The craft beer movement in Mexico is handicapped by the exclusivity deals that most restaurants sign with the beer giants like Modelo and Tecate.

But a handful of dedicated breweries do pursue the craft diligently nonetheless, taking innovative approaches such as working deals with Tequila distilleries to create some interesting brews.

The TJ Beer restaurant/brewery is not one of those places. Quite the opposite - their selection of beer seems aimed at compromising between the bland pilsners made by major Mexican breweries and people looking for some real flavor in their beer.

Morena is a good example - it promises carmelized malt and chocolate flavors but doesn't taste much different from Modelo Negra, with possibly a bit more roasted malt for coloring. Like most of the TJ Beer lineup, Morena is under 5% ABV (4.5 - I think Modelo Negra is something like 5.4% ABV).

I had the sampler flight at their restaurant about 18 months ago, so it's possible that their brewing philosophy has changed. It's a decent looking brewpub and the food is fine - had guacamole and carne res (beef) tacos, but let's just say I wouldn't come here for the grub. And definitely not the beer.

La Taberna TJ (the Tijuana Tavern) gets its fair share of clients, as Tijuana is not big on the pub scene and has few places to offer. It is the only pub I know in Tijuana. The darkest beer is their "moreno" (or "dark"), which is comparable to Pete's Wicked Ale in color and Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale in flavor.

The food is pretty decent. I wouldn't recommend planning your meal here. The Hungry Hiker Web site will be a better source of info if you want to seek Tijuana's best food.

I wouldn't recommend planning a trip to Mexico around this pub. But, if you happen to be visiting Tijuana, or making a side trip to Tijuana while you're in San Diego, then it would be worthwhile to check it out. It's definitely interesting to see a Latino population getting down with some microbrew action. It was worth my trip to get another notch on my pub belt, and I even take a few of their beers home with each visit. Each of my friends are impressed that Mexico is pumping out decent brew from this brewery, but don't expect it to match against the tastiest beers among your favorites.
