has a lingering puckering bitterness, almost list that of an ESB, that I can't shake.

Decent beer, but one I won't seek out again...

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a medium orange-amber color with just a thin cap of white head that had low retention and lacing.

This beer had a very nice piney hop aroma and a trace of maltiness was in the background. The flavors were very similar, pine hops blended with a noticeable malt foundation and a bit of a sweet finish.

The body was very good, thicker and more full than most of the style. Drinkability was pretty good, a little better than average for the style, mostly due to the fuller body. Overall, a decent, if unspectacular, example of the style. Worth trying when you see it.

22oz bottle.

Pours hazy copper with an orange tinge and a half inch head of bone. Plenty of torn lacework throughout the glass along with a solid skim coat on the surface.

Aromatics lead off with a mix of crushed pine and grapefruit with chewy malt. Shades of caramel, toffee, and figs under a repressed hop nose. Definately lacking the hop blast found in great IIPA's.

Medium bodied with a chewy, tacky mouthfeel. Gummy.

Heavy pine with grapefruit under leads off the palate. Quite pithy and resinous with plenty of alpha-laced bitterness. A good dose of malt and caramel tries to balance but just adds some sweetness which I feel detracts in the style.

Finishes with a lingering bitterness riding below a somewhat rough attack of pine-smashed grapefruit and chewy malt. A slight burn on the throat from some fusels as well.

Tasty enough and plenty of points for the onslaught of hops on the palate, but the nose is meek and the hopping in general could use some complexity and finesse. A bit of heat helps the beer lean in a more Barleywine-type direction.
