look: 4 | smell: 2 | taste: 2 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 2

Appearance: Pours a clear, yellow-gold body with a nice-looking cap of white foam.

Smell: Initial waft of skunk, so we'll let this one sit a spell. BAK! Simple, grainy nose with a worrisome hint of metal, like sniffing the insides of a CoinStar machine.

Taste: Grainy, listless maltiness with the standard cereal sweetness and smooth hint of rice. Faintly spicy, floral hop character and bitterness. It's around this point a severe, unpleasant taste of metal slips into the proceedings -- always a deal-breaker for me. Drying finish with a lingering taste of antique coins, paper clips, and a dungeon jailer's keys.

Mouthfeel: Light-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Drinkability: Not recommended! It's only appropriate the beer has won five medals when it seems to have been brewed with five metals.

Appearance – This one is a nice yellow in color with some orangish tints but little head.

Smell – The light rice and corn does indeed remind one of the classic American macro stinker. I can also pick up a hint of Budweiser and maybe a splash of MGD.

Taste – The flavors here are different from the nose. It’s like pure European grain with maybe a hint of hops. Maybe the nose was skunked from the green bottle. It’s not THAT bad.

Mouthfeel – This is actually a shade bigger than light-bodied with an easy carbonation and a surprising amount of dryness throughout.

Drinkability – This is a nice, even lager that won’t disappoint as long as you keep your expectations low.

Drinkable beer, this Bulgarian mystery is grassy and slightly sweet. Notes of bitter hops linger and grip your palate making for a unpleasant finish. Good, start but an iffie kind of beer. A good beer to have to show off to your friends, and a good beer to have in general for a collection.

This beer pours a clear golden colored with a medium to big white head when you pour it from an inch or so above the glass, giving it the standard lager look, IE Bud, Bud light, Coors, etc.

This light bodied beer has a sour lemon citrus with an added grain to grain malt aroma.

he taste is quite similar to the aroma with maybe a more hops bite and less of the grains coming through.

A light dry aftertaste is left behind making this beer pretty much the basic drink for the style, nothing special but then again nothing really bad either. Basically, same ol'

I dated a girl from Bulgaria for a few years. She didn't really drink but I did, so it was bound to happen that I would eventually have some of this.

Zagorka Special is not really all that special. It's not terrible. It's like a sweeter version of Heineken. Sometimes when I would get this it would be pretty skunky - the green bottle plus long and (knowing Bulgarians) probably not the greatest treatment / fastest shipping to get it all this way to Los Angeles.

Freshly brought back by CR. Yellow with rising bubbles. Above average tingley soda pop carbonation. Good foamy head with lace. Lawnmower beer. A tad metallic. Aroma is passable malt. Mouthfeel is a bit thin.Very drying but oddly drinkable. Better ythan a lot of Canadian macros.

Appearance: Honestly this is just a standard lager. But the pour was excellent with foam and theres a decent lacing effect. Swirling carbonation in the pour as well.

Smell: Almost no smell besides a slight mineral presence.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Way to sour and metallic. Mouthfeel is pretty thin and leaves a sugary feel in your mouth.

Drinkability: These lagers need to be clean. This one isn't.

Overall: I'm sure there are better Bulgarians.

A crystal clear golden body is capped by a frothy bright white head. Hundreds of tiny bubbles stream quickly upwards, adding to the head and helping to maintain a thin surface covering throughout most of the glass. Lacing around the glass is limited, but far from non-existant. The nose delivers some gently sweet grainy malt and a good dose of herbal and spicy hop. The body is medium, and the tight carbonation gently caresses the tongue. As it warms it becomes mildly creamy in the mouth. The flavor delivers exactly what the nose promised with a grainy malt that has just the right touch of sweetness juxtaposed against a bracing bitterness and spicy/herbal hop flavor. Wow! It's nice to find a Euro-style lager from the Balkan region with some real hop character. It finishes drying with a dollop of sweet malt that's immediately enveloped and overcome by an herbal and spicy hop flavor, and a gentle, lingering bitterness. Very nicely done. This is kind of like the rough-edged and angry older brother of Heineken. It's certainly not a great beer, but it's refreshing and a nice change of pace.

