Poured into an Elysian snifter. Pours pitch black with a fine two finger light brown head with great retention and lacing. Aroma dominated by whiskey with undertones of toasted malt and chocolate. Flavor follows, with understated toasted malt, chocolate and vanilla, somewhat sweet with a big bourbon presence, somewhat boozy. Medium bodied with some creaminess. This seems underwhelming in taste at first, but the malt and associated flavors are mellow and quite nicely support the nicely done bourbon and light oak. One of the more understated imperial stouts I've had, but quite nice barrel effects and overall a pleasure to drink. I am enjoying this quite a bit.

22oz. bottle poured into a snifter....
Black pour with a small brown cap. Smell/taste is very bourbon forward, not very complex. its quite easy too drink. imperial stouts are one of my favorite styles lately and this one is just very middle of the road. if you like lite bourbon flavor give this one a try.

22oz bottle (bottled 2/28/2013) into a tulip. Pours pitch black w/ a 1-finger mocha head that leaves behind some oily lacing and a nice slick tan film on the surface.
Aroma is big bold roasty notes and dark fruit. Toffee, molasses, earthy toasted nuts, rum-soaked figs, vanilla.
Taste is rich, complex and velvety. Pretty sweet too. Big vanilla, hazelnuts, caramel, chocolate, and dark fruit. Not much bitterness or roastiness until the finish, then just the slightest lingering kick. Bourbon is very subtle, which is fine with me.
Mouthfeel is soft and full-bodied, very smooth.
Overall, I'm impressed with this one. A tasty, nicely balanced sipper of a beer that I would definitely buy again.

A: Poured a nice jet black color with a nice foamy tan cap. Some good head retention here leaving some pretty nice tann ish colored curtains of lacing
S: Nose is roasted, chocolate, light coffee with some vanilla and bourbon. Promising.
T: A nice roastiness upfront. Chocolate is ushered in immediately followed by a light bourbon and vanilla. A nice sweetness strikes the palate and some dark fruits appear towards the end. The finish has a nice silky like texture, smooth with some roast.
M: Full bodied, well carbonated, silky and decadent. A nice creaminess as well.
O: The best beer Hale's has ever made, hands down. It is very balanced and oh so easy to drink.
