I've never had Lithuanian beer before, so this is another country to scratch off the list, but I also haven't reviewed an EPL in a while which was my main reason for picking up this 500 mL bottle. This isn't my favourite style but I do enjoy a refreshing pale lager every now and then.

Pours a pale straw yellow topped with 2 fingers of foamy head that dissipates fairly quickly. A sizeable collar of lacing remains around the edge of the glass. Smell is of barley malt, and extremely faint. I would be forced to use my imagination if I wanted to use any other terms to describe the smell... not off-putting but not very enticing either.

Taste is very similar - grainy barley malts, with some mild adjunct flavor. It's very clean-tasting, but that's basically all there is to it. Slightly sweet finish; not much hop presence. Light-bodied with moderate carbonation. A little sticky in the mouth afterward.

This is easy to throw back and quite refreshing, but I'd be lying if I said it was interesting. If EPLs are your thing, there's no reason not to try this one - it's at least above average.

[Updated Dec. 22. 2013]

I picked up another bottle for no reason in particular (ok, maybe it was the cool embossed cap on top). As far as Eastern European national lager brands go, Svyturys Ekstra is one of the better ones, with a decent backbone of pale, bready malts and a light, grassy finish that ends dry. Reminds me of some of my preferred Polish lager brands.

Final Grade: 3.30, a B-.

A surprisingly average (I expected garbage for the price) Dortmunder style lager from Lithuania. Pours piss yellow with outstanding carbonation streaming and a generous white cloud that dissipates to a ¼ inch. Minimal lacing. Aroma is quarried rock, dust, lime, corn, powdered sugar, and iron. Taste is biting but quickly turns to corn sweetness with attached rice notes. Metallic and rock notes persist. Body is very light. Drinkability is pretty low. After a few gulps my stomach is becoming queasy. It’s not as bad as some of the reviews would make it sound but how on Earth did this win a gold at the world beer cup?

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #54 (July 2011):

While the clear golden sunshine hue is stunning, it’s missing pretty much all of the head that was there. Fresh-cut hay and cracker-like maltiness in the aroma. Uniform smoothness does well to add a huge refreshing quality. Lots of pale malt flavor, with hints of baked apple and delicate floral hoppiness. Perhaps the slightest suggestion of sulphur here, but it’s really not something that pops out. Very clean throughout, with a finish that lands dry. The label notes that it is unpasteurized, which is certainly noticed. A standup lager—worth a go.

Your average lager beer at best. Poured a clear golden color with a great pillowy head that lasted. Smelt of grain and gym socks. Tasted thick and malty with a slight ammount of grain in there. Not that bad of a lager but nothing that stands out too much either.

You'll have to forgive this for being a short and shallow review, it dates back to when I just started recording my tastings and I hadn't quite gotten a feel for things yet ;)

Appearance: golden colour; decent carbonation but the head fades fast leaving little to no lace

Aroma: slightly sweet and very light, floral if anything

Taste & Mouthfeel: somewhat metallic, sweet, a very short finish; light body, feels under-carbonated

Overall: a very average lager that feels like it would get tired fast

A pour out of the gold labeled and foiled brown bottle produces a soft pale yellow brew with just a slight opaqueness to it. On top of it sits a white head, initially just over a finger, which offers a fair amount of retention before receding to a foam that leaves a light touch of thin lacing here and there.
Grassy and earthy hops are present on the nose, perhaps just under a grains presence. A bit of zesty lemon is evident as well. Some hay and an adjunct touch linger as well. This aroma is light, but not unpleasant and could simply be improved by the removal of the rice in place of a pale malt.
The taste follows suit, with lemon zest remaining throughout and a more mentionable hops flavor than most Euro imports of the like. Otherwise, mostly grainy and grassy.
This beer starts crisp but gets quite smooth, with a fuller body than I expect, more on the light side of medium. Carbonation is moderate and adds to a somewhat thicker feeling as well as the initial crisp nip.
Take it or leave it, this is one of the better mass-produced overseas EPLs I've had.

500ml, more or less unique slope-shaped bottle. This stuff is crazy popular with Lithuanian ex-pats, so time to see what that's really all about.

This beer pours a clear, medium golden yellow colour, with three fingers of puffy, and rather thinly foamy eggshell white head, which leaves a bit of snow rime lace around the glass as it quickly subsides.

It smells of gritty, grainy pale malt, flaked corn, grassy, leafy, and weedy hops, and a faint whiff of gasohol. The taste is more mixed pale malt and corny graininess, a further, weird as shit corn flakes soaked in cheap vodka essence, warm musty, leafy, and dead grassy hops, and an ethereal stale citrus fruitiness.

The bubbles are somewhat tight, yet generally frothy, the body a sturdy medium weight, kind of sticky, and smooth enough, a slightly weedy astringency nipping at its heels. It finishes well off-dry, the dumbed-down malt still doing well, not exactly bumping into walls, or anything, as those indeterminate petrol-like boozy esters start to finally waft off.

Another so-so, half-assed national corporate lager, trotted out as the best a country has to offer (like a Budweiser screed), once again. There are real malt lager tendencies here, but the corners that have been cut almost glow with precision and obviousness. As far as I'm concerned, if this engenders good feelings about the land that you bailed on, then the rest of our provincial complement is all yours.

