After all the hoopla about this beer I finally saw it and grabbed a six pack. The comparisons to Heady are a bit much. Limbo in a far more approachable beer. Great nose, and the taste is lovely but not the punch in the face of hops that Heady brings. And as much as Heady hides its 8% abv, Limbo hides its 7.6% even more. Super easy to drink (I'm on my 3rd as I write this).

I'd still pick IPAs from the "big 3" when available, but Limbo's quality and value proposition for an every day IPA is tough to beat.

On-tap at Miracle of Science in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

A- Body is hazy golden yellow. One finger white head, fair retention, rings upon rings of lacing. Looks good, and after walking the entire Freedom Trail and then walking to the MIT campus, I was ready for a beer.

S- Grapefruit, citrus, pineapple and pale malt, in that order. Smells quite hoppy indeed.

F- Clean citrus hops come out as grapefruits and oranges with a leafiness. The bread and biscuit pale malts complement the hops nicely enough but this is definitely not the paragon of balance. Which is definitely not a bad thing here.

M- Medium bodied with a dry finish. Citrus bitterness on the finish is not terribly high; in fact my IPA-hating wife considered this one to be quite tasty as it is the bitterness that she usually objects to.

O- Very good IPA with plenty of hop character; enjoyed this one a lot with my lunch on a humid hot day.

Appearance: Slightly hazy orange copper color with a foamy one finger off white head

Smell: Huge blend of tropical and citrus fruits (Mango, tangerines, apricots, oranges, pineapple, grapefruit). Pine resin comes through too, as well as slight onion and alcohol which gives my nose a nice burn. Really a lovely smelling beer

Taste: A ton of tropical notes upfront, malt sweetness in the middle, and citrusy grapefruit to finish it off. Pine resin throughout. Burps are great as well!

Mouthfeel: Medium body; Oily and extremely smooth with a slight bitter finish

Overall: I never thought id say this, but LT made an A beer with this one! It's unbelievable to me actually. I think they hired someone from Stone or something to brew this. This is a incredibly clean smelling and tasting IPA. All the notes you want in a IPA is in this beer. Tropical, citrus, pine, with just enough sweet malts to round it out. Also one of the best IPAs I have found in its price range (Hop Nosh being another example) and would make for a perfect go to. Rivals some of the best on the market. Definitely recommended!

Had cold and on tap at The Purple Pub in Williamstown, MA. As in other reviews I've made, I'll make the disclaimer that I think I have relatively insensitive taste buds, so I tend to like big beers, strong coffee, spicy food. Someone with more gentle or discerning taste buds might feel differently.

Appearance: A pleasant, slightly hazy burnt orange. Moderate carbonation and a nice lacing on the glass.

Smell: Brown rice, but no other notes per se. No hops at all. Don't get much here, maybe partially because the beer was quite cold.

Taste: Doesn't taste bad at all, but as with the smell, not a punch to the flavor. I get that soft brown rice flavor again, all the way through, a little lemon in the middle as the beer warmed up, and a pleasant but subtle hops bite lingering at the end. Fairly dry and crisp, never sweet.

Mouthfeel: Moderate carbonation, and the lingering hops for a second or two is pleasant. Would prefer a little more malt sweetness personally.

Quite drinkable, no off-tastes or nasty surprises. I could see this working well for a lot of people as a session beer. Just personally prefer my IPAs to have strong, opposing flavors that come to a balanced consensus like those doubles on the West Coast have (Racer 5, Maximus,...).

Bitterness Units: 80, ABV: 7.6%, Malts: 2-row Pale, Wheat and Caramel Malt, Hops: Bravo, Chinook, Galaxy, Mosaicrn, Availability: Year-round.

Had this on tap at Foxwoods. Not the best IPA I've ever had but it is the best I've had from Long Trail. Much better than their standard IPA. I'm a big Double Bag fan but haven't found any of their other offerings to my liking until now. Glad it's a year round brew.

A - Hazy orange, decent head, good lacing

S - HUGE tropical fruitiness. Mangoes, tangerines, papaya, white grapes....smells like fruit punch. Phenomenal.

T - Follows the nose but not as over the top. Tropical fruitiness, some uber-fresh hop dankness you only get with super fresh IPA's, Citrus flavors, and ending with grapefruit and aspirin astringency.

M - Pretty light bodied for the ABV%, perfect amount of carbonation.

O - The best Long Trail beer I have ever had the pleasure of having. I've tried mostly everything they have had to offer with the exception of a few of their big beers but this is the first offering to thoroughly impress me. If this is the direction they are going to start taking, I am on board. Fantastic IPA, great price, and an aroma to die for. The burps taste just as good.

12 ounce bottle, bottled 1-22-14

Pours clouded lighter amber, long lasting lite khaki head. Leaves generous fine and high sheeting.

Grapefruit nose, juicy and pungent.

Super tasty IPA. Loads of citrus, grapefruit, grapefruit and more grapefruit and more of a minor lime note.

Long trail's finest hour. This is well crafted and well worth seeking out. Finally a world class IPA from Vermont that I dont have to Vermont for and dont need to know the secret handshake to purchase a few six packs of.

3.81/5  rDev -7.3%

Appearance: 1/4 inch head, gold in color, medium carbonation, clear

Smell: pine and citrus fruits

Taste: big citrus fruits--grapefruit stands out but so does lemon, nice malty and cracker backbone

Mouthfeel:sweetish start with bitter middle and end, medium bodied with medium carbonation

Overall: A nice and citrusy IPA. Hoppy but not overly so. I could do a couple of these. One of the better beers I have had from Long Trail in some time.
