Weak, washed-out amber with a fair number of small to medium sized particles floating about. The crown of foam is better by far. It's as rich and as creamy white as a piece of expensive stationery, with a texture that other macro lagers would kill for. It also leaves arching strands of lace around the entire circumference of the glass. Maybe I'll just look at it from a bird's eye view so the head obscures the beer.

Yep, that's a macro lager nose all right. Each sniff brings slightly sweet, reasonably fresh grain and a wee whiff of floral hops. It's nothing special, but at least it isn't offensive.

Ditto on the palate, although the beer tastes more stale and bland than it smells. Halida has flavor, but it lacks any sort of mouthfilling volume, anything of substance that I can wrap my taste buds around. Maybe that's asking too much of a macro lager, but hey, good examples of this style do exist, even if they aren't plentiful.

I keep trying to come up with something more descriptive than 'grain'. The weak hoppiness that I picked up in the nose is still present, but it's even most ghost-like on the palate. The fact that the beer is slightly more sweet than bitter keeps it palatable. The mouthfeel is no help at all since it's lackluster as well.

According to the label, South East Asia Brewery is located in Hanoi. I wonder if Hanoi Jane (Fonda) drinks this stuff and reminisces about her salad days as an anti-war activist? The bottom line: Halida is probably the best beer from a Communist country that one could ever hope for. Take that for what it's worth.

It's pretty decent beer for it's style. It's just that the style always tastes like a wet dog. Of course it's grainy and vegital...it's supposed to I guess. There are some interesting fruitiness (green apples, appricots, and peach) going on, but not enough to mask the American Lager qualities. Aromas are about half malty and half grainy. The beers body is where it is saved. The beer is round and moderately full. It holds its retention well and stayed refreshing down the the bitter end. Herbally hopped for a bit of tea-like character and grassyness. Finishes mainly crisp, but with a residual sweetness and corn flavor that hurts.

This beer can be summed up into one word, "bland" or "boring" should do the trick. I try to go into every beer with high hopes of having something really great come from it but I have yet to find an Adjunct Lager that really impresses me. This beer pours out as a golden color which is decent but there is virtually no head on it at all. Mouthfeel is flat much like I suspected from the look of it. The tastes of Malts are the most pronounced in the beer. This is one I can skip if I see it on shelves somewhere for purchase.

Halida beer pours a clear yellow-gold body beneath a short head of creamy white foam. The head retention and lacing are average. It has a very generic beer aroma to it with a dull sweetish malt and very background hops, and it's clear that there's some adjunct in use here. It's clean, however, and smells pretty much like any other well-made macro lager that uses a fair amount of adjunct and goes real easy on the hops. It's medium-light bodied and crisp in the mouth. The flavor offers a clean, lightly sweet but far from grainy maltiness with just a thread of nondescript hop flavor running through it. It finishes short-but-drying as a bit of sweet, but basically flavorless, malt sticks in the mouth. Average beer. You could drink this without noticing it except for the burp that followed.

The beer pours a pale gold color with a thin white head that fades to spotty lacing. The aroma is average. It has a light pale malt scent along with some hints of adjuncts; probably rice. It has a sweet smell; pretty clean. The taste is average as well. It has a light pale malt flavor that goes down easy and finishes clean with some residual sweetness. It pretty good, but it lacks character. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a low bodied beer with adequate/good carbonation. It is a little heavier than most Asian lagers, but it drinks well.

11.2 ounce brown bottle, with "expiration" dating on the label. Pours very light, just slightly yellowed, minor white head and lacing. Initially prickly on the tongue, seems highly carbonated, as medium sized bubble continue to stream to the surface. Light body, minimal malt, slightly hoppy in the finish. Also picking up some metallic, nasty flavors. You can find better beer then this. Would hit the spot in an extreme heat wave or while pushing a lawn mower.

Tasted in one of the best and most authentic Vietnamese restaurants on Kingsland Road, London. In fact, it's the first Vietnamese beer I've ever tasted, alas, this equally authentic beer is not nearly as impressive as the cuisine... The BB date of the bottle is 05/09/06, and I tasted it "before" enjoying the cuisine at the restaurant, so as to keep a clean palate for the beer.

It pours a very pale straw colour, like a watered-down honey drink, coming with a thin beer head and gentle fizz. The nose has some cane-sugar elements, on top of the lightest lager malts I could ever imagine. And where's the hop? On the palate there's suggestion of light malts with its slightly artificial flavour of grains and hop-flakes. Interesting metalic feel in the end. No structure and no depth, just plain and bland. Watery and overly thin-bodied for a 5.0%abv. lager. This is definitely not a well-made beer and one of the worst in its class I've ever encountered.

P.S. My Vietnamese flatmate told me that "Hanoi Beer" is much better than this one after I got back home, but I'm afraid it'd take me a long time to recover from the nightmare of drinking this beer before moving on...

