Um...so I have only been writing about beers on this platform thus far, but thought that for my first review of an actual brewery, there would be nothing more fitting than one in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, named after the legendary Chinggis Khaan himself! WestCoastLibations is as international as it is legit, spanning the globe in search of quality beers, be they on the West Coast of California, New Zealand, Korea, or in this case, Mongolia.
Situated just North of the main square, the brewery is actually attached to the "Chinggis Club" which is really a restaurant and bar. It was from there then that I was able to see the inside of the brewery, through two perfectly placed windows in the restaurant, which peer into the operational side of the beer making. Rather small, but big enough to supply seemingly every bar in Ulaanbaatar with draft beer, the brewery puts out two choices: a "Pilsener", and a "Classic Dark". Likewise, there are two sizes available: .33L or .5L. I went with the latter.
Fun fact: UB is the coldest capital on the planet, in average temperature. Regardless of this, and simultaneously because of this, both the Pilsner and Dark work perfectly. They are as smooth as the Silk Road established by their namesake, Mr. Khaan, and each pour similarly, with a distinctive head, allowing for breathing in that Blue Sky, under which they were created. Just the right corresponding color, they both settle nicely on the palate, leaving little to no remnants of their existence once finished. Easy does it in Mongolia, and the beers here seemingly adhere to this same thought process.
The Chinggis Club for its part, acts as the perfect setting too. German meets Mongol is the motif here, with families, couples, groups and individuals, spaced throughout, doing their thing. My visit was around noon, so I cannot comment on whether or not it gets cray cray during the night time hours, but from my own experiences, it was calm, cool, and collected, the perfect place to stop in at, if you ever find yourself in the Central Asian utopia of Mongolia. A welcomed addition to any trip, I try in stop in at local beer-making establishments, wherever I find myself on this great big Earth. And, after my experiences at the Chinggis Beer Brewery, I am grateful for being able to visit not only Mongolia, but within it, this little microcosm known as the Chinngis Club!