Zagorka: A euro-lager from Bulgaria, sold in a thick green half liter bottle. This beer was a pale golden color, with a thick white very long lasting head. The beer had a very strong skunked (sulphur) aroma. The taste was a pleasant surprise, as the skunked aroma did carry through to the taste. The beer was sweet, and had a creamy mouthfeel that is unusual for a euro-style lager. Very nice for the price.

Clear, pale yellow in hue; the liquid was that typical sickly color. Yuck. There wasn’t much animation; however the head was still two fingers tall. Head retention was very good; it slowly faded to a thin cap. I’m surprised. The subsequent lacing was very widespread and clumpy in an attractive disheveled kind of way. Overall, this is a good looking beer sans the blanched liquid.

The nose is sweet and bready. As soon as I popped the cap a light undercurrent of skunkiness leaked out. After a moment the green bottle affects were negligible. Back the beer; I really like the crisp hoppy notes, lightly earthy and grainy with a kiss of spice. Saaz hop are lovely. The potency is sensible. While the nose is not chatty I do like what I smell. It is not offensive; while not truly inviting I do what to take a sip. I’ll call the aromas better than typical for the style; that is always welcoming.

The palate is agreeable. Like the nose it lives on the simple side of life. Sweet, bready malts with a light grainy vibe; the hops are moderately bitter, earthy with a suggestion of spice and fruit. There isn’t much palate development from start to finish; I detect the same favors throughout. The finish is a perfect blend of breadiness, grain, and earth. This is a very nice beer. It is one of the better Pale Euro Lager I have had. I would drink this over Heineken/Beck’s/St. Pauli Girl 100 out of 100 times.

Medium/medium-light in body, moderately low carbonation but it feels natural on the tongue. The mouthfeel is fitting for the flavor profile; not too thin or watery. It is respectable.

I’ve had this beer twice since it enter the greater Omaha market. I don’t know why I would buy more. I could drink this during the summer and such but PEL is not a style I flock to. No matter, this beer is tasty and refreshing. It is well-made. My first beer from Bulgaria was pleasant. I purchased my bottle in Council Bluffs, IA. Try one.

A: Poured a clear, pale golden-orange with a 2 finger frothy white head that displayed very good retention while leaving vertical columns for lacing down the sides of the glass.

S: a tad skunky, some sour green vegetables most notable asparagus.

T: The flavor followed suit with some green vegetable stalks, dry corn and a touch of sourness with not much else beyond the initial impression. Labeled as a gold medal winner but fails to comment in what festival, and im guessing it was strickly local.

M: to say the least was light, watery thin and sour.

D: Drinkability, not good at all. One bottle is more then enough of a struggle if your willing to go the distance, I however got help from the kitchen sink. A pass needless to say and just keep on walking if you happen to spot this without giving it a second glance.

Serving type was a 16.9fl.oz

Appearance: Poured a golden yellow w/ a slight white head that dissipated fairly quickly only leaving a light ring along the outside

Smell: A grainy smell w/ some hops...slight metallic

Taste: There isn't a whole lot of flavour here to talk about. Slight grainy and hop flavour that is quickly washed away. That being said it is a very crisp and clean lager w/ out trying to do to many things. The flavours you taste at the begin are what you taste throughout the drinking experience

Mouthfeel: this is a very wispy drink. It goes down very smooth. It's what you expect from the smell of it

Drinkability: While not my favorite drink i've had, I do find it more enjoyable than some other Lagers I've tried.

The beer pours as one would expect from a typical lager/pilsner a sparklingly clear gold, portly white head, frothy in structure, the lace adequate to coat the glass. Nose is fresh, sweetly malt, with the start somewhat sweet, lots of malt, the top skeletal in feel. Finish is moderately acidic, modestly hopped, dry aftertaste and totally forgettable.

Green 500ml bottle, drank well before its use-by date.

Special my arse!

Why oh why do people import this stuff into the UK? We have gallons of our own crap lager without bringing more in.

Poured into a Veltins Pilsner 0.2l stemmed glass it looked a very pale gold, crystal clear with a medium sized white head. A typical lager/pilsner appearance, a little lighter than some, but not all.

Like most lagers there isn't a pronounced aroma, some barley notes maybe, but nothing much, so it gets my standard 3.

Tasteless and very dry, you could call it refreshing if you were going to be kind, which I am not.

