English India Pale Ale (IPA) |  6.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Real India Pale Ale (IPA), as it was first brewed in the days of the British Empire, was not the carefully filtered brew that we call IPA beer today. The first IPAs were unfiltered and featured extra hops and higher strength as a preservative for the long trip from England to the colony of India. Our Traditional IPA ale is naturally carbonated, dry-hopped & unfiltered like the old days.

Long Trail was a staple in my early beer drinking days... LT was a game changer in the Vermont beer world (kudos). Then came the IPA... at first it was similar to the Sierra Nevada Pale... which was my start to the IPA world and hops in general.
Now there are so many IPA's that blow this one away that I have to call it average.

To sum it up--- I now consider this a lawnmowing IPA and not a porch sipping beauty...

Poured from a bottle into a tumbler pint, the beer is a pale, clear, goldenrod coloring with only a hint of sparse film on top. Aromas of cut grass, a subtle bitterness, and a light citrus blend. The nose is mild, overall. Flavors are a bit on the roasted side initially, but then the cedar themed hops come through, with some pepper and oregano spicing on the lateral tongue. Resiny and bitter, there is a hint of citrus blending that highlights throughout. The aftertaste is more of the bitter, resiny, oily hops, with a very green feel overall. Surprisingly quick finish, with a sharp charring and slightly drying feel. Bitter linger in the back of the throat. Decent brew, and light on the ABV compared to most IPAs, so this one won't get you in trouble as fast.

Pours a hazy, very pale orange, nearly yellow. White head retains well at a little under a half-finger.

Scent is very mineral-y, some sweet and bready malts, a tiny bit of lemony hops. Nothing too enticing but not quite off-putting.

Taste opens thing up more. Hops are big on the herbal+grassiness, with maybe a light grapefruit quality to it. A decent amount of bitterness for an English IPA. Malts still have a big mineral+grainy quality, a light sweetness, and big bready notes coming out in the finish. Doesn't seem to mesh, feels a little off.

Mouthfeel is fine, good body, well carbonated.

Not bad, but really nothing to write home about.
