When at a family gathering in Roslindale, I decided to go for a beer run. My family is mostly just swill drinkers, so I asked where the nearest packie with "Fancy" beer might be.

I was referred to Macy's on Centre Street in West Roxbury.

Centre street is becoming quite the area for things of more refined taste, including restaurants, shops, and I guess, even liquor stores now.

Not very spacious and somewhat cramped on the inside.

Beer aisle located on along the back wall, opposite the coolers.

Bombers line the topshelf, including Racer 5, BBC, Chimay, Duvel. I good assortment of local and imports.

Very surprising to find a beer selection reminscent of a more downtown Boston atmosphere out there in West Roxbury.

My new go-to place when I am in that area.

Horrible, just horrible, disinterested customer service on more than one occasion. I used to shop there regularly; a mix between that and JP Blanchards. I forgave surly and even rude behavior longer than most people might have, but this place really wore me out. Rather consistently, I was treated as if my presence was more of a temporary inconvenience than a potential transaction.

I don't know why I kept going there for so long. Especially when there are three liquor stores within spitting distance that have equivalent or better selections and lower prices. The store is also cramped and has a horrible date rotation in craft beer. They also seem to easily run out of stock on relatively common beers. The wine staff seems to know their stuff, but the beer people are clueless, despite the decent, though spotty, selection.

Anyhow, as I said, I have been treated rudely at Macy's in the past, but after this most recent event I finally informed the manager that I wasn't likely to shop there again. He replied: "I don't care. You can shop wherever you want." Okay then, I'll go somewhere else. Great customer service model.

This is my father in law's beer store of choice and I can see why. The prices here are very reasonable for the area. The beer is in a cramped back aisle of the store. There is plenty of variety of micro brews. I never seem to find any hard to get, exotic beers here, but they do hit the high points of a lot of breweries, local and international. The service here is really good. There is always someone who is pleasant in the beer aisle asking if you want assistance and offering recommendations. This is what I would describe as a good neighborhood beer store. Nothing to go out of the way for, but I would be a regular if I lived closer.

This is the second beer store that I've checked out in WR now that I've moved here. Good location, right near Roche Bros., so there's plenty of chances to pop in for a look around. There's a nice sized beer section in the back. One whole wall of cooler, with a decent selection of six packs, but not many 12 packs. The selection of bombers is what would draw a beer geek here. The entire back shelf is craft beer bottle. The selection is probably a 70/30 split favoring American beers over imports. All the major craft brewers represented, with a good selection from each. Prices actually seemed to be a bit lower that Blanchard's down the street, maybe 50 cents to a dollar lower. Service has been good. Both times visiting, I was greeted by an employee in the beer aisle, and I was greeted nicely at the register on Saturday night. I think that I would have no problem turning a grocery store visit to Roche into a beer run at Macy's also.

Macy's is good place to find some great beers. I grew up and Boston and this place is responsible for introducing me to good beer a two that I found there.

The selection is really good. For the amount of shelf space set aside for the beer section Macy's does quite well to carry many good brews from Rouge, Stone, Pete's, Sierra Nevada and many others. Macros too.

The service was not the best but not the worst in the world.

The value is quite good. The prices are better than the other stores in the area. This place is worth a stop in if your in the area.

From the outside this place looks a little run down, and plastered with Bud, Coors, Miller etc. advertisements for weekly specials. One of those places where you "judge a book by it's cover". Well I was pleasantly surprised by their craft brew isle. They have a decent selection and a large selection form around the world, some good Belgian bottle fermented stuff I haven’t seen anywhere around Boston, and good craft stuff from America. I was mostly surprised by the amount of seasonal they had. It seems for every brewery they carried, they carried their current seasonal, tons of seasonals. I saw a couple of free glasses with purchase. It is definitely a place I will stop in once in a while to see whats new, and what I havent seen anywhere else in the boston area.

There are many liquor stores in my local area that are cleaner, more spacious, have better selections and excell in quality over Macy's in West Roxbury. So why is it the store that I visit most frequently? Qutie a simple reason-- they give you a free Belgian beer glass any time you purchase one of their Belgian beers. My glassware collection contains at least 6 different glasses from there and it seems they have a new style almost weekly. I really feel that this is great marketing on their part.

If you're not farmiliar with W. Roxbury, it is really a "townie" town stuck about ten or fifteen years behind the times in terms of quality restaurants, bars, shops...so the selection surprised me the first time I checked it out (on my way to the best supermarket in the area- Roche Bros.) They don't have anything that you won't find elsewhere, but they have all the requisite locals, some Dogfish (actually had a big display near the front door on my last visit), Stone, North Coast...usual suspects from England, Germany, Belgium. Some of the Belgians I've picked up for the glass included Kwak, Tripel Karmeliet, Val-dieu, Maredsous... nice solid stuff.

The service is just fine. There are always a few registers open for a speedy checkout and there's one fellow in particular (seems to be the beer guy) who's gone out of his way to check for more glasses or fiill me in on the specials (if he's not on this site, he should be).

So the store's crowded, could use some updating, and is in W. Roxbury, but as long as I keep being treated right I'm content for this to be my everyday beer shop.