Weak and thin on every count.

I only bought it to review, wish I hadn't.

500ml green bottle with a best before date of 3-31-14 (oh no).

A: Pours a clear yellow with a one-finger thick white head which fades to a thin cap and leaves splotches of lace behind.

N: Adjuncts (corn, rice) abound followed closely by a kind of stale "off" note. Yeasty, malty, grassy.

T: Crisp, yeasty, slight lemony citrus, herbal, faint fruity, grassy, mild sweetness.

M: Light body and medium carbonation. Finishes sweetly malted and a lingering "off" flavor.

O: Generally thin and watery. I hope this isn't the only offering for those living in Bulgaria because this really shouldn't be called "special" at all.

Appearance: Light, hazed, a couple bubbles floating to the sruface of the beer. OK loking head, about 1/2" that fades quickly.

Smell: Grassy and musty, cereal grains, pretty subpar, even for the style.

Taste: A little grassy malt, but alos some cooked vegetable flavors, musty and old. No freshness date on the bottle .

Mouthfeel: Not very well carbonated, leaes a metallic twang in the aftertaste.

Drinkability: A subpar euro lager, what else can i say? There seem to be an endless parade of beers that taste very similar to this.

Pours a two-fingered white head that stays and leaves a good lace. Pale, clear golden color. Very low carbonation. Light bodied. Skunky nose - what is it with green bottles?? Flavor is lacking, boring hoppy aftertaste. Bought this since it was a new country (#57) for me. $2 for a 500ml bottle, found at Colonial Spirits in Acton, Ma.

Interesting beer - rich golden color, big head, herbal aroma and good hoppy character. Taste is grainy, bitterness grows towards the end. Aftertaste is herbal, almost medicinal. Very drinkable as a thirst-quencher, properly chilled, much less drinkable as a long drink or at the dinner table. Altogether not bad, not bad at all...

Poured this Bulgarian brewed American Adjunct Lager from a bottle into a pint glass. Poured a clear straw color, produced an average white head, average retention and left little lacing on the glass. The aroma contained some traces of malted grain and cooked vegetables. Light in body, this brew had a foundation of grain and some slight hit of hops. Overall its not bad but there is nothing special about this brew.

1 litre green plastic bottle with plastic resealable screw-top acquired at a Picadilly supermarket in Sofia for right around 1 euro and served into a Staropramen pilsner glass in me friend's gaff in Sofia. Reviewed live. Expectations are low given the packaging. 5.0% ABV.

Served chilled. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: Pours a one finger wide head of off-white colour. Disappointingly thin. Lacks any creaminess or frothiness whatsoever. No lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Retention is poor - less than 15 seconds.

BODY: Clear yellow-copper of average vibrance. Clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

Appears undercarbonated. Not a very appealing appearance overall; I'm not looking forward to trying it.

AROMA: Ugh. Overly sweet and buttery. Clean but stale barley. Faint candy. Low quality hops. Grassiness. Vegetables. Grain. Sweet corn adjunct.

Off-putting. Average in strength.

No yeast character or alcohol is detectable.

TASTE/TEXTURE: Bleh. Low-quality cheap barley, overly sweet malts, corn adjunct, unwelcome grains, vegetables, and buttery notes. Poorly balanced and built, with poor depth of flavour. Average duration, amplitude, and intensity of flavour.

Smooth, wet, stale, and overcarbonated. Too syrupy and thick for the lack of flavour. This texture does not suit this beer's taste or style well at all. Unrefreshing.

OVERALL: It's hard to down given the low quality, but I guess at this price point it meets expectations. Not recommended. There are better budget brews out there, even in Bulgaria. Avoid this one.

Low D-

This beer was served in a pub glass.

Appearance: The beer pours a clear slightly fizzy straw yellow coloration. The beer has a thin white head that quickly resolves.

Smell: The beer smells ever so slightly lemon and pine peeking out. The skunk however is all over the place holy phosphurus Batman!

Taste: The beer didnt have alot of flavors; however, the beer had a dominating astringent acidic flavor. Just plain yuck man!

Mouthfeel/ Drinkability: The beer is astringently watery. I tried to drink this one cold, warmer and almost room temperature. I opened the second bottle I had of this and couldnt drink that one. You guessed it two beers used as drain cleaner.