Pours a two finger white head that fades to nothing in minutes and leaves no lace. Crystal clear amber color. Light carbonation and light bodied. Hoppy nose. Starts sweet but that fades to a flavor like old shoe leather. I wasn't expecting much and didn't find it in this. Bought this only because it is brewed in Hanoi - I know that's lame. $1.40 for a 330ml bottle from John's Market Tigard, Or. Best by Jun 2006 - hadn't soured.

A: Poured a clear, pale corn Budweiser yellow wit a thin, fizzy white capping.

S: Hardly any aroma was detected, with only very light herbal notes and fresh greens. Truly macro-like in nature making Budweiser smell like a pale ale.

T: sweet corn mash and a metallic tang. The overall flavor was light and watery with hardly any distinctions. Bland malting and hopping would be giving this to much credit.

M: much the same, bland, thin, watery with a slight vinegar sourness and metallic tang.

D: bland. Why punish yourself with the full 12 oz. Please tell me you didn't get the sixpack?

Crystal clear, light straw colour with a small, creamy and longlasting white head.

Pretty much nil aroma. There is a touch of grain but that's it.

Fairly standard adjunct lager with a touch of sweetness with very mild bitterness. There is also a hint of generic hops. Not bad for what it is but not a great beer.

Medium-light body with moderate carbonation. Fine.

Looks, if I was in Viet Nam I would be thoroughly enjoying this beer. It is a thirst quencher and nothing more.

Appearance – Very light yellow in color with a two-inch head that went down quickly.

Smell – The aroma is singularly grain and very faint.

Taste – This has a very light ricey grain flavor. There seems to be a bit of creamed corn in there as well.

Mouthfeel – The lack of carbonation or a dry mouthfeel left this one wanting.

Drinkability – This beer didn’t have anything offensive in it, but it was very dull and boring.

Pours gold with a quickly fading head.
Nose shows hay, cereal, vegetal notes. Not much going on.
Lots of sweet malt in the way of flavours, but its pretty light and one-dimensional. Some faint cereal and spicy notes show but not much else. Pretty much no bitterness.
Could use loads more carbonation to dry out that cloying finish.

Im definately not expecting too much from this but never tried so why not and it pours a crystal clear apple cider hue which leaves a frothy two finger macro head that is gone as it appears and no lacing, the smell is basically a pub in the morning with the aromas of spilt alcohol and stagnant stale smoke mixed with kornmalt, the mouthfeel is basically water but more refreshing only just and the tastes are insipid and bland with kornmalt and rice water being most prominent and overall the only reason it got higher overall than it should of is because i can see tourists drinking this like bintang in Bali and probably just as cheap but for me some things should be left on hoilday cheers.

Bought a can of this from Kaldi Market in Saitama, Japan. Poured into a Baird pint glass. Semi-cloudy wheat-hued bubbly beer with a thick white head. The smell was mainly rice with a bit of hops, but otherwise a bit metallic and abrasive. The taste matched the scent... ricey with a bit of metal, possibly because of the can but more likely because of the brew quality. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this beer, even though it is drinkable in a pinch. I didn't even want to finish the can, though.

A: Pours a pale yellowcolor with a big fizzy head that fades fairly quickly to just traces of lacing.

S: Aroma is quite cleanand faint with a bit of citrus, malt sweetness and grain.

T: Taste is also on the light side with some malt sweeness, bit of citrus and grain.

F: Light body and fairly smooth.

O: Typical non-offensive Pale Lager. Probably goes best with spicy cousine.

Ok - must admit this was the cheapest option on a mixed 10 to keep price down overall.

Looks OK - but SO clear. Straw body - One finger head dies too quickly. Some lace.

Aromas are muted and sweet. Some mineral water on nose(!)

Taste is all corn. Not good at all, even by macro standards. And then in come the brewed pennies in the bottom of the barrel. Metal!!!!

Mouthfeel is not bad, a touch astringent. Thin.

I got what I paid for. There so so many better Asian macros as well.

A - One finger of fluffy white head disolves quickly. Pale yellow body active with effervescence. A few traces of lacing.

S - Corn, rice and the faintest hint of yeast.

T - Distant corn and water. Extraordinarily plain.

M - Water thin, medium carbonation.

O - Not distasteful, but extremely uninteresting and featureless.

Highly needed beer in the mini bar after 30 hours of travel.

A_as lightly golden straw coloured as I have seen a beer. Decent sized head settles into a white slick. A heady stream of bubbles makes it look refreshing.

S_Straw and some grassy hops.

T_Light in the taste department, slightly medicinal but mostly light grains and mild grassy hops. Inoffensive but not bad nor good.

M_very light bodied with a medium carbonation. Would prefer a bit more for a beer so light.

D_typical macro Asian Lager. I did like the pull top

Cool bottle - rather noble looking label (different than pictured).

Pours a palish, waifish golden with a white foamy head that retires early.

Smell is of sweet, sweet malt. Like RoyalT mentioned - its very singular in its aroma.

The taste is mild, pleasant and sweet. Less carbonation bite and more malt flavor (and a bit less adjunct flavor) than most American lagers. Nice summer sipper, drinks easily.
