Notes/Commercial Description:
This malty, full-bodied double alt is also known as “Stickebier” – German slang for “secret brew”. Long Trail Double Bag was originally offered only in our brewery taproom as a special treat to our visitors. With an alcohol content of 7.2%, please indulge in moderation. The Long Trail Brewing Company is proud to have Double Bag named Malt Advocate’s “Beer of the Year” in 2001. Malt Advocate is a national magazine devoted to “expanding the boundaries of fine drinks”. Their panel of judges likes to keep things simple, and therefore of thousands of eligible competitors they award only two categories: “Imported” and “Domestic”. It is a great honor to receive this recognition.

Packaging: 12 oz. bottle, pry-cap
Glassware: Stange
Purchased: Single from Let's Pour mailorder

Clear, amber beer with a head of offwhite head. Not a lot of lacing or retention but still a nice looking pour.

Aromas are pleasant with primarily malty, caramel sweetness coming through.

The taste is initially sweet and malty, but also has an earthy hop presence for some teeth. Mouthfeel is somewhat prickly. Finishes fairly dry for starting out on the sweet end, with aftertastes of toasted grain.

Overall a good ale with balance.

12/12/13. Seven months old.

Poured from the 22 oz. bomber into an Innis & Gunn tulip.

a: Amber with an inch and a half thick white head which receded to thick surface foam and dense lacing.

s: Fruit cup with a leaning to pear.

t: Pear up front over a moderate caramel malt base. Slightly sweet and sour finish. Later the fruit gives way to more maltiness, but still remains a significant element of the taste.

m: Medium with good body. Moderate carbonation tingle.

o: An easy drinking summer beer, tasty and satisfying.

Serving type: growler

Bottle from Harvest Market
Pours a fairly clear medium amber color with a smallish off white head that dissipates fairly quickly. Aromas of caramel toffee and brown sugar with just a hint of butterscotch. Earthy bitterness in the aroma keeps this in check. The flavor is sweet rich sugars with some melanoids and a bit of burnt sneaking in there. Earthy bitterness with a touch of burnt butter round us out. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation. There is a bit of diacetyl here and that usually turns me off to a beer, but this is one of the rare instances where I think it works within the frame of the rest of the brew.
