Real India Pale Ale (IPA), as it was first brewed in the days of the British Empire, was not the carefully filtered brew that we call IPA beer today. The first IPAs were unfiltered and featured extra hops and higher strength as a preservative for the long trip from England to the colony of India. Our Traditional IPA ale is naturally carbonated, dry-hopped & unfiltered like the old days.

On tap @ the Long Trail Brewing Company (Bridgewater Corners, VT) on 7/17/11. Served in a pint glass.
Pours a hazed gold, with a ½ finger of bright-white head. This retains with a thin creaminess, ringing the sides of the glass with sticky swathes of lacing. The aroma smells grassy and lightly musty, with an earthy bitterness in the nose. Malts mingle with citric fruit to add an underlying fruity tang. This is decent.
The taste has a fresh earthy bitterness to it, which is surrounded on the sides by a soft citric fruitiness and sweet grainy malts. The finish is moderately dry with some lingering earthy tones. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a smooth lively crispness to the carbonation. At just under 6.0%, this does feel a tad light for an IPA but it overall isn’t too bad.
Having this on draft at the brewery I think helped me appreciate this beer a bit more. It’s got a fresh English hop bill with a bit of an edge to it, yet still stays nice and approachable. This would be a good starter IPA to introduce someone to. I’m going to be giving this one a second look down the road.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance is a golden colored body with no head and leaves a ringy spotty laciness around the glass. The smell has hops, subdued pine, mild malt background. The taste is bitter through the hops and the pine, subdued malts coming through as the beer warms. The palate is about a medium, sessionable, bitter yet malty coating over the mouth and tongue, no aftertaste, watery finish. Overall, not a bad IPA, good.