Pours a neon yellow with a fat, lumpy, white foam. Though it's obscured by a noticable smog.
Reeks of granite mines, sulfur, powdered sugar, and corn or rice.
Starts with a sugary, adjuncted sweetness. Then onto burnt plastics, and rippingly harsh minerality. Concludes with a cabbage-like vegetable sense. Sandstone at the close. No hops to speak about, aside from a pseudo lemon cleaner note of unknown origin.
Light bodied, but it's waterly, fizzy texture manages to carry an assortment of atrocities.
However, it did flow smoothly down my kitchen sink.
This is the worst thing I've had recently.

Why our province's royal liquor bureacracy bring this in over 500 better beers. Its cheap to import? There is a demand? The brochure said it won some Eastern Europe medals? Pale, serviceable, drinkable. Foaming pour. Lemon, sugary malt. Burning alcohol.
2.5 years later, watery.

A - This golden clear brew would be pretty boring and average looking if it weren't topped with a big fluffy bone-white head. This monstrosity of white fluff reduces to a bubbly finger after a moment, and leaves a little bit of soapy lace on the glass.

S - Mild toffee and yeast mingle with some grassy hops. Smells fresh, like laundry hung outside in the spring air.

T - More assertive than the nose, this is fresh and malty with some nice grassy hop accents. Reminds me a bit of Worther's Original candies, topped with some spicy mustard.

M - Light bodied, firm, crisp, and tight. Carbonation is easy going, and it finishes fairly dry. Nice.

D - Drinkable, if a little bit forgettable. Not a bad basic lager by any means. I wish our macro lagers were even slightly this tasty here in the US.

Wow, Lithuanians know how to make beer! Who knew! The Ekstra pours a crystal-clear straw-gold body with yellow highlights beneath a full head of bright white foam that holds really well and leaves some very nice, wide rings of lace about the glass. The nose is clean and bright with sweet, adjunct malt and grassy hops. It's lightly crisp in the mouth with a moderate carbonation and dextrinous, medium body. The flavor delivers a semi-grainy, obviously adjunct enhanced, semi-sweet maltiness; backed by a solid bitterness; and peppered with lemony, grassy, and herbal hop flavors. It finishes dry, hoppy, and refreshing. This is actually a great beer for a summer BBQ; and it also pairs well with a wide variety of foods including some Indian and Thai foods.

Picked up a bottle at EuroMarket. The skunking was a bit rough on the aroma, but after about 20 minutes it let up and there was a touch of toasty grains. The beer reminded me of other northern Euro lagers, like Okocim, as it has a little more character than Heineken, but is still no pilsner. You can actually taste the barley and feel a balancing hops bitterness. However, given the bad condition of the beer, I probably wouldn't drink this unless I were actually in Lithuania.

Poured into tulip

A-Kind of artificial looking. Perfectly clear pale gold with a perfectly white foam on top.

S- Don't really like this, sweet alcoholic grain. Cardboard hops.

T-Kind of like a very good Budweiser. Less foul. A bit of apple juice. Alcohol is pretty strong and doesn't really taste good.

M- Very smooth. Medium carbonation. Foams up nicely. Not dry.

D- Smooth mouthfeel helps it go down nicely but... I don't know it's winter right now and this isn't cold enough so yeah... not drinking well at all. I don't want any more.

You really got to drink this one cold. Started getting hard to drink halfway through the first glass. I see no reason to buy this ever again. Buy any other canned Euro Lager you can find in Dépanneurs instead.

Clear yellow body with a ton of suspended particles. Thin and whispy head.

Smell is weak and simple, grain and a touch of lemon.

Taste is equally normal. Some lemon and grain. It's definitely a lager through and through. Not a bad beer, just average in almost every way.

Mouthfeel is light, but crisp and refreshing. This is a decent hot weather beer.

Good drinkability due to the relatively low abv, light body, and simplicity. No worries of palate fatigue with this one.

In the category of "it is what it is." Basic euro lager, clean and crisp. I can easily imagine this beer in bad condition, skunked and foul, but my bottle was fine. Fair's fair!

I've certainly had American craft lager at similar quality and a worse price point. Bottom line, worth a try... if you trust your retailer, give it a whirl.

Poured from a brown 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of malts, some sweetness. Taste is crisp, malty, a tad sweet, quite refreshing. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and is very drinkable. Overall this is a good quality beer.

Pale lager.

A: clear, pale straw color.

S: Lots of sweet corn on the nose.

T: a ton of buttery corn, with some light bread notes and herbal hopping. There is a buttery corn malt fade on the finish with some sourness as well and a slight lemon zest to round it out. Upon warming the malt is noticeably more sour with some raw vegetable flavor sneaking in. best drunk cold.

M: Mouthful is very light as expected, very slick and buttery.

D: Overall a beer is very sweet, somewhat bland and non offensive to the taste buds. Would drink this over any of the American macros if no other option was available but in limited quantity.

Pours gold with a large, white head.
Nose shows hay and bready malt. Also some faint vegetal notes in the background.
Similar flavours; hay, sweet vegetal notes some light spicy hops. A faint industrial note appears in the finish.
Could us more carbonation.
